Yes—several automotive LiDAR announcements have put a solid-state sensor near or below $500, but that figure is a target for high-volume vehicle production, not a verified retail price. Velodyne and Cepton announced below-$500 targets; Ouster announced an expected $600 program price for its ES2. The announcements describe OEM-oriented components and production plans, not sensors confirmed as consumer-ready products available at those prices.

What a $500 target does—and does not—mean

A production-cost target is a supplier’s stated goal or expectation for a sensor made in automotive volumes. It is not evidence that a buyer can order one sensor today for that amount. The announcements also do not establish a current transaction price, consumer listing, or replacement-part price for any of the products below.

That distinction matters because the figures are attached to different time frames and terms: Velodyne used “target price” for automotive mass-production quantities in 2016 and “target price” for high-volume production in 2020; Cepton described a target below $500 in automotive volumes in 2023; Ouster described $600 as an expected price for automotive production programs in 2020. These are not equivalent to published retail prices or confirmed quotes.

How the announced sensors compare

The figures below are the suppliers’ announcement-era specifications and plans. They should not be read as evidence of present-day production status or current pricing.

Which sensors were actually announced near $500?

Velodyne: two sub-$500 production targets

The Solid-State Hybrid Ultra Puck Auto announcement in 2016 paired a 200 m range claim with a target below $500 per sensor in automotive mass-production quantities. In 2020, Velodyne gave the Velarray H800 a separate below-$500 target for high-volume production and said it was designed for automotive applications. Neither statement gives a verified price for an individual retail purchase.

Cepton: the clearest accompanying performance details

Cepton’s 2023 Vista-X90 Plus announcement is the most specific of the sub-$500 claims in this comparison: it gives a below-$500 target for automotive volumes alongside a 200 m maximum range at 10% reflectivity, 90° horizontal field of view, and power consumption below 13 W. Those details help describe the sensor, but do not turn the target into an orderable price.

Ouster: a nearby, but higher, expected program price

Ouster’s ES2 announcement set an expected $600 price for automotive production programs, rather than a below-$500 target. Ouster also described a roadmap toward lower costs and said the ES2 used a digital solid-state architecture with no moving parts. Its announcement-era plan for volume production in 2023 should not be treated as confirmation of current production or availability.

Why range alone cannot identify the best value

Maximum-range figures are not directly comparable when the measurement conditions differ or are missing. Cepton states 10% reflectivity for both the Vista-X90 Plus and Cepton Ultra; several other range claims do not state a reflectivity condition in the announcement summaries. A longer headline range therefore does not, by itself, show that one sensor detects objects more reliably in the same conditions.

For an automotive design decision, compare more than range and price:

  • Detection conditions: Check reflectivity, operating conditions, and how “maximum range” is defined. A range number without comparable test conditions cannot settle a head-to-head comparison.
  • Coverage and detail: Field of view and angular resolution affect what portion of the scene the sensor covers and how finely it represents that scene. The published summaries do not provide these values for every product.
  • Power and vehicle integration: Power draw, physical packaging, and integration requirements can affect whether a sensor suits a particular vehicle. Only some of the announcements give power figures; dimensions and integration details are not consistently stated here.
  • Architecture: “Solid-state” does not mean every sensor uses the same design. The announcements describe a hybrid sensor, a digital architecture with no moving parts, and an FMCW design using silicon photonics and a system-on-chip architecture. The label alone does not establish equivalent performance.
  • Automotive qualification: Ask suppliers for the relevant functional-safety and cybersecurity evidence, as well as qualification and validation status for the intended vehicle program. Those qualification details are not established by the price and range claims above.
  • Program maturity: Separate a product announcement, a planned production date, sampling, and confirmed volume supply. A date stated as an expectation or plan is not proof that production started or that a sensor is available for a new program.

Can a consumer buy one for $500?

The cited announcements do not establish a current $500 retail transaction price, a verified Amazon listing, or a consumer-ready replacement part for these automotive sensors. Their price language is tied to automotive-volume manufacturing or vehicle production programs. Treat them as OEM components unless a supplier or authorized channel confirms the specific product, purchasing terms, and price for your use case.
