Yes—usually the software and person operating an AI API key can see every prompt sent through it and every response returned. An API key authenticates requests; it is not automatically a universal login to the provider’s account, dashboard, billing records, or personal data. Additional visibility depends on who runs the client application, whether an employer or gateway records traffic, what provider logging is enabled, and which organization roles or endpoint scopes the key has.

The short answer: what a key does and does not reveal

An API key is a credential attached to an API project, organization, or account. It lets an application prove that it is allowed to call particular endpoints and charge usage to the associated project. It does not, by itself, turn the holder into an administrator or grant a complete view of the provider’s web dashboard.

There are two different questions hidden in “can the key holder see it?”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can the application operator see the conversation? Yes. The program constructs the request before transmission and receives the response afterward, so its operator can inspect, save, filter, or forward both.
  • Can the key holder see account information? Only if the key’s project permissions, organization role, dashboard access, or separately authorized endpoints allow it. A model-request key should not be treated as a dashboard password.

Even when a provider does not retain prompts for ordinary operations, the customer’s own application, reverse proxy, API gateway, tracing system, database, or support tooling may have already copied the content. Provider retention and application-side visibility are separate controls.

Who can see prompts and responses?

The caller and application owner

The immediate caller has the clearest view. A client must hold the prompt in memory or a request body before it sends it, and it receives the model output in a response. Anyone who operates that client—an employee, contractor, software vendor, or administrator of a shared service—can potentially read the material.

This remains true when the key is hidden in a server. A browser may send text to a company’s server; the server then adds the company’s key and calls the model provider. The browser user cannot assume that the server discards the text merely because the provider’s key is not visible in the page.

An employer, team, or gateway administrator

An organization can gain a second copy through a reverse proxy, gateway, observability agent, request tracer, or custom database. These systems commonly record URLs, headers, token counts, request bodies, responses, user IDs, and timestamps. A gateway can therefore expose prompts even if the provider’s dashboard does not show them.

Project separation matters. If a company gives an employee a key from a shared production project, administrators of that project may have access to logs, files, usage data, or gateway records. A separate project with restricted roles limits the blast radius, but it cannot hide text from the service that submits the request.

The model provider

Provider infrastructure may process content for abuse detection, safety, troubleshooting, legal obligations, or an expressly enabled data-sharing program. The exact retention period and access path vary by provider, feature, contract, and organization setting. “Not used to train models” does not mean “never processed or retained”; training, safety monitoring, and customer-controlled logging are different purposes.

What an API key does not automatically expose

A key used to generate a model response normally identifies a project and authorizes selected API calls. It does not automatically reveal the holder’s personal email, unrelated projects, organization membership, payment card, or complete chat history from a consumer application.

Those details are protected by separate dashboard sessions, organization roles, OAuth grants, or endpoint-specific scopes. A key may still be dangerous if it is broadly scoped: a key allowed to list files, retrieve stored documents, submit batches, or manage other keys can expose more than a key restricted to one inference endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permissions are also provider-specific. Some systems apply role-based access control (RBAC) to both API and dashboard surfaces; others use project-level credentials plus separate cloud roles. Always distinguish authentication (which project made the call) from authorization (which resources that caller may use).

Provider-by-provider visibility

Provider Request and response logging Retention or zero-retention option Who can access administrative records Key and role controls
OpenAI API OpenAI documents abuse-monitoring logs that may contain prompts, responses, and metadata derived from that content. Organization owners can separately opt in to sharing feedback, evaluation data, fine-tuning data, or API inputs and outputs. Default abuse-monitoring retention is up to 30 days, with longer retention possible for legal or safety reasons. OpenAI says API data is not used to train or improve models unless the customer explicitly opts in. Access depends on organization and project roles, enabled logging, and any customer-operated proxy or application logs. RBAC applies across API and Dashboard surfaces. Project roles and API-key scopes govern model, file, batch, key-management, and other endpoints. A full secret key is shown only at creation.
Google Gemini API Project owners can opt in to logs containing requests, responses, and metadata for supported billing-enabled projects. The logs are private to the Google Cloud project. The cited credentials and logging documentation does not state one universal retention period. If an owner contributes logs to datasets for product improvement, Google says human reviewers may read, annotate, and process the shared inputs and outputs after privacy protections are applied. Project owners and users with appropriate Google Cloud project permissions can access enabled logs; a proxy or application operator can also retain its own copy. Google states that API keys do not grant access to account information and are not used for authorization. The key identifies a project and supports quota and API access; user-data authorization requires OAuth or another appropriate mechanism.
Anthropic Claude API The Compliance API Activity Feed exposes administrative and resource events for API-key-authenticated workloads, not prompt text or model responses. Customer applications, proxies, and separately configured logs can still capture content. Eligible Claude API features can use a zero-data-retention arrangement. Under ZDR, Anthropic says it does not store prompts or responses at rest after returning the response; eligibility depends on the feature and organization configuration. Compliance and console visibility follows organization roles. The basic User role cannot view API keys, usage logs, or billing details; higher roles receive selected management or financial access. Console roles include User, Developer, Billing, and Admin, with different management capabilities. API-key access does not itself grant every console privilege.

OpenAI: what the key holder and organization can see

OpenAI’s data-controls documentation says abuse-monitoring logs may contain customer prompts, responses, and metadata derived from that content. The documented default is retention for up to 30 days; legal or safety requirements can extend it. This is a provider-side record and is distinct from any logs kept by the customer.

OpenAI states that, as of March 1, 2023, data sent to the API is not used to train or improve OpenAI models unless the customer explicitly opts in to share it. Organization owners can enable sharing of feedback, evaluation or fine-tuning data, or API inputs and outputs. An employee using a company project should therefore ask both whether sharing is enabled and whether the company captures requests before they reach OpenAI.

