Yes: a Raspberry Pi with suitable Wi-Fi hardware can host a wireless hotspot, and it can share an internet connection with devices that join it. That makes an old Pi useful for a small, specific networking job—not a proven replacement for an expensive router. Raspberry Pi’s published benchmark tested a Pi as a Wi-Fi client, not as an access point competing head-to-head with retail routers.

What a Raspberry Pi can do for your Wi-Fi

A Raspberry Pi can broadcast its own wireless network, letting phones, laptops, or other devices connect to it. Raspberry Pi’s official networking guide documents configuring a hotspot with NetworkManager. The Pi needs a suitable built-in wireless module or adapter, and clients need an upstream connection if they are to reach the internet.

In the standard routed arrangement, the Pi connects upstream through Ethernet or a second Wi-Fi device and gives hotspot clients a separate private network. The clients can access the internet through the Pi, but they are not automatically part of the wired local network: they cannot directly interact with wired-network clients other than the Pi. This is a routed hotspot, not a transparent bridge. Raspberry Pi’s wireless access-point documentation explains the setup and network distinction.

Choose the setup that matches your connection

Ethernet in, Wi-Fi out

This is the straightforward option when the Pi can connect to the router or modem by Ethernet. The cable supplies the upstream connection, while the Pi broadcasts a separate wireless network. A second Wi-Fi adapter is not inherently needed for this arrangement.

Wi-Fi in, Wi-Fi out

If the Pi must join an existing wireless network and broadcast a different one at the same time, plan for two wireless interfaces. Raspberry Pi’s hotel-hotspot tutorial describes using onboard Wi-Fi plus a USB Wi-Fi adapter, and says at least one adapter must support access-point (AP) mode. The exact combination still depends on the hardware and driver support. The official hotspot tutorial gives a 2.4 GHz MediaTek MT7601U adapter as an example; that example is not a current compatibility guarantee or product endorsement.

Repeater-style projects

RaspAP documents a repeater setup that uses a default 2.4 GHz access point and a USB dongle to connect to an existing router. Treat this as a separate project path rather than assuming every Pi can repeat Wi-Fi with one radio. The resulting topology and compatibility depend on the hardware and configuration. RaspAP’s repeater documentation describes its approach.

Check your Pi model before you start

“Old Raspberry Pi” does not identify the wireless capabilities. For example, Raspberry Pi’s model information says the Pi 3B and Zero W have 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi, while the Pi 1B, 1B+, and 2B have no built-in Wi-Fi. The Pi 4 Model B specifications list dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet. Check the exact board, rather than assuming it supports 5 GHz or has an onboard radio. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started model information and the Pi 4 Model B specifications.

For a USB Wi-Fi adapter, verify both Linux driver support for the Raspberry Pi OS and kernel you plan to use, and AP-mode support for the adapter’s specific chipset. A product that can connect to Wi-Fi as a client is not necessarily able to broadcast a hotspot. Any adapter’s compatibility should be checked against the exact setup; do not assume that an example from a tutorial will work with every board or current software.

Use instructions for your Raspberry Pi OS version

Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and later use NetworkManager by default, so older tutorials that rely on different networking tools may not match the current system. On dual-band devices, set the WLAN country before enabling wireless networking. Follow the current Raspberry Pi access-point guide for the supported commands and configuration details for your system.

Will it outperform an expensive router?

That comparison has not been established by the available evidence. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s benchmark article describes a Pi connected as a client to an 802.11ac router in line of sight; it does not measure the Pi acting as an access point against dedicated routers. It therefore cannot support a claim that a Pi beats expensive routers. Read the benchmark article for the test context.

To make a meaningful comparison, the same client devices and location would need to be used while measuring throughput, latency, coverage, and performance with multiple clients. It would also need to account for Wi-Fi band and generation, antennas, network features, reliability, maintenance, and the full cost of any adapter or setup components. The cited sources do not provide a like-for-like comparison on those measures, so there is no substantiated general winner.

When reusing a Pi makes sense

  • You need a configurable hotspot for a small or specific project.
  • You can provide Ethernet upstream, or you have a second Wi-Fi interface that supports the required mode.
  • You are comfortable checking model, driver, and AP-mode compatibility and maintaining the configuration.
  • You do not need to assume that the Pi will match a dedicated router’s coverage, client capacity, or convenience.

A matching power supply and microSD card may be needed to operate the board, but they are setup components, not Wi-Fi upgrades. Requirements vary by model; Raspberry Pi specifies microSD storage and a minimum 5V/3A input for the Pi 4 Model B in its published specifications.
