Meta announced preset AI transformations for short videos in the Meta AI app, on Meta.ai, and in Edits. For hands-on object selection and layered compositions, Edits also has a separate Cutouts tool. These are distinct workflows: one applies a supplied generative prompt; the other lets you isolate and track parts of a clip.
Which Meta video-editing tool should you use?

The country list and current limits for Meta AI’s generative video feature are not established in the cited launch announcement, so availability may depend on where you are and what the app currently offers.
How to apply a Meta AI transformation to a video
- Open a supported surface: use the Meta AI app, the Meta.ai website, or the Edits app.
- Upload a short video. Meta’s June 2025 announcement described uploading footage before choosing an edit.
- Browse and select a preset prompt. Meta’s examples included graphic-novel or vintage-comic looks, changes to lighting and mood, and a video-game-inspired transformation.
- Review the result, then share it. Meta said edits made in Edits or the Meta AI app could be shared to Facebook and Instagram; the Meta AI app and website could also share to the Discover feed.
At launch, Meta said there were more than 50 editing prompts and that users could transform 10 seconds of video for free for a limited time. Those are June 2025 launch details, not confirmed current limits or terms.
What Edits Cutouts does
Cutouts is for a more targeted edit than applying an overall style. It uses Meta Segment Anything Model 2.1 (SAM 2.1) to isolate an object and track it across a video. You can place the cutout on a layer, apply effects to selected parts of the clip, or put text and stickers behind the object.

Meta’s described workflow can suggest objects automatically or let you mark an object with positive and negative selection clicks. The app then generates a mask and tracks the selected object through the clip. This makes Cutouts useful when you want an object to remain distinct from the background or interact visually with other layers.
What the launch figures do—and don’t—show
Meta said Cutouts was used “hundreds of thousands of times” in the first 24 hours after Edits launched in 2025. In a separate engineering account, Meta reported a 1.8x throughput increase and a 3x reduction in end-to-end first-frame preview latency on an NVIDIA H100 GPU. These are company-reported adoption and engineering figures; the GPU benchmarks are not measures of performance on a typical phone.

Are Movie Gen and Muse Video available editing apps?
No general consumer availability is established by the cited material. Meta introduced Movie Gen as research in October 2024, describing video and audio generation, personalization, and text-directed edits to existing footage. Those research capabilities should not be confused with the announced Meta AI preset workflow or Edits tools.
In July 2026, Meta called Muse Video a preview and said it was “coming soon to creators and Meta AI.” That wording does not establish that Muse Video is generally available. Meta also identified synchronized audio and video and physically accurate fast motion as areas where it was still working to address performance gaps.

Do you need extra equipment?
No. The editing workflows described by Meta use an uploaded clip and its apps or website; a tripod is not required. A smartphone tripod for video recording is an optional way to capture steadier source footage, not a requirement for AI editing.
