Yes, but not reliably in every case. Antivirus products can inspect many ZIP, RAR and other archive containers, scan embedded files and compare them with signatures or behavioral rules. Coverage depends on the format, compression method, recursion and size limits, encryption, and the product’s configuration. A clean archive result means only that the engine found no threat under those conditions.
Reverse shells are more difficult because they are a behavior chain rather than a single file type. A product may block a known malicious executable or script, while a novel shell that uses legitimate interpreters and encrypted traffic is more likely to be identified by correlating process, command-line, file and network activity. Microsoft, ClamAV and MITRE ATT&CK all describe layered inspection and telemetry as more dependable than a file-signature check alone.
What antivirus is actually trying to detect
Traditional antivirus compares files with known-malware signatures. Modern endpoint protection adds heuristic rules, cloud reputation, emulation, memory inspection and behavior analysis. These layers answer different questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Signature and reputation checks: Does the file or hash match something already classified as malicious?
- Static analysis: Does the file contain suspicious code, scripts, macros, packers or indicators even when its exact hash is new?
- Emulation and memory analysis: Does the payload reveal its behavior when partially executed or unpacked?
- Behavior correlation: Does a process download a file, write it to a user-writable directory, launch a shell and connect to an unusual external host?
ClamAV’s documentation explicitly says it scans inside archives and compressed files and protects against archive bombs. Microsoft Defender documentation describes archive and container scanning, cloud-delivered protection, behavior-based analysis, emulation and memory-oriented detection. These capabilities improve coverage, but Microsoft also cautions that no antivirus or protection technology is perfect.

Can antivirus scan inside a ZIP or RAR file?
Usually, yes, when the engine supports the container and can reach its members. The scanner parses the outer archive, extracts or inspects embedded entries within configured limits, and applies its normal detection methods to those entries. ZIP and RAR are common examples, but support and depth vary by product and version; do not assume that a feature documented for one engine exists in another.
What happens during an archive scan
- The engine identifies the container format and checks whether its parser can read it.
- It examines metadata and enumerates embedded members.
- It decompresses or otherwise inspects members within limits for recursion depth, total size and processing time.
- It applies signatures, reputation checks and, where available, heuristics or emulation to the contents.
- It reports the archive, the offending member, or both, depending on the product’s reporting design.
Scanning on download or when a file is opened gives the engine another opportunity to inspect the contents. A manual scan of an archive is useful when a file arrived through email, a browser download or removable media, but a result is never a guarantee that every future payload hidden in the container is safe.
Why an archive can look clean
- Unsupported or malformed format: The scanner may be unable to parse a newer, damaged or deliberately malformed container.
- Depth and size limits: Deeply nested archives or very large compressed data can exceed configured processing limits.
- Unknown payload: A new executable or script may not yet have a signature or sufficiently distinctive behavior.
- Runtime unpacking: The archive can contain a loader that decrypts or reconstructs the real payload only after execution.
- Exclusions: A path, extension or process excluded from scanning reduces the files the engine examines.
- Timing: A file can be scanned before a cloud verdict or security-intelligence update exists.
Password-protected archives
Password protection is a special case. If the scanner does not have the password or cannot decrypt the entry, it may be limited to the outer container, filenames, metadata and reputation. There is no single rule shared by all vendors that automatically opens or blocks every encrypted archive. Some products warn on password-protected attachments; others allow them and rely on scanning when the user extracts the contents.

Treat an encrypted archive from an unexpected sender as untrusted even if the outer file receives no detection. Obtain the password through a separate, trusted channel, extract into a controlled location, and scan the extracted files before opening them. Never disable protection merely to inspect a suspicious attachment.
Archive bombs and hostile containers
An archive bomb expands into an extreme amount of data or uses nested compression to consume scanner or system resources. ClamAV specifically documents protection against archive bombs. This protection does not mean every maliciously crafted container is harmless; it means the engine has safeguards intended to stop unbounded expansion. A scan that stops because a limit was reached should be treated as incomplete, not as a clean bill of health.
Will antivirus detect a reverse shell?
It may, but detection depends on what the shell does and which telemetry the product collects. A reverse shell is commonly a process on the victim system that initiates an outbound connection to an operator and provides command execution over that connection. The shell might be launched by a malicious binary, a script interpreter, a macro, a web application or a legitimate administration utility.

Known payloads are the easiest case
If the shell component, script or delivery tool matches a known malicious signature or reputation record, antivirus can quarantine it before execution. Static heuristics may also flag suspicious script content, embedded credentials, known command-and-control addresses or a binary that exhibits shellcode characteristics. These checks work best when the payload is unchanged and visible on disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBehavior reveals a novel shell
A previously unseen shell can still produce a recognizable sequence:
- An office application, service, web server or script host spawns a command shell unexpectedly.
- The child process invokes an interpreter with an encoded, obfuscated or unusually long command line.
- The process opens an outbound connection to a rare destination, nonstandard port or newly observed host.
- It downloads a file, writes an executable to a temporary or user-writable directory, and launches it.
- It creates persistence, tampers with security settings or attempts to disable logging.
MITRE ATT&CK’s Ingress Tool Transfer technique, T1105, describes adversaries transferring tools or files into a compromised environment. Its DET0060 detection strategy recommends correlating unusual processes that make external connections and then create files; it also calls out shell tools such as curl or wget that connect externally and create executables. That correlation is more informative than any one event in isolation.

