Yes. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted music. A match can prompt a warning and, if the material continues, interrupt or terminate the stream. If you keep an archive of the broadcast, it can also receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. Neither outcome is automatic for every game or track: the music, the relevant rights, and the rights holder’s policy matter.

“Stream loop” can mean a live broadcast that repeats gameplay, or a saved livestream played or watched later. The risks differ, so it helps to separate what can happen while you are live from what can happen to the archived video.

What can happen during a live gaming stream?

YouTube says it scans all live streams for third-party content. If its systems detect copyrighted material, YouTube may warn you. If the material remains, it may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube also describes replacing the stream picture with a placeholder in some circumstances. These live actions are not necessarily the same thing as a standard Content ID claim on a video.

A licensed song can still cause a live warning if the owner has not allowed your channel to use it. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content but still receive a warning to ask the owner to add the channel to its allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

What changes when the livestream is archived?

If you retain the broadcast as a video, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the livestream ends. That means an archived gaming stream can receive a claim even if the live broadcast was not interrupted. Conversely, a live warning or interruption does not by itself tell you what policy will later apply to an archived video.

According to YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance, the archive timing applies if you decide to keep the video. Treat the live broadcast and its VOD as separate checks when assessing music rights.

Original game soundtrack or licensed song?

Music created for the game

YouTube defines an original video-game soundtrack as a recording created primarily for use in a game, such as its score or background music. Its Content ID eligibility guidance says original video-game soundtrack references are valid only when owned by the video game’s publisher. This describes which references YouTube considers eligible; it is not blanket permission for every creator to stream or archive every game’s score.

Popular music licensed into a game

A game may include commercially released music licensed from a third party. YouTube explicitly excludes popular music that was not originally created for the game from its special original-soundtrack reference rule. That exclusion does not grant you rights to use the song: the game publisher’s arrangement may not cover your stream, archive, monetization, or territory.

YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance sets out the original-soundtrack distinction. Its video game and software content guidance says monetization of game content depends on the commercial-use rights granted by video game publishers.

A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike

A Content ID claim can apply a monetize, track, or block policy to a video. The policy can vary by country or region. A claim is distinct from a copyright removal request and a copyright strike; claims ordinarily affect the video rather than the channel. A live stream can nevertheless be terminated if copyrighted content remains or if the channel receives a strike.

If an archive is claimed, open the claim details and check the claimant, the identified segment, and the policy before choosing whether to accept, edit, or dispute it. Dispute only when you have a sound basis, such as rights that cover the use or a valid reason the match is mistaken. YouTube explains the distinctions in its Content ID claims overview.

How to reduce the risk before you go live

  1. Check the game publisher’s current streaming terms. Look for coverage of live broadcasts, archived videos, monetization, and your relevant territory. A general permission to show gameplay may not answer the separate question of licensed music.
  2. Check for a music-off setting or streamer mode. If the game offers one, review what it disables. It may mute only selected tracks, and it does not establish that other audio in the game is cleared.
  3. Treat separately licensed tracks as a separate rights question. The fact that a song plays in the game does not prove that your own livestream and VOD use are covered.
  4. Use music with permission for both live and archived use. YouTube recommends its Audio Library, Creator Music where available, original music, and properly checked third-party licenses. Confirm the license terms rather than relying on a “free” label in a description; that label does not prevent a Content ID match. See YouTube’s Audio Library information and Creator Music guidance.
  5. Keep records of permissions. Save the publisher or rights-holder terms and any license that covers your channel, the track, livestreaming, archives, monetization, and territory. If the rights holder licenses you but a live warning still occurs, ask about channel allowlisting.

If music is flagged: what to check

  • During the broadcast: Read the warning and identify whether the game’s music or another third-party sound is still playing. Follow YouTube’s on-screen instructions; continuing to broadcast flagged content can lead to interruption or termination.
  • On an archived video: Open YouTube Studio’s copyright details for the video. Check the claimant, claimed segment, and whether the policy is monetize, track, or block. The right response depends on your actual permission and the claimant’s policy.
  • If you believe your licensed use was missed: Contact the rights holder about allowing your channel. A license and an allowlist are related but distinct: the first concerns your permission; the second can help prevent the live system from interrupting a licensed stream.
  • If you lack the relevant rights: Consider removing or replacing the claimed segment using the options YouTube provides, or accept the applicable policy. Do not dispute simply because the track came with the game.

Can a 24/7 loop avoid music claims?

No streaming setup can grant music rights or guarantee that a track will not match Content ID. Whether you run a loop from a PC or a cloud service, the underlying question remains whether the rights cover the live broadcast and any archive. If a loop runs continuously, review the game’s music policy and soundtrack before leaving it unattended.
