Smart glasses can use camera-based object recognition and directional sound cues to help a wearer find selected objects. A 2023 study tested this approach, called acoustic touch, in controlled indoor tasks with 14 participants. It was inspired by human echolocation training, but it is not echolocation: the prototype recognized objects with cameras and played associated sounds rather than relying on a person listening to echoes.

What acoustic touch does

The prototype combines a camera-equipped wearable, computer vision and auditory icons—short sounds associated with recognized objects. When an object enters a defined audio field of view, the system plays its sound. Turning or moving the head changes which objects are selected, so the wearer can scan the surroundings by directing their gaze and listening for cues.

The approach is intended to let users explore object locations without having to listen to spoken descriptions for every item. It is a cueing interface, not a substitute for all the information speech might provide: an auditory icon signals an object’s presence or identity, while a spoken description can convey more detail. The 2023 experiment compared selected presentation conditions; it did not establish a general ranking of speech-based and sound-icon smart-glasses systems.

Is this human echolocation?

No. Human echolocation involves interpreting echoes from sounds, often sounds the person makes. Acoustic touch uses cameras to detect objects, computer vision to recognize them, and software to trigger sounds associated with those objects. The study drew inspiration from echolocation training, but it tested a camera-and-audio interface—not a way for glasses to make unaided echolocation possible.

What the study tested

Zhu and colleagues’ PLOS ONE study, published 25 October 2023, investigated a prototype called the Foveated Audio Device. It used NReal Light AR glasses, an OPPO Find X3 Pro Android phone, a YOLOv5 object-recognition model and stereo-camera depth estimation. Participants searched for, identified and reached household items in a controlled indoor setting, in seated and standing tasks.

The 14 participants comprised seven blind or low-vision people and seven sighted people who were blindfolded. The test objects were four household categories: a book, bottle, bowl and cup. Comparison conditions included clock-face descriptions and speakers positioned by the items. Although the benchmark platform could recognize roughly 120 object classes, IEEE Spectrum reports that the experiment itself used only those four categories; the broader benchmark should not be mistaken for the range demonstrated in the user tasks.

What the results show—and what they do not

The authors report that acoustic touch could aid object recognition and reaching in the tested tasks, without significantly increasing measured cognitive workload. They describe the results as promising for wearable sensory augmentation. Those findings apply to a small study in a controlled room; they do not establish long-term benefit, reliable performance in everyday environments, or the ability to navigate safely outdoors.

Object-recognition performance and timing are important constraints. IEEE Spectrum reports that quick head sweeps could cause objects to be missed because the computer vision system could not keep up. As study author Howe Yuan Zhu put it, “If [the user] sweeps too fast, they’re more likely to miss objects.” The researchers were investigating whether the interface was learnable, not demonstrating a finished mobility product.

What to take away if you are considering this technology

  • For finding nearby items: the study offers early evidence that camera-triggered sounds may help people locate and reach selected household objects.
  • For navigation: the reported experiment does not show that the prototype supports dependable travel through homes, streets or other changing environments.
  • For current products: the study’s hardware describes the research setup, not a verified consumer product that implements acoustic touch. The evidence here does not establish current availability or a way to reproduce the prototype.

The primary study is Zhu et al., “An investigation into the effectiveness of using acoustic touch to assist people who are blind,” PLOS ONE (2023). IEEE Spectrum’s report, “Smart Glasses Make Human Echolocation Possible”, provides additional context on the prototype and its technical limits.
