Not reliably with the security-key methods currently documented. PlayStation Network (PSN) supports passkeys and provides a hardware-security-key option, although Sony warns that some keys can have compatibility problems. Steam’s official account-security guidance documents Steam Guard through email codes and the Steam Mobile Authenticator, not FIDO2 hardware-key enrollment. The dependable setup today is a compatible FIDO2 security key for your PSN passkey, plus Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator or email protection for Steam.
What “one key for both accounts” would require
A physical security key is a small USB, NFC or USB-C authenticator that proves possession of a registered credential. Modern FIDO2/WebAuthn keys are designed to resist phishing because the credential is bound to the legitimate website or app during sign-in. For one key to protect two services, each service must independently support registering that key and using it during login.
Registering a key with PSN does not automatically make it a Steam authenticator. The accounts have separate identity systems, enrollment records and recovery procedures. A key can hold credentials for multiple services, but every service must support the same authentication standard and expose a registration flow.

That distinction matters when shopping for a “FIDO2 security key.” The product category is appropriate for the PSN passkey portion of this setup. It is not evidence that Steam accepts the device.

Service-by-service support
| Service | Documented sign-in protection | Hardware-key status | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Network | Passkeys, including management of additional passkeys | PlayStation Account Management provides a hardware-key path for creating a passkey | Sony says some hardware security keys may encounter issues; compatibility must be checked |
| Steam | Steam Guard email codes and Steam Mobile Authenticator codes; the mobile guide also describes QR sign-in and app approval | Valve’s published Steam Guard methods do not describe FIDO2 hardware-key enrollment | Do not assume a USB or NFC key can replace Steam Guard |
Sony Interactive Entertainment describes passkeys as “Strong and phishing-resistant, passkeys adhere to Fast Identity Online (FIDO) standards.” That description applies to the passkey method, not to every physical key on the market or to Steam’s authentication system.
How PSN passkeys and security keys work
PSN’s Account Management service lets you enable Sign in with Passkey, create a passkey and manage additional passkeys. A passkey can be stored on a phone, computer or compatible hardware key. During sign-in, the device unlocks the passkey using its local PIN, fingerprint, face recognition or other device check; the private credential is not typed into a website.
Sony’s setup guidance specifically cautions that some hardware security keys may not work as expected. A key can be technically FIDO2-capable yet fail because of connector type, NFC behavior, browser support, console interaction or the way the key handles passkey creation. Treat compatibility as a requirement, not a guarantee.

Device and browser requirements
- Passkeys are supported on most devices running iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later.
- For browser sign-in, use a current version of Safari, Chrome or Edge.
- A hardware key must be usable with the device and browser you will use for PSN Account Management and sign-in. Check the key’s connector or NFC support before buying.
- Keep another passkey or an available account-recovery route so a lost or damaged key does not lock you out.
Adding a passkey to PSN
- Open PlayStation Account Management and sign in with your existing account credentials.
- Open the account’s security settings and choose Sign in with Passkey.
- Select the option to create or add a passkey.
- Choose where to save it: a compatible hardware security key, a phone or another supported device.
- Complete the on-screen verification. For a hardware key, this normally means connecting or tapping the key and confirming its PIN or touch action.
- Give the passkey a recognizable name in the passkey list, such as “USB key” or “Android phone,” so you can identify it later.
- Sign out and test passkey sign-in in the same browser and on the device you expect to use. Do not delete your old sign-in method until the new method works.
If the hardware option fails, use a synced mobile passkey instead. Sony presents mobile passkeys as an alternative when a particular hardware key encounters compatibility issues.
What Steam Guard supports
Steam’s official security documentation centers on Steam Guard. The documented choices are codes delivered by email and codes generated by the Steam Mobile Authenticator. The mobile guide also describes scanning a Steam QR sign-in code and approving a login in the app.
Valve’s published guidance does not describe enrolling a FIDO2 security key, USB key or NFC key as a Steam Guard factor. Consequently, a key that works for a PSN passkey should not be advertised as a confirmed Steam authenticator. Steam could add another method in a future release, but you should rely on a method that Steam currently documents for your account.

