Yes—if you have already authorized the purchase or set a condition for it. That is different from an assistant buying something with no permission at all. Whether you must approve the final checkout depends on the service and how you set it up: OpenAI’s published ChatGPT Instant Checkout flow asks you to confirm the order details, while Amazon describes purchase instructions that can be given in advance.
What “without your approval” can mean
There are two different situations:
- No fresh approval at checkout: You previously told the assistant to make a defined purchase or to buy when a stated condition is met. The instruction may let it act later without asking again.
- No permission at all: The assistant buys something you never asked it to buy or otherwise authorized. The cited product descriptions do not establish that as an acceptable or standard feature.
Purchase capability alone does not tell you what an assistant is allowed to do. Check the authorization flow for the specific service and the instruction you gave it.
How current examples handle approval
ChatGPT Instant Checkout
OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 announcement describes a flow in which you tap “Buy,” confirm the order, shipping, and payment details, and complete the purchase in ChatGPT. OpenAI says users explicitly confirm each step in this experience. The merchant handles order acceptance or decline, payment processing through its existing provider, fulfillment, and support; ChatGPT passes information between you and the merchant. OpenAI’s live developer documentation describes the underlying protocol: ChatGPT collects buyer, fulfillment, and payment information, then creates or updates a merchant checkout session. The merchant validates the order, selects fulfillment options, calculates and charges tax, assesses payment and risk signals on its own systems, and accepts or declines the order. In this protocol, a delegated payment request is one-time, has a maximum chargeable amount, and expires. These details describe OpenAI’s implementation, not every shopping assistant. Amazon shopping agents
Amazon describes Rufus as able to shop on a customer’s behalf using instructions such as “Buy this dress when it drops to $75” or “Order both pairs of headphones I browsed yesterday.” These examples show a user setting an instruction or condition in advance. They do not specify the exact confirmation prompt or settings every current user will see. Amazon also describes Buy for Me as completing purchases for products found both on and off Amazon; check the live product for current availability, market coverage, and controls. What to check before delegating a purchase
Before setting a task, make the instruction as specific as the service allows. Practical checks include:

- The exact item, seller, and quantity.
- A maximum price or price-trigger condition.
- Whether the instruction authorizes one purchase or repeat orders.
- The delivery address and payment method.
- How to cancel the task or revoke the authorization.
This is a practical checklist, not a claim that every assistant provides each control. Review the service’s live settings and terms to see what it actually supports.
Verify the checkout and merchant rules
When you are shown a checkout, check the final price, taxes, fees, shipping, availability, and any return or warranty terms before buying. OpenAI’s shopping guidance says shopping research can make mistakes and recommends confirming these details on the retailer’s site, which is the final word on price and availability. Merchant participation and platform rules matter too. Amazon’s notice says a policy effective March 4, 2026 requires agents accessing Amazon Services to identify themselves as automated systems, follow its Agent Policy, and stop accessing the services if Amazon requests. In a separate November 4, 2025 statement about Perplexity’s Comet, Amazon said third-party applications making purchases for customers should operate openly and respect service providers’ decisions about participation.
