Yes—email security tools can detect and block phishing written with AI by looking for suspicious senders, links, attachments, impersonation, and other threat signals. They do not need to prove that AI wrote a message, and polished grammar is no longer a reliable sign that an email is legitimate. Detection is not perfect, so organizations should combine filtering with reporting, user warnings, and strong account protections.

How can tools catch phishing if AI writes it well?

Many email defenses assess signs of risk beyond spelling and tone. They can check who sent a message, whether the sender is impersonating a trusted person or organization, where its links lead, whether an attachment is suspicious, and whether the message matches known threat context. These signals can expose a phishing attempt even when the wording is fluent.

CISA’s Microsoft Exchange Online security baseline recommends AI-based phishing detection alongside impersonation checks and user warnings. That is configuration guidance, not a test showing a particular product’s detection rate. CISA’s phishing guidance also points to suspicious or lookalike sender addresses, mismatched hyperlinks, and suspicious attachments as warning signs.

Why polished writing is not proof of legitimacy

Generative AI can produce convincing messages and lure documents without the translation, spelling, or grammar mistakes that sometimes gave phishing away. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s January 2024 assessment notes that AI can make these interactions more convincing, while also helping defenders detect and triage attacks. Treat grammar as a weak clue, not a security check: a polished message can still be fraudulent.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Nor is there a reliable universal test for AI authorship that organizations can use to decide whether an email is safe. The useful question is whether the message’s sender, request, links, attachments, and context are trustworthy.

Detection, blocking, and triage are different

A detection feature may flag a message, a filtering system may block or quarantine it, and an investigation tool may help an analyst understand a report. Those are related but distinct jobs. Microsoft’s Phishing Triage Agent is documented as helping security teams classify and investigate user-reported phishing using email-content analysis and threat-intelligence context. That describes investigation assistance; it does not promise that every AI-written phishing email will be blocked before delivery.

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

A 2024 preprint, “Analysis and prevention of AI-based phishing email attacks”, discusses machine-learning text analysis and the need to train systems on AI-generated examples. It does not establish a universal real-world detection rate or provide a comparable evaluation of current commercial email products.

What defenses should an organization combine?

Use several controls because no single signal or tool can guarantee that every malicious message will be caught. CISA recommends filtering, external-email indicators, staff training, reporting, and phishing-resistant multifactor authentication in its LockBit ransomware guidance. Its Exchange Online baseline also recommends combining AI-based detection with impersonation checks and user warnings.

  • Fits USB-A port : Insert the T110 security key into the USB-A port of each service and log in conveniently with one touch
  • For the driver download and user guide, please visit TrustKey Solutions Home support page.
  • Enable phishing and impersonation protections. Review what is available in your email platform and subscription; some protections require specific plan levels. Check current licensing with the provider.
  • Use link and attachment inspection. Where supported, configure analysis beyond initial delivery and make warnings for unfamiliar senders clear to users.
  • Make reporting actionable. Give staff a simple way to report suspicious messages and ensure reports reach a response workflow. Do not teach people to trust an email because it is well written.
  • Strengthen domain authentication. Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC to help address spoofing and identity abuse. Authentication does not prove that a message’s content is harmless.
  • Protect accounts against stolen credentials. Phishing-resistant MFA reduces the impact of credential theft; it is a complementary control, not an AI-authorship detector. CISA discusses these measures in its generative AI and elections guidance.

How to evaluate an email security tool

Do not rank tools by an unsupported claim that they can identify AI-written email. Compare controls and operational fit that you can verify:

  • Sender, domain, and impersonation analysis
  • Link and attachment inspection
  • Post-delivery scanning and remediation
  • Threat-intelligence context and integration with reporting or analyst workflows
  • False-positive handling, configuration requirements, and licensing
  • Whether evaluation methods are independently described and relevant to your environment

Test tools against representative, current attack samples and track missed threats, false positives, and time to investigate. Results from a vendor’s own test should be interpreted in light of its method and limits. The available sources do not provide a shared benchmark or a head-to-head ranking for current products’ detection of AI-generated phishing.
