Yes. OBS can stream to YouTube from a VPS around the clock if the server can encode your chosen video and sustain its upload bitrate. That makes it feasible, not guaranteed: there is no universal VPS specification or promise of uninterrupted service. You remain responsible for testing performance, monitoring the stream, and planning recovery.

What you need to know before setting it up

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
  • The VPS must handle the chosen video source and encoding workload while continuously uploading the stream. Official guidance does not specify a universal CPU, GPU, or memory requirement for OBS on a VPS.
  • YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), RTMPS, and upload capacity with headroom above the stream bitrate. A VPS’s advertised capacity is not proof of sustained performance; check the provider’s current configuration, network terms, and charges.
  • A live broadcast and a complete replay are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

Set up OBS on a VPS

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a stream using an encoder, then obtain its stream URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or repository. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Install OBS on the VPS and connect it. Select YouTube as the service if available, or enter the YouTube stream endpoint and key in OBS. Confirm that the VPS supports your intended video source, encoder, and continuous outbound traffic. A provider’s operating-system images, hardware acceleration, and usage terms vary; check its current documentation rather than assuming a particular setup.
  4. Choose settings to suit both the video and the server. In OBS output settings, use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the intended output and measured VPS capacity. YouTube’s current recommendations and supported settings are listed in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewing formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured ingest stream.
  5. Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the stream bitrate. Include any simultaneous backup stream in the total. The relevant figure is sustained outbound capacity under your actual workload, not just a brief speed-test result. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  6. Run a representative test. Test with the intended resolution, frame rate, motion, and audio before relying on the VPS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. A static test image may not reveal encoding or network problems that appear with real content.
  7. Start the broadcast and keep monitoring it. Confirm the preview and stream health before treating the event as live. Arrange a way to notice a failed process or connection and restart OBS or switch to a backup source. Test that recovery path; neither OBS nor YouTube documentation guarantees that a dropped process will reconnect to the same event automatically.

Choose settings and resilience deliberately

Quality versus server load

Resolution, frame rate, and encoder choice affect how much work the VPS must do. Test the actual target configuration on the specific server. The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a minimum vCPU count, GPU model, or RAM amount, so a generic “minimum VPS spec” would be misleading.

One process versus a recovery plan

A single OBS process is simpler to operate. Process monitoring, automatic restart, or a tested backup encoder can improve recovery, but require additional configuration and may add bandwidth use. These are operational design choices, not guarantees supplied by OBS. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing encoder failover in its streaming tips; OBS offers connection diagnosis in Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

Continuous event versus replay archive

If a complete replay matters, do not assume a single ongoing stream will produce one. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local backup. Consider capturing or dividing the broadcast independently into archive-friendly segments; shorter-than-12-hour segments align better with the stated archive behavior. For longer streams, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable according to YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common VPS streaming failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
OBS cannot connect to YouTube Stream URL or key, channel eligibility, network connection, or encoder configuration. Confirm the current endpoint and key in YouTube Studio, verify channel live access, and follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.
Stream health reports unstable or insufficient upload VPS outbound capacity, network congestion, or bitrate exceeding sustainable throughput. Check sustained upload performance and reduce the output bitrate if needed. Keep the recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate.
Video stutters or the VPS struggles to encode Server capacity, encoder selection, resolution, frame rate, or scene workload. Test the target settings on the VPS and lower processing demands until encoding is stable. No universal server-size prescription is established.
Broadcast stops after a host or process failure VPS availability, OBS process exit, network interruption, or missing recovery procedure. Check the host and OBS logs, restore the process or source, and test monitoring and restart/failover behavior before relying on unattended operation.
The live stream worked but the replay is missing or incomplete Archive limits for long broadcasts. Do not rely on YouTube to capture a stream exceeding 12 hours. Keep an independent recording or plan segmented archives.

Costs and operating trade-offs

A VPS avoids leaving a personal computer powered on, but shifts responsibility for server configuration, sustained network capacity, monitoring, and recovery to you. Provider prices, data-transfer limits or charges, hardware acceleration, availability, and terms differ and can change; check them directly before choosing a plan. No fixed VPS size or hosting provider is established as suitable for every OBS workload.

If you want a managed alternative for an uploaded-video YouTube stream rather than operating OBS on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists on YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer can stay off. Each slot streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, and has automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Plans are available by day, week, month, six months, or year; UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
