Sometimes—but Plex Media Optimizer does not automatically replace your original files. It creates a separate, pre-transcoded version that may be smaller and easier for a server or remote viewer to play. Whether it saves library storage depends on the resulting file size and what you do with the original. Plex’s documentation does not establish a typical or terabyte-scale storage reduction.
Can Plex transcoding reduce storage?
It can create a lower-bitrate copy of a video, which may take less space than the source. But Plex Media Optimizer is a version-creation feature, not a documented automatic source-replacement or deletion workflow. If you keep both files, the optimized copy adds storage rather than reducing the library’s total footprint.
To determine the actual effect, compare the source and optimized file sizes, then account for both files if the original remains. Do not infer a storage saving from a preset’s bitrate alone: the result varies with the source media and selected settings. Plex’s Media Optimizer documentation does not report a representative file-size reduction or a measured terabyte saving: Media Optimizer Overview.
What Plex Media Optimizer does—and why use it?
Plex describes the feature as pre-transcoding selected media using chosen settings and saving the result as a different version. You can optimize an item, a season or show, or a filtered set. The prepared copy may help when a server struggles to transcode during playback or when a remote viewer has limited bandwidth. Plex also describes keeping optimized versions for recent or On Deck items as a use case.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Optimization shifts some work earlier: the server processes media in advance, rather than relying only on live conversion during playback. It does not remove the general trade-offs Plex identifies—server CPU, network capacity, and storage—and the conversion can still take time and use server resources.
Which optimization quality should you choose?
Plex’s support page lists these documented choices. They are configuration limits, not promises about the output file’s size or quality for every source:

| Setting | Plex-documented video limit | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Optimized for Mobile | 4 Mbps, 720p | A lower-resolution, bitrate-limited version suited to the preset’s intended use. |
| Optimized for TV | 8 Mbps, 1080p | A higher-resolution, bitrate-limited version than the Mobile preset. |
| Original Quality | No bitrate limit | Does not impose a bitrate cap; it is not a stated file-size reduction target. |
| Custom | Selectable profile and bitrate, up to 20 Mbps | Lets you choose a profile and bitrate within the range stated by Plex. |
The presets do not by themselves establish how audio or subtitles will be handled, how long conversion will take, or how much smaller the result will be. Check the output and its playback on the Plex clients you intend to use. For why playback compatibility can require Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding, see Plex’s media-format support guide.
How to create an optimized version
Plex’s creation guide explains how to start an optimization for selected media and choose its settings. The exact controls may vary by Plex app and version; consult Plex’s Creating Optimized Versions instructions for the applicable interface.

- Select the media: choose an individual library item, a show or season, or a filtered selection supported by the interface.
- Choose the optimization settings: select a documented preset or configure a custom profile and bitrate. Pick for the playback device and network conditions you need to support, not on the assumption that a particular setting will save a fixed amount.
- Choose where the version is stored: Plex documents storing optimized versions in a
Plex Versionsfolder alongside originals or in a selected library folder path. - Let the server create the version, then check it: compare the optimized file’s size with the source and test playback on the intended client before deciding whether the extra version serves your needs.
Does Plex keep the original file?
Plex documents the optimized result as a different version and describes storage locations for that version; it does not describe optimization as automatically replacing or deleting the source. Treat the original as retained unless you separately manage it. If you choose to remove a source, first confirm that the optimized copy is complete, plays correctly where needed, and is the version you intend to keep.
Why Plex may transcode during playback
Optimization is useful only when it addresses a real playback constraint. Whether Plex can Direct Play a file depends on the client’s support for its container, video and audio formats, resolution, bitrate, and subtitle handling. If the client cannot accept the media as-is, Plex may need to Direct Stream or transcode it. An optimized copy can be prepared for a particular class of playback needs, but no one preset guarantees compatibility with every client or file.

Storage and server trade-offs to keep separate
- Completed optimized files: these are separate media versions whose size should be checked against the source.
- Retained source library: keeping the original alongside the optimized copy means both occupy space; an optimized version is not itself evidence of net storage savings.
- Temporary transcoding space: Plex warns that transcoding uses temporary disk storage and that concurrent transcodes can consume gigabytes. This working space is distinct from the completed optimized file and the retained library. See Plex’s transcoding guide.
- Processing and bandwidth: Plex identifies CPU, network, and storage as constraints. Its server guidance notes that transcoding can be CPU-intensive and generally recommends leaving transcoder quality and background preset settings at their defaults unless there is a specific reason to change them: Server Settings – Bandwidth and Transcoding Limits.
When optimization makes sense
- Use it when a server has difficulty converting media on the fly and you can prepare a version in advance.
- Consider it when remote playback is constrained by upstream bandwidth and a lower-bitrate version suits the viewer’s connection.
- Use it selectively for content you expect to watch on a particular type of device, rather than making every file a second version without checking the storage impact.
- Skip it as a storage-saving strategy if you intend to keep every source and have no playback problem to solve; creating extra versions can increase total storage use.
Plex separately documents downloads for mobile devices, including its Downloads overview and iOS and Android mobile download instructions. Those materials describe downloads, not proof that Media Optimizer removes originals or guarantees library-wide storage savings.
