Horror games can interfere with sleep or leave some players feeling anxious, particularly when a frightening, high-arousal session runs close to bedtime or its effects linger afterward. But the available evidence does not show that horror games inevitably cause insomnia or anxiety, or that they are uniquely harmful compared with other game genres.

Are horror games bad for sleep or anxiety?

Not for everyone. The more useful question is how strongly a particular game affects you, how long you play, and whether you play close to bedtime. Fear, suspense, startling sounds and the anticipation of danger can keep your mind alert after you stop playing. A player who feels calm afterward may have no sleep problem; someone who keeps replaying scenes or feels jumpy may need to change when or whether they play.

Evidence specifically about horror games is limited. A 2024 systematic review of 26 studies of adult video gaming and sleep found that outcomes varied with arousal, session duration and gaming frequency. It did not establish that horror games produce a distinct sleep outcome from other genres. That means general findings about stimulating games should not be turned into a claim that horror games always cause insomnia or anxiety.

Anxiety and sleep can also affect each other. The Sleep Foundation describes worry and hyperarousal as factors that can make it harder to fall asleep, while inadequate sleep can worsen anxiety and emotional health. For someone already prone to anxiety, panic symptoms, trauma-related symptoms or sleep reactivity, a frightening game may be more likely to have effects that last beyond the session.

Why can a horror game keep you awake?

The main concern is arousal, not simply the fact that the game is on a screen. Suspense, threat anticipation, jump scares and intense audio can leave attention activated when a player wants to wind down. A National Sleep Foundation consensus statement says screen content that evokes fear, anxiety or excitement can produce cognitive arousal that may delay or disrupt subsequent sleep.

Fear and suspense can linger

Stopping the game does not necessarily end the emotional response. A player might keep anticipating danger, replay a startling scene or wonder what is coming next. If that makes it difficult to relax, the session has affected the transition to sleep even if the player eventually falls asleep.

A session can also push bedtime later

A cliffhanger, a long chapter or the urge to play “one more” can displace sleep by extending the session. The 2024 review identified timing and duration as relevant factors, but it did not establish a universal safe session length or a single best time of day to play. The practical test is whether gaming is delaying bedtime or leaving too little time to wind down.

Overall gaming findings are not horror-specific

A 2014 observational study of adults found that each additional hour of daily gaming was associated with a 6.9-minute later bedtime and a 13.8-minute later rise time. In that sample, gaming above one hour a day carried a 30% attributable risk of poor sleep quality. These figures describe overall gaming volume, not horror games alone, and the observational results do not prove that gaming caused the sleep differences.

The broader evidence is not uniformly negative. In a 2025 controlled study, 60 minutes of action-game play did not compromise objective sleep quality among non-gamer adults. The study was not a horror-game trial, so it cannot establish what a frightening game does. It does add context: game type, session duration and exposure can matter, and not every gaming session produces the same result.

Can scary games cause nightmares or anxiety?

They may contribute to distress for some people, but the evidence cited here does not establish that horror games cause an anxiety disorder or that every player will have nightmares. A useful signal is a repeated change in mood, sleep or behavior after playing—not a blanket assumption about the genre.

HealthyChildren.org advises caregivers to pay attention to changes in a child’s sleep, mood or behavior after viewing scary content. It lists trouble falling asleep, nightmares, increased fears or worries, fear of being alone, avoidance, repeatedly talking about a scary scene, and increased anxiety or jumpiness as possible signs the content was too intense. These signs do not prove a game was the only cause, but they are reasons to check in and respond rather than dismiss the child’s reaction.

Adults can use a similar observation without treating it as a diagnosis. Notice whether a particular game is followed by rumination, dread, jumpiness, recurrent nightmares or next-day fatigue. If the pattern is consistent, that response is useful information: reduce exposure, stop playing that title, or move play earlier instead of trying to force yourself to tolerate it.

How can you reduce the chance that horror gaming affects sleep?

There is no evidence-based cutoff such as a guaranteed number of minutes before bed that makes horror games safe for everyone. Use timing, session limits and your own after-effects to decide what to change.

