Not as a practical encoder setup: plan to send YouTube both audio and a video signal. For a radio-style broadcast, that video can be a still image or a simple visualizer; it does not need to be footage of a person or a live camera. YouTube’s encoder settings specify video alongside audio, but its cited guidance does not explicitly say that it categorically rejects every audio-only payload.

What “without video” means for a radio stream

A YouTube radio livestream can be audio-led, but the reliable production approach is to pair its sound with a visual signal. Use a static image—such as program artwork—or a visualizer while the audio plays. The image or animation is still video as far as the encoder output is concerned; this is not a special YouTube audio-only mode.

YouTube’s encoder documentation lists supported video codecs and frame rates as well as audio codecs and settings. It is safest to configure both rather than assume an audio-only stream will work. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set up a radio-style livestream with a still image

  1. Confirm livestream access. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. Check YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility requirements and encoder setup guidance.
  2. Create or schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio and open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
  3. Configure an encoder. Use software or hardware that can send a continuous video-and-audio feed to YouTube. Set the encoder’s server URL and stream key, choose a static image or visualizer as its video source, and connect the radio audio source. YouTube describes encoders as converting video to a digital format for streaming; see its encoder overview.
  4. Use compatible output settings. YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It lists AAC or MP3 audio and constant-bitrate encoding. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Check the official settings page before publishing, since supported settings can change.
  5. Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Select it in the encoder if supported and use the matching server address provided by YouTube.
  6. Test before the broadcast. Send a private or unlisted test with representative audio and the same still image or motion you plan to use. Check the Live Control Room preview, listen for clean audio, and monitor stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video and monitoring quality; see its encoder settings guidance and livestreaming tips.
  7. Start the public broadcast only after the preview is ready. Confirm the correct stream key and destination, then monitor audio and video throughout the show.

Choose a still image or visualizer

Still image

A still image is the simplest choice for continuous radio: it provides the required visual signal without a camera or animated scene. Make sure the image is yours or that you have permission to use it, including any artwork or logos it contains.

Visualizer

A visualizer adds motion while keeping the production audio-focused. It can make the broadcast look more active, but it introduces another element to test: confirm the encoder keeps producing video and that the visualizer does not obscure text or display material you are not authorized to use.

Copyright applies to the audio

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. If it identifies such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image; if the identified content continues, it may temporarily interrupt or terminate the livestream. Having a license does not always prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may also need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm you have the necessary rights for all music, recordings, and other audio before broadcasting. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright enforcement.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No preview or stream detected: Check that the encoder is sending both video and audio, and verify the server URL and stream key against the current YouTube stream. A key from another broadcast may send to the wrong destination.
  • Audio plays but the picture is missing: Make sure the still image or visualizer is selected as the encoder’s video source and that the encoder is actively outputting video, not audio alone.
  • Stream health warnings or unstable output: Check the encoder’s connection and output settings, use the recommended RTMPS route where available, and run another test before going live. Watch the health messages in Live Control Room.
  • Audio sounds distorted or is out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio source and encoding settings. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; test the actual program audio rather than relying on a silent or unrelated test feed.
  • The stream is interrupted after music starts: Review the audio for third-party content and confirm permissions. If you are licensed, check with the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
  • Livestreaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and check for restrictions. If this is the channel’s first livestream activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
