It may feel more comfortable, but an “eye-friendly” label by itself does not show that a screen will reduce eye strain. Glare, poor room lighting, difficult-to-read text, and long stretches of near work can all affect comfort. American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) guidance emphasizes breaks, screen position, and glare control—not a special display category—as practical ways to help.

What an “eye-friendly” label does—and does not—tell you

The phrase is a marketing description, not proof of a clinical benefit. The AAO guidance cited here does not establish “eye-friendly” screens as a general treatment for eye strain, and it does not show that one display technology reliably prevents discomfort.

A screen could still suit you better if its finish reduces reflections, its brightness and contrast are easy to adjust, or its text is comfortable to read at your usual distance. Those are useful comfort and setup features, not a guarantee that the screen will prevent or treat symptoms.

Why screens can make your eyes uncomfortable

After prolonged screen use, some people experience temporary dry eyes, blurry vision, tearing, or headaches. One contributor is reduced blinking during sustained screen work. The AAO says people normally blink around 15 times per minute, but that rate can be cut in half when staring at screens or doing other near work such as reading. Less frequent blinking can leave eyes feeling dry or strained.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

For the AAO’s overview of symptoms and screen habits, see Digital Devices and Your Eyes. The guidance describes discomfort, not proof that an “eye-friendly” display prevents it.

What to look for if you are choosing a screen

Judge specific features against the problem you actually notice. A feature that helps with visible reflections may be useful in a bright room, while adjustable brightness may help you match the display to the room. None of these features has been established in the cited guidance as a treatment for eye strain.

  • Monitor Management Software: ASUS DisplayWidget Center lets users easily change monitor settings via an intuitive interface
  • Reflections and glare: Check whether lights or windows reflect on the display from your usual seat. A matte screen filter is an option if glare remains bothersome.
  • Brightness and contrast: Look for controls that let you make the display comfortable to read under your room’s lighting.
  • Text legibility: Consider whether text is clear at the distance where you normally work.
  • Positioning: Make sure the display can be placed so you can look slightly downward at it.

Changes to try before buying a replacement

  1. Take visual breaks. Pause periodically and look into the distance rather than focusing continuously on nearby text or a screen.
  2. Set a comfortable distance and angle. Sit about 25 inches from the screen, or roughly an arm’s length away, and position it so your gaze falls slightly downward.
  3. Adjust the room and display. Reduce reflections where possible, then adjust room lighting, screen brightness, and contrast. If glare remains an issue, consider a matte screen filter as an optional glare-reduction accessory.
  4. Respond to dryness. If your eyes feel dry, artificial tears may help. Persistent symptoms warrant advice from an ophthalmologist.

These practical steps are described in AAO guidance and its clinical reference on computer use: AAO’s digital-device guidance and EyeWiki’s Computer Vision Syndrome reference. EyeWiki marks its review status as update pending.

Do blue-light glasses help with screen-related eye strain?

The AAO does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for general computer use to relieve eye strain. As the Academy puts it, “The Academy does not recommend any special blue light-blocking eyewear for computer use.” Blue light exposure in the evening and its possible effect on sleep timing are a separate question from whether glasses relieve eye discomfort.
