In a laboratory batch test, biochar made from used coffee grounds and activated with steam removed up to 56% of chromium(III) from an acidic water solution. That is a promising result for a specific material under specific conditions—not evidence that coffee waste can make drinking water safe or treat real wastewater.
What did the experiment test?
Kaźmierczak, Radulski, Osuch-Słomka, and Zięba describe making biochar from dried, used coffee grounds. They heated the grounds to 600 °C under a protective carbon-dioxide flow, then steam-activated selected samples. The publisher’s article page gives the study title as “Water vapor activated biochars made from used coffee grounds.” Read the article page.
For the adsorption tests, the authors selected two steam-treated materials and compared them with biochar that had not been steam-activated. They tested chromium(III), or Cr(III), at pH 4, with an initial concentration of 120 mg/L and a temperature of 20 °C. The reported sorbent doses were 0.5 g and 1.0 g; chromium removal was measured using ICP-MS.
The publisher page lists the issue date as November 2026, which is later than October 4, 2026. The findings below are therefore described as reported on that page; its listing does not establish whether the paper appeared online in advance or reflects a future issue date or metadata error.

How much chromium did the biochars remove?
Removal varied with both the material and the amount used. The percentages below are the study’s results for its specified batch conditions, not adsorption capacities in mg/g.

The strongest result in the listed tests was 56% removal by 1.0 g of BFK_600_4ml_15min. In this material’s name, “4ml” and “15min” identify the steam-activation flow rate and duration used by the researchers.

What did steam treatment change?
The authors report that steam activation increased measured surface area by as much as ninefold compared with the unactivated biochar. But surface development did not increase in a simple, consistent way with longer activation: the highest reported surface area belonged to the 30-minute sample, while the 15-minute sample achieved the highest chromium removal in the adsorption tests.
The analyses also found changes in oxygen and nitrogen content, hydroxyl and C–O/C–OH-associated infrared bands, and porous, heterogeneous structures. The authors interpret oxygen-containing surface groups as helping explain the improved adsorption. The results do not show that surface area alone—or any single measured feature—determined how much chromium was removed.

Why this is not evidence of a household water filter
The experiment tested a prepared material in a controlled batch, using acidic water with a defined Cr(III) concentration. Its removal percentages cannot be applied directly to water with a different pH, concentration, temperature, dose, contact time, or mix of dissolved substances.
- It tested Cr(III), not chromium in every chemical form. The reported results do not establish performance against chromium(VI).
- It did not establish treatment of real wastewater. The study does not demonstrate continuous-flow performance or operation at treatment-plant scale.
- It did not test drinking-water safety. A percentage removed is not a measurement showing that the remaining water meets a health or regulatory limit.
- The named materials are laboratory-prepared. The article does not identify them as retail filter media or validate consumer use.
A separate 2025 study considered KOH-modified coffee-ground biochar and several dissolved metals, including Cr(III), under different experimental conditions. Because material preparation and test conditions differ, it is research context—not a direct performance comparison with steam-activated biochar. Read the 2025 study.

How the researchers made the material
The researchers started with 120 g portions of dried spent coffee grounds, reported as having no more than 10% moisture. The grounds were milled and sieved to 600–400 μm. Pyrolysis at 600 °C under a CO₂ protective-gas flow of 5.0 L/min produced biochar; steam activation followed for selected samples, using activator flow rates of 2 or 4 ml/min and durations of 15, 30, or 45 minutes. The resulting biochar was crushed and sieved to a 200 μm fraction.
The reported yield was approximately 20% of starting mass for pyrolysis alone and about 21–23% for the combined pyrolysis-and-steam-activation route. The authors describe steam treatment as physical activation, which avoids the chemical reagents and wash waste associated with chemical activation. That process distinction by itself does not establish a complete lifecycle or environmental advantage.
