Sometimes—but it depends on the sustained upload speed and stability of your specific connection, not on a broadband label or download-speed headline. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for a 4K/60 fps stream encoded with AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps with H.264. Its network guidance also recommends 20% upload headroom, making a practical starting target about 42 Mbps or 60 Mbps of available upload capacity, respectively, before other upload traffic.
Those figures are planning calculations based on YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. India has no single broadband performance profile, and the available provider information does not establish how many Indian connections can sustain this workload around the clock. Check and test the upload performance at your own address.
How much upload speed does 4K/60 streaming need?
The relevant figure is outbound upload capacity: the encoder has to send the live video to YouTube. A high download speed does not prove that the connection can do that. YouTube says inbound speed is often higher than outbound speed and that a stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth.
| Video codec | YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p, 60 fps bitrate | Planning target with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps | About 42 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | About 60 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder settings page also lists minimums of 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at this resolution and frame rate. Treat those as minimum settings, not recommended targets for planning a 24/7 stream. The 42 Mbps and 60 Mbps figures are the listed recommendations plus YouTube’s 20% headroom, rounded; they are not separate guarantees of reliability. If other devices or people are uploading at the same time, their traffic needs capacity too.

Why an Indian broadband plan’s headline speed is not enough
A plan may advertise a fast download tier while its upload speed is lower, or may not make upload performance clear in the headline. Do not assume upload matches download unless the provider explicitly describes the connection as symmetrical. Even a declared upload figure does not show how consistently your particular connection will deliver it through every hour of a continuous stream.

TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum download or upload speed. It requires providers to disclose typical download and upload speeds in tariff offerings, and says at least 90% of measured samples must equal or exceed the declared typical speed. That standard is useful when reading a plan, but it is not a promise that your connection will hold a particular bitrate continuously. See TRAI’s BroadBand FAQ.
Provider pages are examples, not a nationwide comparison. Airtel lists headline tiers including up to 40 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1 Gbps; those figures alone do not establish upload speed or availability at your premises. Jio describes JioFiber as symmetrical, but that statement should not be generalized to every Indian broadband plan or assumed to settle performance at a particular address. Check the exact plan and terms: Airtel Broadband Plans and JioFiber plans.

How to check whether your connection is suitable
- Find the declared upload speed for your exact plan and location. Check the provider’s tariff details rather than inferring upload from download. TRAI points subscribers to its MySpeed app and portal for speed measurements.
- Measure upload from the streaming computer. Test where the encoder will run, since a result on another device or elsewhere in the home may not reflect its connection path.
- Repeat at different times and under realistic load. A single favorable speed test cannot establish 24/7 performance. Include the household’s ordinary internet use, especially other uploads.
- Compare the result with the right target. Allow about 42 Mbps of available upload capacity for a 35 Mbps AV1/H.265 stream or about 60 Mbps for a 50 Mbps H.264 stream, then add capacity for concurrent uploads.
- Run a representative stream test before relying on it. Use motion and audio like the actual programme, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while it runs. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring its health during operation.
- Consider Ethernet between the encoder and router. A wired link can avoid depending on the local Wi-Fi path, but it cannot add ISP upload capacity or prevent an upstream provider outage.
What 24/7 operation changes
A speed test measures a moment; a continuous stream needs adequate upload capacity and a stable connection over time. Results can vary with household traffic and the connection’s performance at different hours, so assess the actual location rather than relying on one test or a plan’s maximum advertised download speed. Leave YouTube’s recommended headroom and watch the live stream’s health for signs that the feed is struggling.
No India-wide statistic establishes what share of broadband connections can sustain 24/7 4K/60 uploads, and the provider information cited here is not an independent 24-hour test of an ISP plan. The defensible answer is connection-specific.
