Yes, some Pixel 6a units have been reported to run at 90Hz with a community-made kernel and vendor configuration—but Google’s supported configuration is 60Hz, and the modification is not a guaranteed feature or a risk-free upgrade. It requires bootloader unlocking and flashing modified software, and reported display artifacts and device instability make it an experiment for people comfortable recovering a phone if something goes wrong.
What refresh rate does Google support on the Pixel 6a?
The Pixel 6a is a 60Hz phone in Google’s supported configuration; it has no official 90Hz setting. In a 2023 Google Pixel Community response, product expert Yasin wrote: “According to the hardware spec sheet pixel 6a works on 60 hz only.” That community response reflects the supported specification, not a promise that enthusiasts cannot experiment with other modes.
How does the community 90Hz modification work?
Technical reporting from 2022 described developers using a custom kernel and vendor configuration to enable 90Hz output on some Pixel 6a units. The reporting associated the experiment with display hardware identified as s6e3fc3 and similarities to display components used in the Pixel 6 family. This is a software-level mode modification—not a Google feature that can be switched on in Settings.
Those reports establish that the experiment worked on some devices, not that every Pixel 6a contains an identical panel or can run 90Hz with correct color, brightness, and stability. The evidence does not provide a verified success rate across panels or software builds.

What does installing the modification involve?
This is not an app installation or a display setting. The reported route involves unlocking the bootloader and flashing modified boot or kernel components. AOSP’s Pixel kernel documentation identifies the Pixel 6a by its device codename, bluejay, and describes the relevant partition and flashing workflow. A compatible kernel and instructions for the exact software build matter; a package intended for another device or build should not be assumed to work.

- Decide whether you can accept a failed flash or unstable device. AOSP cautions: “These development kernels may be unstable and cause your device to malfunction.”
The available evidence does not establish one universally compatible package or a tested, current command sequence for every Pixel 6a software release. Do not treat generic Pixel flashing instructions as a substitute for device- and build-specific guidance.

What are the risks and unknowns?
- Display artifacts: Community documentation and technical reports describe possible green tint or calibration problems. Other artifacts, such as flicker or incorrect gamma, are also plausible concerns for an unsupported display mode, but no controlled artifact rate is established.
- Stability: A modified kernel can cause malfunction, as AOSP warns. The phone may not behave as reliably as it does with Google’s supported software.
- Battery and durability: No controlled study establishes the battery-life impact, panel lifespan, or long-term reliability of this modification. A specific battery penalty or safe operating life should not be assumed.

Google’s Pixel 6a Repair Manual v3 treats display service as a repair procedure and documents display-touch and under-display-fingerprint calibration after display replacement. That calibration is relevant when servicing a screen; it does not make a replacement a guaranteed 90Hz upgrade.
