Yes. YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. It may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A separate valid copyright removal request can remove the stream and give the channel a copyright strike. Repeating a trailer does not, by itself, establish permission or fair use.

What YouTube may do while the stream is live

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may warn you and replace the live video with a placeholder image. If the content continues, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Addressing the warning by stopping or removing the identified material can allow the stream to continue. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

That live interruption is not automatically the same as a copyright strike. The outcome depends on what YouTube identifies and whether a copyright removal request is made and found valid.

Content ID claims, live interruptions, and strikes are different

  • Live matching or interruption: YouTube may act during the broadcast under its live-stream scanning policy.
  • Content ID claim on an archive: If you choose to archive the livestream, YouTube says a Content ID claim on that archived video is made after the stream ends. A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike.
  • Copyright removal request: This is a legal request from a copyright owner or authorized representative. If YouTube finds it valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. YouTube says an active livestream removed for copyright results in a strike and a live-streaming restriction.

Check the notice in YouTube Studio rather than treating every warning, claim, interruption, or removal as the same event. YouTube explains the distinction in its guidance on copyright strikes and copyright removal requests.

Does looping a trailer count as fair use?

Not automatically. Repeating a trailer without commentary or other new expression does not, on its own, establish fair use; that is a practical inference, not a ruling about every trailer loop. In the United States, fair use is assessed case by case using four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the potential market. YouTube says courts decide fair-use cases and automated Content ID matching cannot determine whether a use is fair.

Other countries may use different copyright exceptions or fair-dealing rules, sometimes limited to purposes such as quotation, criticism, review, parody, or pastiche. The relevant country, actual use, rights, and license all matter. YouTube’s overview is Fair use on YouTube.

What permission would need to cover

The trailer’s title alone does not show who controls its rights or whether a particular license covers your stream. Confirm that permission covers livestreaming, the territories where the stream is available, the duration, and all elements used in the trailer. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption: YouTube advises licensed creators to contact the rights holder to have their channel added to the Content ID allowlist.

YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance says reference material must be content for which the owner controls exclusive rights and notes that trailers may not be exclusive to an individual. That concerns eligibility to provide Content ID reference material; it does not mean trailers are uncopyrighted or free for anyone to use.

Broken Trail

Ritter and Harte's attempts to care for the girls are complicated by their responsibility to deliver a herd of horses while avoiding a group of bitter rivals intent on kidnapping the girls for their own purposes.

What to do if you plan to stream or receive a notice

Before going live

  • Do not run the trailer loop unless you have the necessary rights or a well-supported copyright exception for the actual use and jurisdiction.
  • If you have a license, verify its scope and ask the relevant rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID.

If a warning appears or the stream stops

  1. Stop or remove the identified trailer content if a live warning appears; YouTube says addressing the issue may allow the stream to continue.
  2. If the stream ends, inspect YouTube Studio and the notice to determine whether it was a live interruption, an archived-video claim, or a copyright removal request.
  3. If you receive a scheduled removal request, read its stated deadline promptly. YouTube says the scheduled request gives the uploader seven days to act before removal and a strike take effect. The described options include deleting the content during that period or seeking a retraction.
  4. Use a counter notification only if you have a good-faith basis to believe the removal was mistaken or the use qualifies for an exception. YouTube describes this as an option after removal takes effect and the strike is applied.

See YouTube’s removal-request guidance for the process and available responses.

What a copyright strike can mean for the channel

YouTube says a strike may expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School. Three active copyright strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination. If an active livestream is removed for copyright, YouTube says live-streaming access is restricted for seven days; a further strike can extend the restriction to 14 days. These are platform policy periods, not estimates of how likely a particular trailer loop is to be detected.

YouTube’s current strike guidance is at Understand copyright strikes.
