Yes—AI systems have generated approximate reconstructions of images people were viewing while their brain activity was recorded with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The systems learn associations between one participant’s fMRI patterns and image-related features, then use a generative model to create an image. That is a narrow experimental result, not evidence of a general-purpose tool that can read arbitrary thoughts.

How does AI reconstruct an image from an fMRI scan?

fMRI measures changes in blood oxygenation associated with brain activity. In the visual-reconstruction experiments described here, a participant looked at images while researchers recorded fMRI data during a defined task. A model learned how that participant’s measured activity corresponded to image features; a generative AI model then used those predicted features to produce a reconstruction.

Brain-Diffuser, one such framework, works in two stages. First, it maps fMRI signals to a visual representation from a variational autoencoder, producing an initial image that captures broad visual properties and layout. It then predicts visual and text features and uses them to guide a latent diffusion model, Versatile Diffusion, toward a final image. The authors report that the approach can preserve overall layout and semantic information, but fine details can differ. A plausible reconstruction is not necessarily a pixel-accurate replay of the viewed image. Read the Brain-Diffuser paper.

What did the Brain-Diffuser study test?

The study used the Natural Scenes Dataset, a 7-tesla fMRI dataset in which eight participants viewed images from the COCO collection. The analysis reported by the authors focused on the four participants who completed all trials. During the protocol, participants viewed each image for three seconds and performed a recognition task.

Study detail Reported figure
Participants in the Natural Scenes Dataset 8
Participants in the completed-trial analysis 4
Training data 8,859 images and 24,980 fMRI trials
Test data 982 images and 2,770 fMRI trials
Viewing duration per image 3 seconds

These figures describe the dataset and study protocol, not an accuracy percentage. There is no single accuracy number that establishes how well all such systems can reconstruct images: results depend on the task and the evaluation metric.

How is image retrieval different from image reconstruction?

MindEye, a separate approach presented at NeurIPS 2023, includes both image retrieval and image reconstruction. It maps fMRI activity into spaces used by pretrained models. For retrieval, contrastive learning helps select the original image from a set of candidates. For reconstruction, a diffusion prior helps generate an image. Selecting a match from a database and generating a new approximation are different tasks, so a successful retrieval result should not be described as the system having independently recreated the image. Does this mean AI can read your mind?

No—not in the broad sense implied by “mind-reading.” These visual systems address images a participant actually saw under experimental conditions. They do not demonstrate unrestricted access to private thoughts, memories, dreams, or any scene a person imagines. Whether methods trained on viewed images can reconstruct imagined images remains uncertain. Scientific American’s 2023 report notes that these approaches rely on extensive, high-quality fMRI data from the individual and are limited to the task for which they were trained. Read Scientific American’s report.

Language-decoding experiments are another, separate line of work. A 2023 Nature Neuroscience study reconstructed continuous language from fMRI-derived semantic representations; it was not a demonstration that the visual image-reconstruction system decodes thoughts. The paper says that “subject cooperation is required both to train and to apply the decoder.” Read the Nature Neuroscience paper.

What does this mean for privacy?

The results are a reason to discuss privacy as brain-decoding research develops, not evidence that a covert or consumer mind-reading product exists. The demonstrated visual method depends on fMRI recordings, a defined viewing task, and substantial participant-specific data. A 2024 review cautions that “mind-reading” language can make narrow decoding experiments sound more capable than the evidence establishes. Read the 2024 review.

Shailee Jain, a computational neuroscientist at the University of Texas at Austin, told Scientific American, “I don’t think we’re mind reading.” She also said, “I think the time to think about privacy and negative uses of this technology is now, even though we may not be at the stage where that could happen.” That distinction matters: discussing possible future misuse is not the same as claiming today’s experiments can secretly reveal whatever someone is thinking.
