Yes—unless your network configuration blocks a particular path. Internet access, communication with devices on other local networks, and communication between devices on the same VLAN are separate behaviors. A VLAN assignment alone does not guarantee that any of them are allowed or blocked.

Can IoT VLAN devices access the internet?

They can if their subnet has a route to the internet and the gateway or firewall permits outbound traffic. Administrators can also restrict or block WAN access. For example, GL.iNet’s IoT network documentation describes options that allow WAN access, block access to other WAN subnets while keeping internet access, or block internet access. The available settings and labels depend on the router and its software.

To determine what your devices can do, check the IoT subnet’s default gateway, its route to the internet, and the gateway or firewall’s outbound rules. A device joining an IoT-named SSID does not by itself tell you whether internet access is enabled.

Can they reach other local networks?

Reaching devices on another VLAN or subnet requires routed traffic. The router or Layer 3 gateway must have a path between the networks, and its policies must permit the traffic. Cisco Meraki explains that an upstream gateway must enable communication to another device—for example, through inter-VLAN routing and access control lists—in its Wireless Client Isolation documentation.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Check rules in both directions: whether IoT devices can initiate connections to trusted subnets, and whether devices on those subnets can initiate connections to IoT devices. If you need exceptions for a controller or local service, define those explicitly rather than assuming that the entire LAN is reachable.

A network name such as “IoT” is not an access-control rule. Confirm the actual routes and firewall policy before treating the subnet as separated from the rest of your LAN.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Can devices communicate with peers on the same VLAN?

Often, yes. Devices on the same Layer 2 network can typically exchange traffic without sending it through the inter-VLAN router or firewall. A firewall rule that blocks routed traffic between the IoT subnet and another subnet therefore may not stop communication between peers on the IoT VLAN.

Wireless access points may provide a separate client-isolation setting to restrict communication between wireless clients. Its scope depends on the access point, SSID, and network setup. Meraki documents isolation behavior for bridged wireless clients, while Ubiquiti distinguishes AP client isolation from VLAN-to-VLAN isolation controls. Check whether the setting applies to your devices and traffic; do not assume it also isolates wired devices or every kind of wireless client.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

How to check your IoT network’s actual access

  1. Confirm network assignment. Identify the VLAN and IP subnet each device uses, including the SSID or switch port it joins. Devices using different connection paths may not share the same policy.
  2. Check the gateway and internet policy. Find the subnet’s default gateway, confirm whether it has a route to the internet, and inspect outbound WAN rules.
  3. Review inter-subnet policy in both directions. Check routing and firewall rules between the IoT subnet and each trusted local network. Record any intentional exceptions, such as access to a controller.
  4. Review same-VLAN isolation separately. For wireless clients, inspect the AP or SSID’s client-isolation setting and confirm which clients and traffic it covers. Do not assume a routed firewall rule blocks Layer 2 peer traffic.
  5. Check IPv4 and IPv6 independently. A policy or feature may not behave identically for both protocols. Meraki’s documentation notes IPv4 limitations for some feature and firmware combinations, so verify the relevant version and settings.
  6. Use product-specific documentation. Interface names, defaults, and feature scope vary. For instance, Cisco’s guest wireless instructions describe an example for named Cisco equipment; they are not universal defaults.

What “isolated” should mean in practice

Before calling an IoT network “internet-only” or “fully isolated,” specify which paths are blocked and which are allowed. Internet access, routed access to other subnets, and same-VLAN peer communication need separate checks. A practical policy might allow internet access, deny IoT-initiated connections to trusted LAN subnets, permit a narrowly defined controller exception, and enable wireless client isolation where appropriate. Whether that policy is achieved depends on the specific gateway, firewall, switch, access point, and IPv4 and IPv6 configuration.
