What happened to Cybertrucks under magnets?
In a November 25, 2024 report, ExtremeTech described owners finding rust-like discoloration and corrosion after using advertising or decorative magnets on Cybertruck panels. One owner, posting as “Cybertooth,” said he removed advertising magnets after a month and found corrosion. The report describes pitting near a magnet’s edge; cleaning removed some discoloration but left white pits and a rough texture. Other owners in the discussion reported similar damage beneath magnets.
These accounts indicate visible surface damage. They do not include a controlled test of structural strength, corrosion rate, or failure rate, so they do not prove that magnets compromise the Cybertruck’s structure.
Why can a magnet affect the stainless-steel finish?
Notebookcheck’s account of Tesla’s owner-manual guidance notes that the Cybertruck’s exterior lacks the protective clear coat used on most vehicles. Tesla advises owners to remove corrosive substances immediately rather than waiting for a full wash. What should you do if you find a mark beneath a magnet?
- Remove the magnet promptly. Do not leave it in place while waiting for the next scheduled wash.
- Wash the area. Tesla’s quoted guidance says to use water and mild, non-detergent soap after removing a corrosive substance.
- Use solvent only for the specified residues. The manual excerpt says denatured alcohol may be used for tar spots and stubborn grease stains, followed immediately by washing with water and mild, non-detergent soap to remove the alcohol.
- Assess the surface after cleaning. The owner reports describe discoloration that can partly clean off, but also white pits and roughness that remain. The cited sources do not establish a repair method for pitting.
Are Cybertruck magnets or wraps safe?
The owner accounts concern magnets left against the body for an extended period; they do not test every magnet, attachment method, or wrap. The available evidence therefore cannot establish that every magnetic accessory will damage the finish, or that a particular wrap is safe. If preserving the exposed finish is the priority, avoid leaving magnets on it for prolonged periods and follow Tesla’s prompt-cleaning guidance if contaminants are trapped beneath an accessory.

Does this make the Cybertruck less “apocalypse-ready”?
The reports challenge the idea that rugged styling means the finish can be neglected. Tesla’s cited guidance calls for prompt removal of corrosive substances, and the owner accounts show that visible surface damage can occur beneath magnets. That is a maintenance concern; it is not evidence that the truck fails structurally or that its claimed rugged capabilities have been tested and disproven.
For buyers considering hardware upgrades, the distinction matters: cleaning and finish care address cosmetic exposure, while armor packages are marketed for protection from physical threats.
