Yes—but renewable energy is only part of the answer. It can lower the emissions associated with the electricity AI data centres use, especially when procurement helps bring additional clean generation online. The benefit depends on whether that electricity is available where and when the data centre needs it, and on the grid, storage and demand-management measures that keep the facility running reliably. Buying renewable electricity on an annual basis is not, by itself, proof that a data centre used renewable power in every hour.
Why the question is becoming more urgent
Data-centre electricity demand is rising quickly, with AI-focused facilities growing especially fast. The International Energy Agency’s 2026 update reports that global data-centre electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, while electricity consumption from AI-focused data centres grew 50% that year. Its central projection puts total data-centre demand at about 485 TWh in 2025 and 950 TWh in 2030; it expects AI-focused demand to triple over the same period.
These are global demand figures and projections, not estimates of the electricity used by a particular AI query, model or facility. They show why the source and timing of electricity matter: adding large, concentrated loads can increase emissions and strain local power systems if clean generation and grid capacity do not keep pace.
Renewable electricity helps, but there are two different measures
A data centre normally takes electricity from the local grid. The physical mix feeding that grid changes by location and hour, while a company can separately sign contracts for renewable electricity produced elsewhere or at other times. Both measures matter, but they answer different questions.

Physical electricity at the grid
The IEA estimated that renewables supplied about 27% of the electricity physically consumed by data centres worldwide in 2024. That global figure does not describe the electricity mix at any individual facility: a site’s physical supply depends on its local grid and the generation available when it is operating.
Contracts and renewable procurement
Power purchase agreements (PPAs) let companies contract for electricity from generators, and can help support the development of wind, solar or other low-emissions generation. The IEA reports that data centres signed more than 40 TWh of renewable PPAs in 2025. That is a volume of contracted electricity, not evidence that the same volume was physically delivered to data centres at the times they consumed power.

An annual contract can cover a facility’s yearly consumption on paper even if the contracted generator is in another region or produces power at different hours. For a claim such as “100% renewable,” readers need to know the geographic boundary, time-matching period and accounting method—not just the annual contract total. Nuclear power is also low-emissions, but it is not renewable and should be counted separately.
What makes renewable power useful for a data centre
Renewable generation reduces emissions most convincingly when it can serve the data centre’s load in practice or when procurement demonstrably helps add clean supply to the electricity system. The IEA’s 2025 outlook illustrates the scale of the transition, but it is a forecast rather than a description of every operator or grid.

- Slotted Venting to Improve Air flow and Help Prevent Overheating of Your Equipment
- Additional clean generation: Procurement that supports new generation can contribute more than simply reallocating the credit for existing renewable output.
- Good time and place matching: Generation close to the facility and available during its demand hours has a clearer relationship to the site’s electricity use than a distant annual match.
- Reliable delivery: Storage, dispatchable supply and grid services can help balance variable wind and solar output and the data centre’s continuous demand.
- Transparent accounting: Operators should explain whether a claim is based on physical supply, contracts, certificates or a combination, and define the hours and regions covered.
In its 2025 scenario, the IEA said, “Half of the global growth in data centre demand is met by renewables, supported by storage and the broader electricity grid.” This is a forward-looking scenario statement, not a guarantee about the supply mix at a particular data centre.
Why the grid, storage and siting still matter
Clean generation cannot power a new facility if the facility cannot connect to the grid or the electricity cannot be moved to it. Transmission upgrades and new grid connections can take years. In its 2025 report, the IEA estimated that around 20% of planned data-centre projects could face delays unless grid risks are addressed.

Choose locations with power capacity
Siting a facility where generation, transmission and grid capacity are available can reduce connection bottlenecks and make it easier for new clean power to serve the load. A site’s local electricity mix and grid constraints therefore matter alongside an operator’s company-wide renewable contracts.
Use storage and flexibility where they work
Storage can shift electricity across hours and help manage changes in renewable output or rapid changes in AI demand. Flexible computing loads or onsite assets may also support the grid where the engineering and incentives make them practical. These are integration options, not evidence that every data centre already uses them. The IEA notes that curtailing AI operations can be costly, so flexibility has to be designed around service requirements rather than assumed to be freely available.

Renewable supply does not replace efficiency
Reducing the electricity needed for a given computing service lowers pressure on both the grid and the supply of clean power. The IEA’s 2025 analysis models materially lower data-centre demand in its high-efficiency case. Efficiency measures can include more efficient computing hardware, cooling and facility operations, as well as software and workload choices that avoid unnecessary computation.
Clean electricity and efficiency address different parts of the problem: renewable supply reduces the emissions intensity of electricity, while efficiency limits how much electricity is required. Pursuing both is more robust than assuming new generation alone will keep pace with every increase in demand.
How to judge a data centre’s renewable-energy claim
When an operator says a facility runs on renewable energy, check what the claim covers. A useful disclosure identifies the facility or portfolio, the electricity accounting boundary, and whether matching is annual or hourly. It also distinguishes contracted renewable electricity from the physical grid supply and explains whether procurement supports new generation.
- Location: Does the claim refer to the specific facility, a region or the company’s global operations?
- Timing: Is renewable generation matched to consumption by year, month or hour?
- Delivery: Is the electricity physically available to the facility, or is the claim based on a contract or certificate?
- Additionality: Does the procurement help bring new clean generation online, and is that basis explained?
- Reliability: Are grid capacity, storage or other balancing arrangements described?
- Demand: Does the operator report steps to improve hardware, cooling, software or workload efficiency?
What the emissions projections do—and do not—say
IEA emissions estimates are projections tied to the assumptions and report vintage behind each scenario. They should not be read as measured future outcomes or combined as if they were a single, settled forecast.
| IEA report | Data-centre emissions estimate for 2035 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Energy and AI (2025), base case | Around 300 Mt | A scenario estimate from the 2025 report. |
| Key Questions on Energy and AI (2026) | Around 350 Mt | A projection from the 2026 update; it is not directly comparable with the 2025 estimate without checking scenario assumptions and methodology. |
The figures refer to data-centre emissions, not emissions from every part of the AI lifecycle. They underline that clean electricity procurement needs to be evaluated alongside demand growth, grid supply and efficiency rather than treated as a complete sustainability measure on its own.
