The Windows Pro keys reported in 2023 were generic keys Microsoft had already published: they could help change or install an edition, but they did not activate Windows or provide a Pro license. A key that changes the installed edition is not the same as an entitlement to use that edition.
What the ChatGPT Windows key story actually showed
In 2023, Tom’s Hardware reported that ChatGPT returned generic Windows Pro keys that were already publicly available from Microsoft. The report described them as useful for installing or changing the Windows edition, not as retail licenses that activate a PC.
That distinction matters: a generic key is not a newly created license, and entering one does not establish that you have the right to use Windows 11 Pro. Do not rely on keys from a chatbot as a free upgrade or activation method.
Product key, edition upgrade, and activation are different things
Microsoft defines a product key as “a 25-character code used to activate Windows.” Windows can also activate with a digital license. Either way, activation requires a valid entitlement; a code that lets setup switch editions does not, by itself, supply one. See Microsoft’s current Windows activation guidance.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Edition change: The PC changes from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro. A generic key may be relevant to this installation step.
- Activation: Windows recognizes a valid Pro product key or digital license for that device. A generic key does not provide this entitlement.
Microsoft says activation helps verify that Windows is used only on PCs permitted by its Software License Terms. Read About Genuine Windows for its explanation.
How to check whether your PC already has a Pro license
- Open Settings → System → Activation.
- Check the Windows edition and activation state shown on the page.
- If the PC runs Home, check whether you have a Pro product key or a digital license associated with the device or your Microsoft account. Microsoft explains product keys and digital licenses in Find your Windows product key.
- If you own a valid Pro entitlement, follow Microsoft’s instructions to install or upgrade Windows using a product key. The edition-upgrade process does not remove the need for valid activation.
Legitimate ways to get Windows 11 Pro
If your PC does not already have a Pro digital license or valid key, Microsoft identifies buying a Windows digital license through the Microsoft Store as the purchase route. Use the current activation page to find the appropriate option for your device and setup: Activate Windows.

A free upgrade to Windows 11 from an eligible genuine prior Windows installation is a separate situation, associated with a digital license. It does not grant the separate Pro edition merely because a generic key can change the installed edition. Microsoft describes eligible upgrade licenses in Find your Windows product key.