Steam Mobile Authenticator details
- One Steam account can have only one Steam Mobile Authenticator active at a time.
- One mobile app can authenticate multiple Steam accounts, so households or users with several accounts do not need a separate phone app for each account.
- The app can provide sign-in codes, QR-based sign-in and approval prompts, depending on the login flow.
- Keep Steam recovery information, including recovery codes when provided, in a secure place separate from the phone that generates the codes.
Email-based Steam Guard is an alternative when you do not want to use the mobile app. Protect the email account itself with a strong, unique password and its own second factor; otherwise an attacker who controls your email may be able to obtain Steam Guard codes.
The practical two-service setup
For most users, the strongest arrangement supported by the current documentation is deliberately asymmetric: use a compatible FIDO2 security key as one PSN passkey, and use Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator (or Steam Guard email) for Steam.
| Goal | Recommended method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing-resistant PSN sign-in | PSN passkey stored on a checked-compatible FIDO2 hardware key | Uses the passkey standard Sony supports, while acknowledging hardware compatibility limits |
| Steam sign-in protection | Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator | It is the primary app-based method described by Valve and supports codes, QR sign-in and approvals |
| Steam without a smartphone authenticator | Steam Guard email codes | Email is an officially documented fallback, but the email account must be secured separately |
| Account recovery | PSN passkey management plus securely stored Steam recovery information | Each service retains its own recovery process; one key cannot replace both |
Should you buy a FIDO2 security key for this purpose?
It makes sense when
- You want a physical passkey for PSN and are willing to verify compatibility with your phone, browser and console workflow.
- You prefer keeping the PSN credential off a shared or frequently used computer.
- You can maintain a backup passkey or another recovery method.
It does not solve the problem when
- Your main objective is replacing Steam Guard with one USB device. Steam’s published methods do not confirm that capability.
- You cannot use the key’s connector, NFC interface or browser with the device on which you sign in.
- You plan to keep only one physical key and have no recovery plan for loss, theft, damage or a forgotten PIN.
Use precise product language when comparing devices: “FIDO2 security key,” “hardware security key for a PlayStation passkey” or “USB security key.” Avoid claiming that any particular model is a Steam authenticator unless Valve explicitly documents that enrollment method.

Compatibility checks before enrolling a key
- Identify your sign-in devices. List the phone, computer browser and PlayStation-related workflow you will actually use. A USB-A-only key is not convenient if your primary device has only USB-C and no adapter.
- Confirm software support. Use a current Safari, Chrome or Edge browser for PSN account management. Update iOS or Android when possible; PSN passkeys support most iOS 16+ and Android 9+ devices.
- Test the physical interaction. Make sure you can connect, tap or touch the key reliably and know its PIN if one is configured.
- Create the PSN passkey. Add the key through Account Management’s Sign in with Passkey flow, then complete a fresh sign-in test.
- Set up Steam separately. Enable Steam Guard through the mobile app or email path documented for your account. Do not wait until the PSN key fails to discover that Steam has no hardware-key enrollment screen.
- Record recovery information. Store Steam recovery codes and other account-recovery details somewhere accessible when your phone or key is unavailable. Keep enough information to identify which PSN passkey remains active.
Troubleshooting common failures
The PSN key is not detected
Try the same enrollment in a current Safari, Chrome or Edge browser, reconnect the key directly instead of through an unreliable hub, and verify whether your device requires USB-C, USB-A or NFC. If the key still fails, follow Sony’s suggested alternative and create a synced mobile passkey.
Passkey sign-in works on one device but not another
Passkeys are tied to the credential location and the device’s supported sign-in flow. Confirm that the second device is using a current supported browser and that the passkey is available there. A passkey stored only on a hardware key will not automatically appear in a phone’s passkey manager.

Steam Guard’s documented enrollment choices are email and the Steam Mobile Authenticator. If no FIDO2 or security-key option appears, that is consistent with Valve’s published guidance; use the mobile or email method instead of attempting to force the PSN key into Steam.

- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
The phone with Steam Guard is lost
Use the recovery information supplied during Steam Guard setup and follow Steam’s account-recovery process. Because one account can have only one active mobile authenticator, secure the account before registering a replacement phone. Keep recovery details offline or in another protected location.
How to think about a future Steam hardware-key update
If Steam later adds FIDO2 support, verify three things in Valve’s own documentation before changing your setup: whether existing accounts can enroll a key, whether the key is an additional factor or a replacement for Steam Guard, and what recovery process applies when the key is unavailable. Until those details are published, treat PSN passkey support and Steam Guard as separate systems.
Bottom line
One physical security key cannot currently be relied on as a shared authentication method for both Steam and PSN. Use a compatible FIDO2 key for a PSN passkey if that fits your devices, and protect Steam with its documented Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator or email method. Keep recovery information for each service, because enrolling one key with PSN does not enroll or recover your Steam account.
