Yes—some AI devices work without internet access, but only when the model and the feature run on the device itself. Local AI can process prompts and data with Wi‑Fi and mobile data disabled. Cloud search, live information, vendor servers, online accounts and actions such as web lookup or messaging still require a connection. A smartphone is a common host for consumer AI, not a universal requirement: local models can also run on tablets, laptops, robots and other edge hardware.

What “offline AI” actually means

An AI device is offline when the computation needed for a particular task happens on its own processor, memory and storage rather than on a remote server. Android Developers describes this as on-device inference: prompts and data are processed directly on the hardware. Its Gemini Nano documentation says the model can provide generative-AI experiences without a network connection or sending data to the cloud, and that AICore—the Android system service that hosts the model—does not have direct internet access.

That definition applies to a feature, not automatically to the entire product. A device may contain a local model for writing or classification while using the internet for search, maps, account synchronization, updates, speech services or an action requested by the user. “Works offline” therefore means “these supported functions continue to work when the connection is unavailable,” not “every button works in airplane mode.”

What an offline AI assistant can and cannot do

Local models are most useful when the input is already on the device and the answer does not depend on changing outside information. The exact functions vary by model, operating system and app, so treat these as categories to verify rather than a promise that every device supports each one.

Task or capability Can it work offline? Why
Rewrite, summarize or extract information from text stored on the device Often, if the app exposes a compatible local model The model can read the supplied text without contacting a server.
Draft text from a prompt and local context Often, within the model’s token and hardware limits Generation is performed locally; long prompts may exceed available capacity.
Classify or transform on-device content Often, where the operating system provides that feature These are bounded tasks suited to a small model.
Answer questions requiring current news, prices or websites No A fully offline model cannot retrieve changing web content.
Web search, maps, weather or other live services No The service needs a network connection and usually a remote provider.
Send a message, make an online booking or change a cloud account No The requested action must reach the relevant service.
Use a vendor’s remote assistant or cloud-only model No The prompt has to be sent to the vendor’s servers.

An offline answer can also be out of date. Local inference does not magically supply events, software changes or facts that occurred after the model was trained. If a task needs both privacy and current information, a hybrid design can keep simple processing local and use the cloud only when the user permits it.

Do you need a smartphone?

No, not for local inference in general. A smartphone is simply one possible host. Google DeepMind describes its Gemma 3n model as “privacy-first, offline-ready” and says it can run locally on phones, tablets and laptops. Other edge hardware, including embedded computers and robots, can also host an appropriately sized model.

However, many consumer “AI gadgets” are designed around a phone or an online account. The phone may provide the display, microphone, setup process, cellular data, authentication or companion app, while the product itself sends requests to a vendor’s servers. Removing the phone from that arrangement can remove the product’s main interface even if the gadget has some local processing.

Google’s Gemini assistant product information states that an internet connection, an Android device and setup are required for that assistant experience. That requirement describes the product experience as a whole; it does not mean every on-device model requires a phone or a connection. Check the documentation for the exact model, app and feature you intend to use.

How on-device AI works

1. The model is stored on the device

A local model must be downloaded into device storage, either by the operating system, an app or a developer tool. The first installation normally needs internet access, as can later model updates, license checks or account authentication. Once installed, the model files and the runtime can remain available in airplane mode.

2. A hardware-accelerated runtime executes the prompt

The operating system loads the model into memory and uses available CPU, GPU or neural-processing hardware. Android’s Gemini Nano features are delivered through AICore. Hardware acceleration can reduce latency and battery use, but support differs by device. A model that runs acceptably on a recent high-end phone may be too slow, memory-hungry or unsupported on an older handset.

3. The app decides whether to stay local or escalate

Some applications use a local model for short, private or routine requests and a cloud model for larger or more demanding work. Android documentation recommends hybrid inference when a task exceeds local capacity. The escalation policy matters: an app should make clear when data leaves the device and should provide a way to remain local when that is a requirement.

What limits offline models?

  • Token and context limits: A local model may accept less text in one request than a cloud model. Large documents can be truncated or rejected.
  • Model capability: Small models generally have less breadth and reasoning capacity than a remote, larger model. Supported languages, images, audio and other modalities depend on the specific release.
  • Memory and storage: The model, runtime and application compete for RAM and disk space. Insufficient memory can cause slowdowns, failures or app termination.
  • Battery and heat: Sustained generation keeps the processor busy and can drain the battery or trigger thermal throttling.
  • Latency: A short request may feel immediate, while a long response can take time because every token is generated on local hardware.
  • No live knowledge: Without connectivity, the model cannot browse, verify a current fact or call a remote database.
  • Feature gating: A phone may advertise on-device AI while a particular assistant command still requires the cloud, a supported region, a language pack or a newer software version.