OpenAI’s RBAC model covers API and Dashboard surfaces. Project roles and key scopes can permit or deny model calls, file operations, batch jobs, key management, and other endpoints. A key created for inference should be restricted to that purpose where possible. The full secret is displayed only when the key is created, and OpenAI advises not sharing it.

Google Gemini API: project identity is not Google-account access

Google’s credentials documentation explicitly says that API keys do not grant access to account information and are not used for authorization. A Gemini key identifies the Google Cloud project and supports API access and quota; access to user data requires OAuth or another suitable authorization mechanism.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That separation does not make prompts invisible. For supported billing-enabled projects, a project owner can opt in to request, response, and metadata logging. Those logs are private to the Cloud project, so a person with the relevant project permissions may read them. If the owner contributes logs to product-improvement datasets, Google says human reviewers may read, annotate, and process the shared inputs and outputs after privacy protections are applied.

As with every provider, a company-controlled client or gateway can record the text regardless of whether Gemini logging is enabled. Check the application’s privacy policy and the project’s logging configuration rather than inferring privacy from the key format.

Anthropic Claude API: ZDR and console roles

Anthropic offers zero-data-retention arrangements for eligible Claude API features. Under ZDR, Anthropic says prompts and responses are not stored at rest after the response is returned. Eligibility depends on the feature and the organization’s configuration, so ZDR should be confirmed for the exact workload rather than assumed for every Claude request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anthropic’s Compliance API Activity Feed records administrative and resource events for API-key-authenticated workloads but does not expose prompt text or model responses through that API. That limitation does not cover a customer’s own code, reverse proxy, gateway, tracing system, or database.

Claude API Console roles separate User, Developer, Billing, and Admin capabilities. The basic User role cannot view API keys, usage logs, or billing details; higher roles receive selected management or financial access. Consequently, possessing a key is not equivalent to holding an Admin console role.

Can the key owner see billing, usage, files, or account details?

Billing and usage dashboards

Billing records and usage dashboards normally require an organization, project, billing, or cloud-console role. A key can incur charges without allowing the caller to read invoices or payment information. The person who owns the project may see aggregate usage, and an organization administrator may see more, but that is a permission decision separate from the inference request.

Files, batches, and stored resources

If a key is scoped to file, batch, vector, fine-tuning, or other resource endpoints, its caller may list, upload, retrieve, or delete those resources according to the provider’s authorization rules. A narrowly scoped generation key should not be granted these capabilities. Treat uploaded documents as potentially visible to anyone who can access the project, its logs, or the application that uploaded them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personal account and unrelated projects

A model API key does not normally unlock a user’s unrelated cloud projects, consumer chat history, email, or identity-provider account. Such access requires separate authentication and authorization. Misconfigured shared credentials or an overprivileged service account can create exceptions, which is why project isolation and least privilege are important.

How to judge privacy before using someone else’s key

  1. Identify the actual caller. Determine whether your text goes directly from your device to the provider or first to an employer’s server, plugin, proxy, or gateway.
  2. Ask what is logged. Confirm whether request bodies, responses, metadata, traces, and error payloads are stored, who can read them, and how long they remain available.
  3. Check provider controls. Review the project’s abuse-monitoring, data-sharing, request-logging, retention, and zero-retention settings for the exact provider and feature.
  4. Verify roles and scopes. Find out whether the credential can only call a model or can also access files, batches, usage data, or key-management endpoints.
  5. Assume the operator can read content. Do not send passwords, private keys, regulated records, confidential source code, or personal data unless the operator and retention policy are trusted.
  6. Separate identities. Use a dedicated project and service credential for shared or untrusted workloads instead of a personal or production-wide key.

Controls for organizations issuing shared API access

  • Use separate projects for development, production, vendors, and untrusted experiments.
  • Issue project-scoped keys with the smallest endpoint permissions needed; do not embed unrestricted secrets in browser or mobile code.
  • Redact passwords, access tokens, payment data, health information, and unnecessary personal identifiers before transmission.
  • Document every proxy, gateway, tracing agent, database, and support system that can capture request or response bodies.
  • Set an explicit retention period, restrict log readers, and audit access to prompt logs and uploaded files.
  • Review provider sharing, safety-monitoring, and zero-retention eligibility settings whenever a workload changes.
  • Rotate a key immediately after exposure, remove it from source control and client bundles, and investigate any requests made with the leaked credential.

These measures reduce accidental disclosure and limit the damage from a compromised key. They cannot make a prompt invisible to the software that must submit it or to administrators who are intentionally granted access to its records.

What to do if you already sent sensitive information

  1. Stop using the shared credential if you suspect it is exposed, and ask the project owner to rotate or revoke it.
  2. Record where the request was sent: the client, proxy, provider project, logging destination, and any backup or ticketing system.
  3. Request deletion or restricted access from the application operator where policy and law permit; provider-side deletion cannot remove copies already stored by the customer.
  4. Change any passwords, tokens, or credentials included in the prompt, because redaction after transmission does not undo exposure.
  5. For regulated or contractual data, follow your organization’s incident-response and notification procedures.

Bottom line

An AI API key authenticates requests, not universal account access. The caller and whoever operates its application can read prompts and responses. Employers and project owners may gain the same visibility through proxies, gateways, tracing, or provider logs. OpenAI documents up to 30 days of default abuse-monitoring retention and opt-in data sharing; Google supports opt-in project request/response logs and says keys do not authorize account data; Anthropic offers eligible zero-data-retention arrangements while separating prompt content from Compliance API administrative events. Treat a shared key as a shared-data path, use least-privilege project credentials, and send only information that the application operator and configured logging systems are permitted to see.
