Not yet. AI can already detect animal sounds, identify species and individuals, classify call types, and predict which sound may come next. It cannot reliably translate an animal call into a human sentence or sustain a validated two-way conversation.

The most credible path is multimodal: combine recordings with video, movement, identity, social relationships, location and environmental conditions; use machine-learning models to find repeatable structure; then test proposed meanings with playback or other controlled behavioral experiments. That is scientific model-building, not a finished animal-language dictionary.

What AI can—and cannot—do today

Modern bioacoustic systems are already useful because they turn enormous collections of recordings into searchable, measurable data. A model can recognize that a recording contains a particular species, separate one type of call from another, count individuals, estimate life stage or produce a caption describing the sound. Those are substantial results for ecology and field research.

They are not the same as knowing what an animal intends. A classifier may label a sequence as a contact call without knowing whether it means “I am here,” “come closer,” or something that has no direct human equivalent. Prediction can reveal structure while leaving meaning unresolved.

AI output What it tells researchers What it does not establish
Species detection Which species are likely present in a recording What any call means
Call-type classification That sounds fall into repeatable acoustic categories That each category is a word with a fixed translation
Individual counting or identification Who is vocalizing and how often What the animal is communicating
Sequence prediction Which sound is statistically likely to follow That the model understands an intention or concept
Captioning A human-readable description of acoustic features A decoded sentence in the animal’s language

The practical distinction is important. Pattern recognition is ahead of translation. A reliable label can support conservation work even when semantic interpretation remains an open research problem.

How an AI animal-communication system is built

1. Collect sound with context

Researchers begin with microphones, hydrophones, tags, drones and robotic platforms suited to the habitat. Project CETI’s sperm-whale work combines non-invasive tags and other recording systems with measurements of movement, social setting and individual identity. A sound separated from its context is often ambiguous; the same vocalization can serve different functions depending on who is nearby, what happened immediately before it and whether the animal is traveling, feeding or avoiding danger.

Video, body movement, group membership, location, time and environmental data provide the additional signals needed to test those possibilities. For marine species, hydrophones can capture sounds that never reach air microphones. For terrestrial species, synchronized cameras and field observations can reveal gestures, posture or interaction partners that audio alone misses.

2. Convert recordings into learnable representations

Audio is transformed into numerical representations that preserve timing, frequency and other acoustic features. Large audio models can learn general patterns from many species and then be adapted to a particular animal or task. NatureLM-audio, described by the Earth Species Project in 2025, combines an audio encoder with a language-model interface. Its design supports transfer to species and taxonomic groups that were not present during training, known as zero-shot transfer.

3. Find recurring units and combinations

Researchers look for sounds that recur, sequences that combine in regular ways and changes associated with context. Statistical regularity is a starting point, not a translation. A model might discover that two acoustic elements often occur together or that a sequence differs when animals are in a particular social situation. Scientists then ask whether that pattern is stable across individuals, groups, locations and years.

4. Test a proposed meaning

Validation is the decisive step. If a model proposes that a call signals a predator, researchers need animals to respond consistently when that call is played in an appropriate setting, while controls produce different responses. Playback experiments, repeated observations and peer-reviewed replication can distinguish a meaningful signal from a correlation caused by background noise, recording conditions or researcher bias.

Project CETI explicitly describes a pipeline that moves from data collection and machine learning to linguistic analysis and playback validation. Until behavioral tests support an interpretation, “translation” should be treated as a hypothesis.

Project CETI and the search for sperm-whale language

Project CETI is one of the most comprehensive attempts to study a single species’ communication. Its team combines marine biology, robotics, acoustic recording, tagging, machine learning and linguistics. Sperm whales are a useful case because they are highly social, have large brains and communicate with discrete click sequences known as codas.

What the coda studies found

A 2024 study reported that sperm-whale codas vary with conversational context and can combine elements in ways that resemble phonetic or combinatorial structure. Associated reporting described more than 8,700 coda snippets analyzed and four basic components proposed as part of a “sperm whale phonetic alphabet.” The result is evidence that the signals have rich, organized structure. It is not evidence that researchers know what the sequences mean in human terms.

David Gruber, founder of the Cetacean Translation Initiative, summarized the significance cautiously: “We’re now starting to find the first building blocks of whale language.” Building blocks are not a completed lexicon. A sequence may encode information through timing, combination, identity or context in ways that do not map one-to-one onto spoken words.

Why playback matters for CETI

Recordings can show that a pattern exists, but only interaction tests can show whether animals treat it as meaningful. CETI’s stated approach is to connect sounds with whale behavior and then refine interpretations through playback and other controlled studies. That makes the project different from a system that merely generates whale-like audio: its claims are meant to be checked against the animals’ own responses.

NatureLM-audio: broad bioacoustic analysis rather than a translator

The Earth Species Project describes NatureLM-audio as an open large audio-language model for animal sounds. Its associated alp-data interface brings together more than 35 bioacoustic datasets. The documented task set includes species classification, sound detection, call-type classification, life-stage prediction, individual counting and captioning.

Cross-species transfer is particularly valuable. Field researchers rarely have balanced, labeled recordings for every animal they need to monitor. A model that can transfer acoustic knowledge to an unseen species or taxon may help identify rare animals, search archives and prioritize recordings for expert review.

Its limits are equally important. The model can produce useful labels and hypotheses without understanding whether a call refers to food, a social partner, a threat or an internal state. The Earth Species Project identifies deeper interpretation of animal communication as future work. A broad acoustic model therefore expands the measurement toolkit; it does not provide a universal animal-to-human dictionary.

