Not by itself. Owncast is a self-hosted server that receives a broadcast over RTMP and delivers it to viewers through HLS; its official documentation does not describe a built-in playlist player, loop controller, or direct relay to YouTube. To keep a playlist live on YouTube, a separate playout and encoder or relay must play the videos and send a compatible stream to YouTube. Add Owncast only if you also want an independent Owncast viewing destination.
What Owncast does—and what it does not do
Think of the workflow as separate jobs: a source plays the playlist, an encoder sends the live feed to a platform, and the platform makes it available to viewers. Owncast’s documented role is the receiving and delivery server. It accepts an incoming RTMP broadcast—TCP port 1935 by default, using a stream key on the /live/ path—and processes the source into video segments served to viewers through HLS. The specifics can depend on your configuration. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation and video documentation describe that pipeline.
Owncast’s guides for OBS and FFmpeg explain ways to send a broadcast into Owncast. They do not establish that Owncast will play a playlist or forward its incoming feed to YouTube. Likewise, Owncast’s HLS embed guidance describes an output for compatible players, not a playlist input or a validated YouTube rebroadcast route.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is separate: configure an encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Its documentation explains that destination setup, but does not identify Owncast as the encoder or relay. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and stream settings.

Choose the right architecture
If YouTube is the only destination
Use a playlist-capable playout source and an encoder or relay that sends its output directly to YouTube. Owncast may be unnecessary if you do not want it to host a separate viewing destination. You will need to select and configure a solution for the playlist format, output settings, and restart behavior; the official documentation cited here does not provide a tested end-to-end recipe for a playlist-to-YouTube setup.
If you also want an Owncast viewing site
Plan for the source and encoder or relay to deliver a compatible feed to each intended destination. Owncast’s RTMP ingest and HLS output establish how it handles its own viewers; YouTube requires its own encoder destination details. Do not assume that sending a feed into Owncast automatically republishes it to YouTube. The exact multi-destination arrangement depends on the chosen playout and relay software, and should be tested against both platforms’ current requirements.

Build and test a continuous workflow
The exact software, settings, and wiring depend on your operating system and playlist format. The following is a planning sequence, not a verified command-by-command recipe for a particular combination of tools.
- Confirm the destinations. Decide whether you need YouTube alone or both YouTube and Owncast. This determines whether Owncast belongs in the path.
- Prepare the playlist source. Choose a playout tool that can play your files in sequence, repeat them as needed, and keep producing audio and video. Confirm that the media and playlist behave correctly before connecting a live destination.
- Configure the encoder or relay. Set its output to the intended platform’s ingest endpoint and use that platform’s stream key. For YouTube, follow the current encoder instructions; for Owncast, consult its broadcasting guide. Treat these as distinct destinations, not interchangeable keys or URLs.
- Check processing and capacity. Owncast converts incoming video into segments and can generate optional quality variants. Its resource use depends on processing load and server capacity; higher demand can lead to slower delivery or buffering. Test the configuration on the available hardware and network, as Owncast’s video documentation recommends.
- Run an end-to-end test. Check that the playlist advances and repeats as intended, viewers can watch the stream at each destination, and the encoder recovers as expected after a controlled restart or interruption. Arrange monitoring and restart behavior for the source, encoder or relay, server, and network; no single component makes the full chain uninterrupted.
- Plan for the archive separately. If preserving the complete program matters, maintain a local recording or another deliberate archive plan. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. This is an archive caveat, not a claim that YouTube necessarily stops the live feed at 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rules
YouTube’s live-streaming tips say a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Eligibility and platform rules can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming tips before setup. In YouTube Studio, verify the selected stream’s privacy, stream key, and encoder settings.

Make sure you have the necessary rights to the video and audio in the playlist. A video being available online or already appearing on your channel does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your content; a continuous stream is not an exception to those rules.
What “around the clock” depends on
A 24/7 operation is a chain, not an Owncast setting: the playlist source must keep playing, the encoder or relay must keep sending, the network must remain available, and any Owncast server in the design must have adequate capacity. Owncast documents background and startup operation as part of its installation guidance, but that is operational advice rather than an uptime guarantee. Plan how you will detect failures and restore each component, and test the whole arrangement before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
