Yes—Google Keep can replace a basic to-do list app if your needs are quick checklists, note capture, simple organization, and occasional sharing. For due dates, deadlines, subtasks, recurring tasks, or dependable task notifications, Google Tasks is a better fit. Keep can still complement Tasks, but its reminder notifications on mobile now come through Calendar or Tasks.
What Google Keep can do for a to-do list
Keep is a note-taking app with checklist features, rather than a dedicated task manager. Google describes the feature simply: “You can keep track of tasks by creating a list in Keep.” Google Keep Help: Make a list
Create and manage checklists
You can create a list with a title and items, or convert an existing note into a checkbox list. Items can be reordered and indented to group them; the first item in a list cannot be indented. This works well for errands, groceries, packing lists, and other short checklists where the main action is marking items complete. Google Keep Help: Make a list
Keep lists beside notes
A checklist can live alongside regular notes and other content such as drawings and images. That makes Keep useful when a task list needs context—such as a grocery list beside meal notes—or when you want one lightweight place to capture ideas and simple tasks. Google Keep Help: Organize notes

Organize and share
You can label, color, pin, and archive notes, then search or filter them by note features. Google documents a limit of up to 50 labels. What changes with Keep reminders
Google says Keep reminders migrated to Google Tasks in the second half of 2025. You can view and manage migrated reminders in Keep, Tasks, Calendar, and Gemini, but mobile reminder notifications no longer come from Keep. To receive those alerts, install Calendar or Tasks on your mobile device and allow notifications. Existing location-based reminders cannot be newly created or received after the migration. Check reminder limits and titles
Google Tasks allows up to 100,000 tasks across all task lists and up to 20,000 uncompleted tasks per list. Google says that if your Keep reminder collection exceeds the 100,000-task migration limit, the oldest reminders do not migrate. These are documented product limits, not recommended working-list sizes. Google Tasks Help Google Calendar Help
There is also a title-editing detail to watch: changing only a Keep note’s title does not change the title of its reminder task. Edit the reminder title in Tasks or Calendar instead. Google Calendar Help

How to choose between Keep and Tasks
- Choose Keep if you mainly need fast checklists, notes beside tasks, simple organization, or collaborative lists.
- Choose Tasks if you need scheduled tasks, deadlines, subtasks, recurring schedules, or task notifications.
- Use both if you want Keep as a flexible capture space and Tasks for tasks that need structure or scheduling. Keep reminders remain viewable and manageable in both apps, while mobile alerts come from Calendar or Tasks.
Keep can replace a basic to-do list app, but it is not a like-for-like substitute for a task manager. The dividing line is whether a checkbox and a note are enough, or whether tasks need their own dates, structure, recurrence, and notifications.
