YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel, and each stream key can be used by up to three active streams. Both limits apply at the same time, so hitting either one prevents another stream from starting. For independent feeds, create separate live events and configure an encoder for each. A horizontal and vertical presentation of one stream is different: YouTube describes it as one stream with a shared URL and chat, not two separate events.
How many live streams can one YouTube channel run at once?
YouTube Help states that a channel can have up to 10 active streams, while a single stream key can have up to three active streams. These are simultaneous limits, not alternatives: a channel may be blocked from starting another feed because it has reached either cap. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
For example, if a channel has already reached 10 active streams, using a different key will not allow an eleventh. Likewise, if a particular key is already being used for three active streams, another feed using that same key will exceed the per-key limit even if the channel has fewer than 10 streams overall.
Separate feeds versus horizontal and vertical formats
Independent feeds need separate events
If you want different content live at the same time—for example, one feed for music and another for a separate program—create independent live events in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Set up the encoder for each event with that event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this event-and-encoder workflow.

Two orientations can still be one stream
YouTube also documents dual-format streaming, which presents horizontal and vertical versions with a shared stream URL and chat. This is not the same setup as creating two independently configured live events. See YouTube’s information on streaming across platforms and formats.
How to set up multiple independent livestreams
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create an event for each feed. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create each independent stream event you intend to run.
- Connect each event to an encoder. For every feed, enter the stream URL and key belonging to its event in the corresponding encoder. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a stream with an encoder.
- Track both active-stream limits. Keep the total at or below 10 active streams per channel and the usage of each key at or below three active streams.
- Choose where encoding runs. Local software or hardware encoding uses your device’s processing resources. A cloud encoder can reduce workload on your computer and may distribute a feed to multiple destinations; the specific destinations and capabilities depend on the service. YouTube’s encoder overview describes these general workflow differences.
Local encoding or cloud encoding?
With local encoding, software on your computer processes the video and sends it to YouTube. This offers direct control, but your device must handle the encoding workload and remain available while it is streaming. YouTube’s general guidance does not specify a universal processor or computer configuration for multiple feeds, so the requirements depend on the encoders, video settings, and other work running on your system.

With cloud encoding, a service processes or relays the feed away from your home computer. That can reduce local workload; available routing, controls, and costs vary by provider. Compare options by how many feeds you need, what the service does with your video, whether it can keep running without your equipment on, and the service’s price and recovery behavior.

Plan around the archive limit
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24/7 event will be preserved as one complete archive; the official guidance cited here does not establish that outcome. Continuous streaming does not establish monetization eligibility
YouTube says that members of the YouTube Partner Program can monetize live streams. This is conditional on being a YPP member; running a 24/7 feed does not by itself establish eligibility. Check YouTube’s Partner Program guidance, and only stream material you have the rights to use. Repeating a recording does not make copyrighted music or video safe to broadcast.

Troubleshooting multiple streams
- A new stream will not start: Check the channel-wide total and the number of active streams using that key. YouTube’s respective caps are 10 and three.
- The event is not receiving video: Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended event, rather than credentials from another event. Recheck the encoder setup against YouTube’s instructions.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: The automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that a 24/7 event will produce one complete archive. Use a separate recording plan if you need a dependable copy.
- A local setup struggles under load: Each local encoder uses device resources. Reduce the number of simultaneous local encoding jobs or move some processing to a cloud workflow; YouTube does not publish one hardware specification that guarantees a particular multi-feed setup.
