Its regular Windows protection can quarantine a detected threat so it is isolated, while Norton Rescue Disk can attempt to remove malicious code and keep the rest of a file intact. If that repair fails, Rescue Disk automatically deletes the file. Back up important files before cleanup when possible, and do not restore a quarantined file unless you have a specific reason to trust it.
What Norton does when it finds a Trojan
“Remove” can mean different things in Norton’s cleanup process: it may isolate a suspicious file, attempt to disinfect it, or delete it if it cannot be repaired. Quarantine protects the rest of the computer by isolating the detected item; it does not necessarily clean the item or leave it available for normal use.
On Windows, Norton says restoring a quarantined item does not repair it. The item may be disinfected during a later scan, but restoring it before then can expose the computer to risk. Norton cautions that restoring quarantined files poses a high security risk and recommends checking the file’s details and source before taking action. How to reduce the chance of losing important files
- Back up irreplaceable files before remediation if possible. Norton’s restore guidance applies to files that were previously included in a configured backup set; it is not a way to recover files that were never backed up. Norton lets you restore selected files or a backup set to the original location or a destination you choose. On a new device, the old folder structure may not be reproduced. - Let Norton contain or repair the threat. Quarantine reduces the chance that the suspicious item will affect other files, while Rescue Disk’s Windows automatic fix is a separate repair attempt. Follow Norton’s current instructions for your device and version.
- Keep backup media disconnected when practical. As a general precaution, connect it only while backing up or restoring. This helps avoid exposing a backup drive to an active infection; it does not establish that every backup is clean.
- Restore a quarantined item only after checking it. If Norton may have flagged a legitimate file, review its file insight and source details and submit a suspected false positive to Norton for analysis. Do not restore or exclude it simply to keep a program working.
If a normal scan does not resolve the infection
Norton’s Rescue Disk article describes a Windows recovery environment for scanning and remediation when Windows cannot be cleaned through ordinary scans. Its automatic fix attempts to preserve the non-malicious part of each infected file, but deletion is the stated outcome when repair fails. Back up data on any USB drive you plan to use to create recovery media, then follow Norton’s current Rescue Disk instructions.
