Short answer: A PS5 with a disc drive plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 game discs. No PS5 model plays PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs directly. The original PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any disc, while certain newer Digital Edition model groups can accept Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive.
That distinction matters when you are buying used games, moving from a PS4, or deciding whether a Digital Edition is suitable for your library. Compatibility also has exceptions, installation requirements, and title-specific upgrade rules.

PS5 disc compatibility at a glance
| Disc generation | Works directly on PS5? | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 | No | PS5 does not run PlayStation-format software from a disc. |
| PS2 | No | PS2-format software is excluded from disc playback. |
| PS3 | No | Sony explicitly says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. |
| PS4 | Yes, for the overwhelming majority | A PS5 with a functioning disc drive installs the game and requires the disc whenever you play. |
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states that PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc. Separately, PlayStation Support says the PS5 is backward compatible with the majority of PS4 games and that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. These statements apply to physical discs; they do not describe every way older games may be available digitally through a current store, subscription, remake, or streaming service.
Can PS5 play PS1 discs?
No. Inserting an original PS1 disc into a PS5 will not make the game install or run. The PS5’s backward-compatibility system was designed around PS4 software, not the original PlayStation’s disc format.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold separately
The limitation is the same for standard PS1 releases and re-releases supplied on an original PS1 disc. A PS5 disc drive can read the physical medium, but the console does not provide the software compatibility layer required to launch PlayStation-format games.
Can PS5 play PS2 discs?
No. PS2 discs are also excluded from direct playback. The PS5 Safety Guide specifically lists PlayStation 2 format software among the disc formats that cannot be played.
Do not assume that a PS2 game will work because a particular title has later appeared as a remake, remaster, or downloadable classic. Those are separate releases with their own licensing and technical requirements. Owning the original PS2 disc does not by itself grant a PS5 digital entitlement.
Does PS5 read PS3 discs?
No. Sony’s PlayStation Support guidance is explicit: “PS5 consoles don’t support PlayStation®3 discs.” A PS3 Blu-ray game disc therefore cannot be installed or launched as a native PS5 game.
This is a disc-compatibility restriction, not a statement that no PS3-era game can ever be played on a PS5. A publisher may release a PS3 game again as a PS5 version, a remaster, or another digital offering, but that newer edition is not unlocked by inserting the old PS3 disc unless the publisher specifically creates such an entitlement.
Can you use PS4 discs on a PS5?
Yes, provided the console has a disc drive. Sony describes the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5. A PS4 disc is treated as the ownership license while the PS5 installs compatible game data to its internal storage or an approved expansion location.
How to install and play a PS4 disc
- Turn on a PS5 model with a disc drive and sign in to the account you use for the console.
- Insert the PS4 game disc with the label facing the correct direction for your console’s horizontal or vertical position.
- Wait for the game to appear on the Home screen. The PS5 installs the game the first time you insert it.
- Allow any required game update to download. The installed version may be newer than the data on the disc.
- Start the game after installation and updates finish.
- Leave the same PS4 disc inserted whenever you play. Removing it removes the physical license, even though the installed files remain on the storage.
Installation does not convert a disc purchase into a disc-free license. If you uninstall the game and reinstall it later, you will still need the disc to authorize the launch.

Some PS4 releases offer a title-specific upgrade to a PS5 digital version. The offer may be free, paid, limited by region, or unavailable, depending on the publisher and edition. Open the game hub on your PS5 and check the upgrade option rather than assuming that every PS4 disc qualifies.
When a disc-based upgrade is available, the original PS4 disc normally remains the license check. You must keep it inserted to start the downloaded PS5 version. Downloading the upgraded files does not make the physical disc unnecessary.
What the PS4 compatibility percentage really means
In a 2020 Ultimate FAQ, Sony Interactive Entertainment said that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible with PS5. Current PlayStation support wording is broader, describing the “overwhelming majority” and warning that some games can show errors or unexpected behavior.
The percentage should be read as a broad platform statistic, not a guarantee for an individual disc. It does not promise that every mode, peripheral, online service, visual feature, or add-on will behave exactly as it did on a PS4.