  1. Notice the pattern. For several sessions, pay attention to whether you feel settled after playing or remain keyed up, worried or preoccupied. Also notice whether bedtime moves later or sleep becomes more difficult. The goal is to identify a response, not to assume every bad night was caused by a game.
  2. Move intense play away from bedtime. If a frightening session leaves you alert or thinking about the game, avoid the most stimulating play immediately before sleep. Try an earlier time and leave a transition before bed; the evidence does not define a universally correct number of hours.
  3. Set a stopping point before you start. Choose a time or chapter limit and stop when you reach it, rather than letting a cliffhanger decide when the session ends. This addresses both prolonged exposure and bedtime displacement.
  4. Choose a lower-arousal option when needed. If you want to play later in the day, consider whether a less intense game or a less frightening part of the experience leaves you calmer. Frequent jump scares, threat and intense audio are useful features to consider when judging arousal, but no particular game can be declared safe for sleep without direct evidence.
  5. Respond to recurring after-effects. If a game repeatedly brings nightmares, jumpiness, dread or next-day impairment, stop playing it or move it earlier. Continuing simply to prove that you can handle it is not necessary.
  6. Seek appropriate support for persistent symptoms. Ongoing insomnia, panic, severe anxiety, recurrent nightmares or major daytime impairment warrant qualified medical or mental-health support rather than settings changes alone. The American Psychological Association identifies cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as an evidence-based intervention for insomnia.

What should parents watch for when children play horror games?

Children may not connect a nightmare or bedtime fear with a game they played earlier, so caregivers can ask about the experience and watch for changes afterward. HealthyChildren.org recommends paying attention to sleep, mood and behavior and discusses helping children separate fantasy from reality.

Take a child’s reaction seriously without assuming every scary game harms every child. If the child is frightened, listen to what felt upsetting, discuss what they saw, and reduce or stop content that seems too intense. Trouble falling asleep, nightmares, new worries, clinginess or fear of being alone, avoiding reminders, repeated discussion of a scene, or increased jumpiness are reasons to check in and consider a break.

For adolescents, the same individual-response approach is more useful than a universal rule. Consider the intensity of the content, how long a session lasts, whether it is displacing sleep, and whether distress continues afterward. A child’s age and maturity, supervision and ability to talk about what they saw all matter; the evidence does not support saying that every horror game is harmful to every young person.

What does the evidence not establish?

There is no reliable horror-game-specific percentage in the cited evidence showing how many players develop insomnia or anxiety because of horror games. The 30% attributable-risk figure and the bedtime and rise-time associations come from a 2014 observational study of overall gaming volume; they are not estimates of risk from horror games.

Nor can the 2024 review establish that horror is worse than every other genre. It explicitly identifies the need for more research on whether genres such as horror, strategy and sandbox games have different sleep effects. A 2025 action-game study provides context about controlled gaming and objective sleep, but it was not designed to answer that genre comparison. The most defensible conclusion is conditional: arousal, timing, duration and individual sensitivity can matter, while a universal harm claim is not supported.

That distinction matters when choosing a game. A product label or genre cannot tell you how you personally will respond, and the available evidence does not justify describing a particular horror video game as sleep-safe. Pay attention to the experience after play rather than treating the game’s category as a prediction of your outcome.

When is it time to get help?

Changing play habits is a reasonable first response to occasional, mild restlessness, but it is not a substitute for care when symptoms persist or seriously affect daily life. Seek help from a qualified clinician if insomnia continues, anxiety becomes severe, panic occurs, nightmares recur, or fatigue and distress interfere with school, work or relationships.

For ongoing insomnia, CBT-I is an evidence-based treatment identified by the American Psychological Association. A clinician can also help assess whether sleep or anxiety symptoms have causes beyond gaming. If a child is distressed, caregivers should involve an appropriate pediatric or mental-health professional when symptoms are persistent or impairing.

What should you take away?

Horror games are not automatically bad for sleep or anxiety. They can leave some players too alert to wind down, especially when sessions are long or close to bedtime, but research has not shown that the entire genre inevitably causes insomnia or is uniquely harmful. Use your own repeated after-effects to guide changes, and get qualified support for persistent or severe symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can horror games cause a clinical anxiety disorder?

The evidence summarized here does not establish that playing horror games causes an anxiety disorder. If anxiety is persistent, severe or affecting daily life, a qualified mental-health professional can assess it rather than assuming the game is the sole cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning down the volume or avoiding jump scares guarantee better sleep?

No guarantee is established. Those changes may reduce some sources of stimulation, but fear, suspense, session length and bedtime timing can still matter.

Are horror games safe if I play them during the day?

Playing earlier may give you more time to wind down, but the best time of day for gaming and sleep has not been established. Your own response after a session is a better guide than a universal assurance.

Can a blue-light filter prevent horror games from affecting sleep?

The evidence discussed here emphasizes emotional and cognitive arousal, timing and session duration; it does not show that a blue-light filter prevents horror-related sleep disruption. A filter should not be treated as a fix for lingering fear or a session that runs past bedtime.