Google’s DolphinGemma and predictive vocal modeling

In 2025, Google announced DolphinGemma with Georgia Tech and the Wild Dolphin Project. The model was trained on a long-running acoustic database of wild Atlantic spotted dolphins. Google describes it as an audio-in/audio-out system that learns vocal structure, predicts a likely subsequent sound and generates novel dolphin-like sequences.

The project also discusses experiments with running models and microphone functions on a phone. That could make field exploration more portable, but it does not turn a phone into a validated dolphin translator. Predicting the next sound is analogous to learning the statistical rhythm of a sequence: it demonstrates regularity, not semantic comprehension. A generated sequence may be acoustically plausible while conveying nothing to a dolphin.

To establish communication, researchers would need to show that dolphins respond reliably to generated or replayed sounds in a context-specific way, and that those responses can be reproduced with different animals and controls. The announcement presents DolphinGemma as a research tool for studying structure and testing interactions, not as a consumer conversation product.

Why human-style translation is so difficult

There is no parallel corpus

Human machine translation benefits from parallel examples: the same content appears in two known languages, aligned sentence by sentence. Animal researchers generally have no equivalent dataset. They do not know in advance which sound corresponds to which concept, whether a sound expresses a proposition at all, or whether the relevant message is distributed across sound, movement, chemistry and touch.

Meaning may depend on social and environmental context

A call can change function with the caller’s identity, the recipient, distance, group composition, season or immediate event. Two acoustically similar signals may have different effects in different situations. Conversely, the same social outcome may be achieved through several modalities. An audio-only model can mistake a contextual correlation for a stable meaning.

Data are sparse and uneven

Some species have decades of recordings; others are rarely detected and have little labeled data. Recordings may overrepresent one population, season, age group or researcher’s equipment. A model trained on that narrow sample can appear accurate while failing in another habitat or social group.

Animals may not use word-like units

Human language is only one possible communication architecture. Animals could encode information through continuous variation, timing, combinations, caller identity or multimodal displays. Discovering discrete units does not prove that those units correspond to nouns, verbs or sentences. The appropriate scientific question is what information the signal carries and how receivers use it, not whether every call can be assigned an English word.

What AI can deliver before conversation exists

  • Biodiversity monitoring: Automatically scan long recordings for species that are difficult to observe directly.
  • Endangered-species surveys: Detect rare vocalizations across large areas and identify promising sites for field teams.
  • Population and activity estimates: Count individuals or vocal events more consistently than manual review alone.
  • Behavior studies: Compare call patterns with social interactions, movement and habitat conditions.
  • Welfare research: Look for acoustic patterns associated with stress or distress, followed by veterinary and behavioral validation.
  • Data triage: Help scientists find unusual or informative segments in enormous audio archives.

These applications can have immediate conservation value. They do not depend on a future breakthrough that maps animal communication neatly onto human sentences.

Question What to look for Warning sign
Species scope A clearly named species, population and habitat, or evidence for cross-species transfer Claims about “animals” in general with no species boundary
Input data Audio linked to behavior, identity, environment and time Short, unlabeled clips with no context
Output Explicit distinction between classification, prediction and semantic interpretation Human words presented without explaining how meanings were established
Validation Playback, controlled interaction, behavioral response and replication Only correlation, visualizations or convincing generated sounds
Openness Published methods, datasets or evaluation details that others can inspect Unverifiable accuracy claims from a closed system

For recording equipment, match the device to the habitat. Compare microphone or hydrophone suitability, frequency range, weatherproofing, battery life and storage. A portable wildlife recorder or underwater hydrophone can support learning and citizen-science projects, but consumer equipment cannot replace calibrated arrays, tagging protocols, deployment expertise or animal-welfare procedures used in major research programs.

A responsible way to explore animal sounds yourself

  1. Choose one species and setting. Do not begin with a general claim about animal language. Define the habitat, season and target behavior.
  2. Record metadata with every clip. Note date, time, location, weather, recorder settings, visible animals and what they were doing.
  3. Minimize disturbance. Keep distance, follow local wildlife rules and never alter feeding, breeding or travel behavior to obtain a recording.
  4. Use software for organization first. Label species, call type and context only when you have a defensible basis; treat automated labels as suggestions for review.
  5. Compare repeated cases. Look for patterns across individuals and situations rather than interpreting a memorable single clip.
  6. Separate hypothesis from finding. If a sound appears associated with an event, describe it as a candidate association until independent observations or playback tests support it.

Will we ever hold a real conversation with whales, dolphins or pets?

No reliable published timetable establishes when a general human-animal conversation system will exist. Progress is more likely to arrive species by species and task by task. A system might first identify a dolphin’s social partner, detect a whale’s group-specific call pattern or flag a dog’s distress-related behavior without producing a literal sentence.

Whales and dolphins are especially challenging because their communication is often underwater, socially complex and potentially multimodal. Dogs and other domestic animals offer more opportunities for synchronized video and long-term observation, but that does not guarantee that their vocalizations form a human-like language. In every case, the standard should be behavioral evidence: animals must respond consistently to a proposed signal in the situations where the model says it should matter.

AI is therefore making animal communication more measurable, searchable and testable. NatureLM-audio shows how broad acoustic models can support practical bioacoustics; DolphinGemma shows how sequence prediction can reveal structure; and Project CETI demonstrates the need to connect models with context and playback. The semantic bridge to dependable human-animal conversation remains unbuilt.
