Possibly—but a Chromebook is not a guaranteed 24/7 streaming device. YouTube offers a browser-based webcam streaming option that may work on a particular Chromebook, but its documentation does not explicitly certify ChromeOS or any Chromebook model. You also need to plan around YouTube’s archive limit: a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured, so one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast risks losing its replay.

What a Chromebook can—and cannot—do

YouTube’s webcam option lets you start a camera-based livestream from a computer in a browser, without separate live-stream encoding software. YouTube lists Chrome 60+ or Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers, but that does not establish that every Chromebook, ChromeOS version, camera, or configuration will work. Treat your own device as an unverified setup until you test it.

For a straightforward study stream showing a desk, room, or person studying, the browser webcam route is the lower-complexity starting point. If you want to show a prepared looping video, add overlays, or use a more elaborate production, YouTube also describes encoder streaming for production setups; however, its documentation does not assure that a particular encoder or workflow will run on your Chromebook. Check compatibility separately before relying on it. YouTube’s live-streaming overview and webcam instructions explain the available routes.

Check eligibility before setup

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days.
  • The streamer must be at least 16 years old.
  • First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of your planned broadcast rather than waiting until the start time.
  • Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Confirm you have the rights to any music, ambient audio, video, or study material included in the stream.

These are YouTube requirements, not Chromebook-specific guarantees. See YouTube’s eligibility and live-streaming guidance.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Start with a test livestream

  1. Sign in to YouTube and open YouTube Studio’s Go Live flow.
  2. Choose Webcam.
  3. Select the camera and microphone you intend to use. Check the browser’s camera and microphone permissions if the devices do not appear.
  4. Enter the stream details and choose a visibility setting. Use a private or unlisted test before planning a public broadcast.
  5. Start the stream and check the picture, audio, and connection from another device if possible.
  6. Leave the Chromebook running for a meaningful test period, then check whether the stream remains active and whether the device’s power or sleep behavior interrupts it.

The exact result depends on the Chromebook, browser, camera, microphone, network, power, and sleep settings. A successful short test cannot establish that the same setup will run continuously for a day; no model-specific endurance figure or guaranteed uptime is established here.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning

A stream that runs continuously for 24 hours is not a dependable way to preserve a complete YouTube replay. YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you,” and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” If separate archives matter, end and restart before the 12-hour mark. Keep a local recording too if losing the source would be a problem. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

This also matters if you are working toward YouTube Partner Program eligibility: YouTube’s August 12, 2026 explanation says public archived livestreams can count as qualified watch hours, while live streams that are not archived do not. See YouTube’s explanation of qualified watch hours and Shorts views.

What can interrupt a long study stream?

A Chromebook may be suitable for a test, but continuous operation depends on the whole setup, not just the browser’s stated compatibility. Check the following before relying on a long broadcast:

  • Sleep and power: Confirm the Chromebook does not suspend or shut down during the stream. Test the settings under the same power conditions you plan to use.
  • Network: Use a stable connection and observe whether the stream stays connected over time. A brief successful start does not prove the connection will remain steady.
  • Camera and microphone: Verify the selected devices and permissions. Listen for unwanted room noise or audio that could create a rights issue.
  • Browser and device: Test the specific Chromebook and ChromeOS setup. YouTube’s Chrome browser guidance is not a certification of all Chromebooks.
  • Archive and recovery: Plan a restart before 12 hours if you need archives, and retain a local copy if the recording is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the study stream is a prerecorded video or playlist rather than a live camera view, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without leaving a Chromebook or other computer on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