Known categories of limitation
- Unsupported titles: A small number of PS4 games are not playable on PS5.
- Errors or unexpected behavior: A compatible game can still display glitches or other differences.
- Missing PS4 functions: Certain features that depended on PS4 hardware or accessories may not be available.
- Peripheral differences: A controller, camera, headset, or other accessory may need a PS5-compatible version or may work only in the PS4 version of the game.
- Performance changes: Selected games receive Game Boost, which can improve or smooth frame rates, but the benefit is title-specific rather than universal.
Because the compatibility list can change, check the current official listing for the exact game before buying a used disc, an add-on, or a specialized accessory.
PS5 Digital Edition: why your disc may not work
The original PS5 Digital Edition has no optical disc drive. It cannot read PS4 discs, PS1 discs, PS2 discs, PS3 discs, movie Blu-rays, or other physical media. A digital PS4 purchase can run on that console only when the game is attached to your account as a digital license.
This is different from a PS5 sold with a drive. The operating system and storage capacity do not change the physical-disc requirement: no drive means no way to validate a disc-based license.
Can a newer Digital Edition accept a detachable drive?
Some newer hardware can. Sony says a CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive can be added to CFI-2000 model-group Digital Edition consoles and consoles from the CFI-7000 model group. This accessory is separately sold, and compatibility is model-specific.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before purchasing a drive, read the model number printed on the console or its packaging and match it to Sony’s supported model groups. Do not rely only on the words “Digital Edition” in a retailer listing: the original Digital Edition and newer groups do not share the same accessory options.
What adding the drive changes
- You can insert compatible PS4 discs and use them as physical licenses.
- You can use the drive for supported physical PS5 game releases and compatible movie media.
- You still cannot play PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs directly; adding a drive changes access to physical media, not the console’s generation compatibility.
- You must install and configure the accessory according to Sony’s hardware instructions, and the console may require a system update during setup.
Disc PS5 versus Digital Edition: a practical decision
| Consideration | PS5 with disc drive | Digital Edition without a drive | Newer Digital Edition with compatible CFI-ZDD1 drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use physical PS4 discs | Yes, for the overwhelming majority of titles | No | Yes, after installing the supported accessory |
| Use second-hand discs | Yes, subject to title compatibility and disc condition | No | Yes, subject to title compatibility and disc condition |
| Need a separately sold drive | No | Not applicable to the original model | Yes |
| PS1, PS2, PS3 disc playback | No | No | No |
| PS4-to-PS5 upgrade eligibility | Depends on the individual title and offer | Digital purchases only, unless a compatible drive is installed | Depends on the individual title and offer |
| Storage and downloads | Game installation and updates still use storage; internet access may be required | Digital downloads use storage and require downloading the game | Disc games still install updates and game data to storage |
Choose a disc-equipped console if you already own PS4 discs, regularly buy used games, lend or borrow physical copies, or want the option to resell them. A Digital Edition can make sense when your library is entirely digital and you accept that physical discs cannot be used without a compatible add-on drive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you need for a PS4 disc to work
- A compatible console: It must be a PS5 with an active disc drive, either built in or an approved detachable drive on supported model groups.
- A readable disc: Heavy scratches, cracks, dirt, or an incorrectly inserted disc can prevent installation.
- Free storage: The PS5 installs game data rather than running the entire game directly from the disc.
- System and game updates: Some titles require a PS5 system update or a downloadable patch before they run correctly.
- The original disc at play time: Installation and an upgrade do not remove the need for the physical license.
- Title-specific compatibility: Verify the game in Sony’s current compatibility information when the purchase is important or expensive.
Troubleshooting a PS4 disc that will not play
The PS5 does not detect the disc
- Eject the disc and inspect it for cracks, deep scratches, fingerprints, or dirt.
- Clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center outward rather than in circles.
- Reinsert it in the correct orientation for the console’s position.
- Restart the PS5 completely, then test the disc again.
- Try another known-good disc. If several discs fail, the drive or the disc-reading mechanism may need service.
The game installs but will not start
- Confirm that the disc is still inserted; the installed files alone are not a license.
- Install the latest PS5 system software and the game’s available update.
- Check the title in Sony’s compatibility list for a known exception or warning.
- Delete and reinstall the game only after confirming that saved data is synchronized or backed up. Reinstallation cannot fix an unsupported title, but it can correct corrupted installed data.
The upgrade option is missing
Open the game hub while the disc is inserted and check the edition and region of the release. Upgrades are not universal and can differ between standard, special, bundled, and region-specific editions. If no offer appears, the publisher may not provide an upgrade for that disc.
Important licensing and ownership details
A physical PS4 disc supplies a license check; it is not simply an installation key that can be discarded. The PS5 may copy most or all playable data to storage, but it checks for the disc when launching the game. This is why lending or selling the disc also removes your ability to start the disc-based installation.

A game purchased through your account can be downloaded on a Digital Edition, but access depends on the account license, console-sharing settings, and the game’s continued availability. A PS4 disc and a digital purchase of the same title are separate license paths unless the publisher explicitly links them through an upgrade offer.
Official statements and how to verify a specific game
Sony’s published wording provides three useful rules:
- “The PS5 console is backward compatible with the majority of PS4 games.”
- “PS5 consoles don’t support PlayStation®3 discs.”
- “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.”
These statements come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Support material and PS5 Safety Guide. The support and manual pages were checked on October 19, 2026; the “more than 99%” figure comes from Sony’s 2020 Ultimate FAQ, while current pages use “overwhelming majority.” For a purchase decision, search Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility list for the exact title and check any notes about errors, missing functions, or required accessories.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each generation
- PS1: Original discs do not run directly on PS5.
- PS2: Original discs do not run directly on PS5.
- PS3: Original discs do not run directly on PS5.
- PS4: The overwhelming majority of discs work on a PS5 with a disc drive, after installation and any required updates.
- Digital Edition: The original model cannot read discs. CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups may use Sony’s CFI-ZDD1-series detachable drive, but the accessory still does not add PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc compatibility.
