Possibly, but it is not verified from “Rome ES” alone. ASUS documents EPYC 7002 (Rome) and 7003 support for the KRPA-U16, but that family-level support does not establish that a particular engineering-sample CPU will POST or run reliably. Check the sample’s exact identifying code and the board’s applicable BIOS against ASUS’s current CPU support information before buying or powering it on.

What “KRPA + Rome ES” does—and does not—tell you

The likely board is the ASUS KRPA-U16, a single-socket Socket SP3 server motherboard. “Rome” identifies AMD’s EPYC 7002 processor family; “ES” commonly means engineering sample. The phrase does not identify a specific processor model, stepping, or firmware requirement, so it is not enough to confirm compatibility.

ASUS’s KRPA-U16 User Manual says the board’s Socket SP3 is designed for AMD EPYC 7002 and 7003 Series processors. That is evidence for those processor families, not a blanket validation of every pre-production sample. The exact ES CPU’s support status remains unresolved until its identifier is checked against ASUS’s current support list and relevant BIOS information.

Check the ES CPU and BIOS before assembly

  1. Get the complete CPU identifier. Ask the seller for the exact code printed on the processor or otherwise supplied by AMD, including any stepping or revision details. “Rome ES” is too broad to match reliably.
  2. Check ASUS’s CPU support information for the KRPA-U16. Match the identifier as precisely as ASUS’s current list permits; do not treat a production EPYC 7002 entry as proof that an ES sample is supported.
  3. Check the BIOS version and notes. ASUS directs KRPA-U16 Rome BIOS downloads to the KRPA-U16 BIOS download page. Confirm the board’s installed version and any stated CPU requirements before attempting a first boot.
  4. Confirm the board’s history. ASUS’s Rome boot FAQ describes a particular repair-return scenario involving KNPA-U16 and RS500A-E9 systems that may have reverted to Naples support, and instructs users to follow the upgrade procedure for Rome. It is not a statement that every KRPA-U16 needs that procedure. If this board came from a repair or system conversion, establish its BIOS history and follow the model-specific ASUS instructions.

If ASUS does not list the exact sample or give enough information to establish its support, treat the result as unverified—not as a confirmed incompatibility, but not as a safe-to-buy or guaranteed-to-boot configuration either.

Plan memory around the board’s eight-channel layout

The KRPA-U16 has 16 DDR4 DIMM sockets across eight memory channels. ASUS lists RDIMM, LRDIMM, and LRDIMM 3DS module categories, but that does not mean every capacity, rank, or speed within those categories is supported. Match the precise module part number and intended capacity against ASUS’s current memory approved list before purchasing.

In its manual, ASUS states: “6 DIMM configuration is not recommended for AMD EPYC™ 7002 Series processors.” Keep that qualification specific to EPYC 7002 rather than applying it to every processor generation. For a 128 GB module question, the capacity alone is not enough: validate the exact module specification and population plan.

Check physical fit, cooling, and installation hardware

ASUS lists the KRPA-U16 as an EEB board measuring 305 × 330 mm and recommends an ATX 2.2-compliant chassis. Verify the case supports that board size and has suitable airflow and clearance for the chosen CPU cooler, memory, and expansion cards. A documented system pairing is ASUS’s RS500A-E10, whose manual describes a system built around the KRPA-U16/SYS board and EPYC Rome 7002 processors. That validates a documented system configuration, not a custom case, cooler, power supply, or ES processor.

The KRPA-U16 manual specifies T20 screws for CPU load-plate and heatsink installation and recommends a load-plate screw torque of 16.1 ± 1.2 kgf-cm (14.0 ± 1.0 lbf-in). Use the manual’s installation procedure and appropriate tools; ASUS warns that incorrect CPU installation can damage the processor or socket. Do not force the processor into place or improvise around socket protection.

What to establish before committing to the build

  • The board is specifically an ASUS KRPA-U16, and you know its installed BIOS version and history.
  • The CPU’s complete ES identifier has been checked against current ASUS support information; if it is not explicitly covered, compatibility remains unverified.
  • The selected DDR4 RDIMM, LRDIMM, or LRDIMM 3DS modules and their population plan match ASUS’s current memory list.
  • The chassis supports the board’s 305 × 330 mm EEB dimensions, with suitable cooling and airflow for the planned configuration.
  • The seller’s return terms account for the possibility that an unlisted engineering sample will not POST or operate reliably.