Why encrypted traffic does not make a shell invisible
Encryption can hide command content from a simple network inspection device, but it does not hide every surrounding signal. Endpoint tools can still observe which process opened the socket, its parent process, command-line arguments, destination reputation, timing and subsequent file or memory activity. Network controls can evaluate destination, certificate, DNS and egress patterns without decrypting every command.
Microsoft’s web-shell research notes that malicious activity can blend into normal internet noise. Behavior-based detections therefore examine script writes, process execution and related activity rather than relying only on a recognizable string. A shell that uses ordinary utilities may evade a basic antivirus scan while remaining visible to an endpoint detection and response system that retains process and network history.

- No prior sample: A new payload has no exact signature and may resemble legitimate code.
- Obfuscation or packing: Encoded strings and packed binaries reduce useful static features until runtime.
- Encrypted or password-protected content: The engine cannot inspect what it cannot decrypt.
- Unpacking in memory: The disk file is a harmless loader; the malicious code appears only after execution.
- Legitimate-tool abuse: PowerShell, cmd, Python, curl, wget or remote-management tools can be used for both administration and intrusion.
- Configuration gaps: Real-time protection may be disabled, intelligence updates delayed, cloud analysis unavailable, or exclusions too broad.
- Insufficient context: A standalone scanner may see a script but not the network connection, parent process or file creation that makes the sequence suspicious.
These limitations explain why a clean scan should be interpreted as “no threat identified by this engine, at this time and configuration,” not as proof of safety.
Do you need EDR or a firewall as well as antivirus?
For ordinary home use, a current antivirus product with real-time and cloud protection is an important baseline. Systems that run servers, handle sensitive data or face untrusted files benefit from additional telemetry and network controls. The tools address different parts of the attack chain:
| Control | What it can see or stop | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Antivirus | Known files, archive members, suspicious scripts, reputation and local behavior | May miss novel, encrypted, unpacked or context-dependent activity |
| EDR | Process trees, command lines, file creation, memory events, persistence and network connections over time | Requires deployment, tuning and an analyst or response process |
| Host or network firewall | Unapproved inbound or outbound connections and destination-based egress policy | Cannot determine by itself whether an allowed process is malicious |
| Cloud and reputation services | Rapidly changing file, URL, domain and behavioral intelligence | Needs connectivity and careful privacy and policy review |
Network egress restrictions are especially useful for reverse shells. Allow only the outbound destinations and ports required for the role where practical, alert on rare destinations, and require authentication or proxies for administrative traffic. These controls may not prevent every tunnel, but they reduce the paths available to an already-running shell.
Practical protection checklist
- Keep real-time protection enabled. On Windows, verify the current Microsoft Defender real-time and cloud-delivered protection settings in Windows Security. On systems using ClamAV or another engine, confirm that scheduled and on-access scanning are actually deployed; an installed scanner that is never invoked provides no real-time coverage.
- Update security intelligence and the engine. Updates add signatures, cloud reputation and detection logic for newly observed files and behaviors.
- Scan before extraction or execution. Do not open an archive simply because its filename looks familiar. Scan the downloaded container, then scan extracted contents, especially scripts, installers and files from user-writable directories.
- Review exclusions. Exclude only paths and processes with a documented need, and revisit every exclusion after software changes. Exclusions reduce the very inspection that would otherwise catch a payload.
- Restrict scripting where appropriate. Limit macro execution, constrain unsigned scripts and monitor interpreters that are rarely needed on a particular workstation or server.
- Collect process and network telemetry. Record parent-child process relationships, command lines, DNS and connection destinations, file writes and persistence changes. This is the context needed to identify a reverse-shell sequence.
- Control outbound traffic. Use host firewalls, network firewalls, proxy policies or DNS filtering to reduce unauthorized command-and-control paths.
- Submit suspicious files to the vendor. A sample that is not detected today may help improve a future signature or cloud verdict; follow your organization’s data-handling policy before submission.
What to do when a scan finds a suspicious archive or shell
- Do not open the archive, run the script or reconnect removable media.
- Preserve the alert details, filename, path, detection name, timestamp and affected account.
- If a reverse shell or active compromise is plausible, isolate the host from the network using the endpoint platform or by disconnecting it, while avoiding actions that destroy forensic evidence.
- Run the product’s full scan and, where supported, an offline scan from trusted media or a pre-boot environment.
- Review recent process trees, outbound connections, downloaded files, persistence locations and security-setting changes for the period before the alert.
- Reset credentials from a separate clean device if theft is possible, remove persistence, patch the exploited service and restore only verified files.
- Escalate to your organization’s incident-response process or a qualified responder when a server, privileged account or sensitive data may be involved.
Antivirus can inspect many malicious archives and can sometimes detect reverse shells, but neither result is binary or guaranteed. Archive format support, decryption, runtime behavior, telemetry quality and configuration determine what the engine can see; layered endpoint and network controls determine how much of the remaining gap is covered.