Example: Android phones and Gemini Nano

Gemini Nano is Google’s documented example of an on-device model for Android. Google says it enables rich generative-AI experiences without a network connection or sending data to the cloud. Android Developers also notes that local functionality remains reliable with spotty or no internet for supported features.

Those statements do not make every Gemini feature offline. The documentation lists model token limits, hardware limits and capability boundaries, and recommends hybrid inference for requests that exceed local capacity. A local feature may therefore continue in airplane mode while a separate assistant command opens a network error.

Google identifies Pixel 9 and later as Gemini-enabled phones. Availability and offline behavior still depend on the software build, hardware, region, language and the individual feature. “Android phone with on-device AI” is a useful category when comparing devices, but the label is not a guarantee that all Gemini functions work offline.

How to check whether a device will work offline

  1. List the exact tasks. Separate local jobs such as rewriting a saved note from online jobs such as searching the web or sending a message. A device can be suitable for the first list and unsuitable for the second.
  2. Read the feature-level requirements. Look for wording such as “on-device,” “offline,” “local processing” or “requires an internet connection.” Do not rely on a product’s general AI branding.
  3. Confirm the host hardware and software. Check the model, operating-system version, supported languages, RAM and available storage. Verify that the manufacturer names your exact device, not merely the product family.
  4. Complete setup while connected. Download the model, install the app, sign in if required and apply updates before you leave coverage. Some devices need periodic online checks.
  5. Test in airplane mode. Turn off Wi‑Fi and mobile data, then run each important function. Record which features continue, which display an offline message and which silently switch to a different mode.
  6. Check data handling. Review whether prompts, attachments, logs or telemetry are retained locally or uploaded when a connection returns. Local inference reduces exposure but does not automatically eliminate every form of syncing.
  7. Measure practical limits. Try the longest document, largest attachment and longest session you expect to use. Watch for truncation, slow responses, crashes, battery drain and heat.

Privacy, security and reliability trade-offs

Keeping a prompt on the device can reduce the chance that its contents are transmitted to a provider. It also helps when connectivity is unreliable, such as during travel or in locations with poor coverage. Nevertheless, local storage can still be exposed if the device is unlocked, backed up, infected with malware or shared with another user. Check the app’s logging and backup settings rather than assuming “offline” means “private.”

Cloud models offer broader knowledge, larger context windows and access to live services, but require trust in the provider and a working connection. A hybrid system can provide a practical compromise: keep routine text processing local, then ask for explicit consent before sending a request to a cloud model. If the app offers no clear indicator or control, you cannot reliably tell which path a prompt took.

Common failure modes and fixes

The model worked during setup but not in airplane mode

The app may have been using a cloud model, or the local model download may not have completed. Reconnect, finish installation and look for an explicit on-device or offline setting. Then repeat the airplane-mode test.

Only short prompts work

You may have reached the local model’s token or memory limit. Shorten the prompt, process a document in sections or use a supported hybrid mode when a connection is available.

The assistant answers but cannot perform an action

Generation and action execution are separate. A local model can compose an answer while sending a message, checking a calendar or retrieving a web result still requires the relevant online service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance falls after several requests

Heat, battery-saving mode or memory pressure can reduce speed. Stop other demanding apps, allow the device to cool, connect to power and use a smaller or shorter request if the software provides that option.

A product has a local model but still demands a phone

The phone may be required for setup, authentication, controls or the vendor’s cloud connection. Look for a documented standalone mode and test the product without the companion app before relying on it away from a phone.

Choosing between local, cloud and hybrid AI

Priority Best fit Reason
Private processing of short, known inputs Local model Data can remain on the device and continue without coverage.
Current information and online actions Cloud-connected assistant Search, accounts and live services need network access.
Intermittent connectivity with occasional complex requests Hybrid system Routine work stays local while larger tasks can use the cloud when available.
Use without any phone Standalone device with documented local controls Verify that setup, updates and essential functions do not depend on a companion handset.

Before buying, compare seven items: local versus cloud processing; whether a connection or phone is required; privacy and data handling; latency; battery, memory and thermal limits; model quality and supported modalities; and access to live services such as web search, maps, accounts and messaging. A device that scores well on offline privacy may deliberately score poorly on current information, and that is a design trade-off rather than a defect.

Bottom line for common use cases

  • Writing or summarizing saved material: A compatible on-device model can often handle this without Wi‑Fi or mobile data.
  • Travel with no coverage: Download and test the model before departure; expect local answers but not current directions, bookings or web results.
  • Strict confidentiality: Prefer a documented local mode, disable optional syncing and verify behavior with the network disabled.
  • A phone-free AI gadget: Choose only a product that documents standalone setup, local processing and offline operation for the functions you need.
  • Research requiring current facts: Use a connected system and treat a fully offline model as unable to verify changing information.
