Yes. You can block a specific person or number in common messaging apps. Blocking stops messages from that sender; filtering unknown senders changes where messages appear or whether they notify you; reporting flags a message as spam. Those actions are not interchangeable, and the steps below apply specifically to Apple Messages on iPhone and Google Messages on Android.

What blocking, filtering, and reporting actually do

Option What it does Best suited to
Block a sender Stops messages from a selected contact or number from reaching you in the app. Related effects vary by platform. Repeated unwanted messages from the same sender.
Filter unknown senders Moves certain messages into another folder or category and may silence notifications; it does not necessarily block the sender. Reducing interruptions from people who are not in your contacts.
Report spam Shares a spam report with the app or provider. Whether reporting also blocks the sender depends on the app. Flagging suspected spam, especially when messages come from changing numbers.

Menu names and availability can vary by operating-system version, app, carrier, and region. The Android steps here are for Google Messages, not every Android messaging app.

How to block a sender on iPhone

  1. Open the conversation in Messages.
  2. Tap the sender’s icon at the top, then tap Info.
  3. Scroll and tap Block Contact.

Apple says messages from a blocked person or number are not delivered, and the sender is not told they have been blocked. Blocking in Messages also blocks that contact across Apple apps including Phone, FaceTime, and Mail. To review blocked contacts, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts. See Apple’s iPhone guide to reporting spam and blocking senders.

What to do about an unwanted group conversation

Apple says you cannot block a group conversation as a whole. Depending on the conversation, you may be able to leave it or turn off its notifications.

How to filter unknown texts on iPhone

Apple’s iPhone guide describes screening unknown senders into a separate folder without notifications unless you choose to allow them. It also describes sorting SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into categories such as Transactions and Promotions. Options vary by region and iOS version, so check the current Messages settings on your device. Filtering may not apply to a sender you have replied to three or more times. Read Apple’s guide to screening and filtering text messages.

What a Google Messages spam report shares

Google says a spam report sends the sender’s number to Google and can include the last 10 incoming messages. It may also create a separate “Spam reporting” conversation that sends the sender’s number and most recent message to your mobile carrier. Additional RCS or group-conversation metadata may be included. If you want to block without sending a spam report, choose the block-only option where available.

How to report suspicious texts in the United States

The FTC recommends forwarding unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM), reporting them through the messaging app, or filing a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC says forwarding helps your wireless provider spot and block similar messages. These reporting channels are U.S. options. More details are in the FTC’s guidance on recognizing and reporting spam texts.

How to handle a text that might be a scam

  • Do not click links in an unexpected text that asks for personal or financial information.
  • If the message might be legitimate, contact the company using a phone number or website you already know is genuine—not contact details in the text.
  • Block the sender if you want to stop messages from that specific number, and report the message through an appropriate channel when it appears to be spam.

Blocking one number is sender-specific; it does not establish that future spam from other numbers will stop. When unwanted texts arrive from changing numbers, filtering and reporting can complement blocking.

Which option should you use?

  • The same person or number keeps texting: Block that sender.
  • You want fewer interruptions from people outside your contacts: Use unknown-sender filtering if your messaging app and region support it.
  • A message looks like spam or a scam: Report it. On iPhone, reporting alone does not stop the sender; on Google Messages, reporting also blocks the sender.
  • You do not want to submit a Google spam report: Use block-only where available.

Wireless providers may offer tools or services that block calls and texts, and some call-blocking apps also filter texts. The FTC describes these as optional categories; check whether a specific tool supports text filtering in your region and review its privacy terms.
