It describes API keys and screenshot settings, but not how to provide credentials or session state for the page being captured. That is a documentation gap—not proof the service cannot do it—so confirm the current method with ShrinkTheWeb before sending it credentials.
What ShrinkTheWeb’s documentation establishes
ShrinkTheWeb is described as a service for caching and displaying website screenshots or thumbnails through its API. Its Drupal setup guide, last updated March 4, 2019, covers registering for the service, obtaining an access key and secret key, and configuring a local thumbnail cache. A related guide lists screenshot settings such as specific-page capture, custom size, full-length screenshots, viewport dimensions, delay, and image quality. Neither guide documents authentication to the destination website. The Drupal project page also says the integration appeared unsupported as of January 31, 2022; that status concerns the Drupal module and does not establish whether ShrinkTheWeb’s underlying service is operating today.
Because these materials are historical and do not describe protected-page access, they are not enough to provide a verified ShrinkTheWeb procedure or parameter for authenticated capture. Ask the vendor whether its current service supports your authentication method and follow its current instructions.
First identify what “password-protected” means
The required method depends on how the target site authenticates you. A screenshot service must be able to supply the right kind of authentication state; support for one mechanism does not imply support for the others.

#1 Best Overall
| Protection type | What it means | What to confirm with ShrinkTheWeb |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP Basic Authentication | The server issues an authentication challenge, commonly before the page loads. | Whether the current API accepts Basic Auth credentials, and the exact supported parameter format. |
| Normal account login | A login form establishes a session, often represented by cookies after login. | Whether the service supports session cookies or an authorized browser login flow. |
| Token or custom-header access | The site requires an authorization token or another header on requests. | Whether custom headers are supported, how they are scoped, and whether they are retained across redirects. |
These are general authentication distinctions, not documented ShrinkTheWeb features. For comparison only, Capture’s documentation describes HTTP Basic Authentication and custom headers, while Urlbox’s documentation describes cookie-based approaches. Those examples do not establish that ShrinkTheWeb supports the same options.
How to proceed safely
- Confirm authorization. Capture only pages and accounts you are permitted to access.
- Identify the mechanism. Determine whether the page uses Basic Auth, a login-created session, or a token/header. If uncertain, ask the site administrator.
- Ask ShrinkTheWeb for current instructions. Request the exact supported authentication mechanism, parameter format, credential scope, and handling of redirects and JavaScript-rendered pages. The located ShrinkTheWeb guides do not specify these details.
- Use the least access necessary. If the vendor confirms a supported method, use credentials or a session with only the permissions needed for the capture. Keep the Screenshot API key separate from the target site’s credentials or session cookie; do not place secrets in public examples, web pages, or logs.
- Check the result. Confirm the returned image shows the intended authorized page, not a login screen, access-denied page, or error. Do not assume a successful API response means the site authentication succeeded.
If ShrinkTheWeb cannot handle your login flow
For a page you are authorized to access, one option is to use a local browser-automation workflow that logs in through the site’s normal process and captures the page in that browser session. Another is to select a screenshot service whose current documentation explicitly supports the authentication method you need. Neither option is guaranteed to work on every site: multifactor authentication, bot controls, IP restrictions, and multi-step login flows can affect capture.
ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first when you need documented screenshot API options: it supports custom headers, cookies, and Authorization, and only clean screenshots are billed. Its API also has parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This example requests a WebP capture of a public page; adapt the target URL and use your own API key. It is not a ShrinkTheWeb instruction, and you should confirm ScreenshotNeo’s current documentation for the precise options needed for a protected destination.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and parameters. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does an API access key log ShrinkTheWeb into the target site?
No such behavior is documented in the ShrinkTheWeb setup material described above. Its service access key and the destination site’s authentication are separate credentials.

Does an unsupported Drupal module mean ShrinkTheWeb itself is shut down?
No. The unsupported/obsolete status cited is for the Drupal integration; it does not by itself establish the operating status of ShrinkTheWeb’s underlying service.
