Yes. YouTube scans live streams for copyrighted-content matches, including game soundtracks. A match may trigger a warning, a placeholder image, a temporary interruption, or termination if the content continues. If you archive the stream, a separate Content ID claim may be made after the broadcast ends. Repeating a track does not give you permission to use it.
What can happen while the stream is live?
YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects copyrighted music, it may warn you and replace the stream with a placeholder image. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. You do not need to wait for a claim on the replay before a live broadcast can be interrupted. YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance describes these possible outcomes.
Can the saved replay get a Content ID claim?
Yes. If you choose to archive a live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream is complete. That later claim is separate from any live warning or interruption. The outcome depends on the rights involved, YouTube’s matching and enforcement, the rights holder’s settings, and territory.
Does a Content ID claim mean a copyright strike?
No. A Content ID claim and a copyright takedown are different. Depending on the rights holder’s policy, a claim may monetize, track, or block the video, and policies can vary by territory. Claims generally affect the video rather than the channel. A takedown removes content and can result in a copyright strike; a claim alone does not automatically mean a strike. See YouTube’s Content ID claim guidance and copyright strike guidance.

Does it matter whether the music is original to the game?
Original game soundtrack
YouTube defines an original video game soundtrack as music made specifically for a game, such as its original score or background music. YouTube says an original game soundtrack is a valid Content ID reference only when it is owned by the game publisher and delivered under that publisher’s content owner. This rule describes who can submit the music as a Content ID reference; it does not grant streamers permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance explains the reference requirement.
Music licensed into the game
A song included in a game under a separate license is not necessarily covered by the original-soundtrack rule. “It came from a game” does not establish that the publisher owns the recording or that the license covers your broadcast. Check the game’s policy and, where relevant, the track’s separate rights and terms.

What permissions should you check before going live?
- Identify the exact material. Note the game and track, and determine whether it is an original score or music licensed from another artist or label.
- Read the publisher’s current policy. Check whether it permits your intended use, especially continuous music-only streams, monetization, and saved VODs. YouTube says monetization of game content depends on commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. Its guidance also cautions that extended gameplay may not be accepted for monetization without appropriate rights. YouTube’s video game and software monetization guidance covers these conditions.
- Check any separate music license. Confirm that it covers livestreaming and archived replays, the territories where viewers may watch, and your specific channel. Permission to use music in a game or in a personal copy does not itself establish those permissions.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. If you have a license, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist where needed. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. Its live-stream guidance addresses this issue.
- Remove uncertain music. If you cannot establish the necessary rights, mute or replace the soundtrack. YouTube points creators to the Audio Library and Creator Music as possible sources, subject to their terms.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on providers to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. The terms apply under the agreements listed on that page; they are not a complete statement of copyright law in every jurisdiction.
What if a claim or interruption happens?
- During the broadcast: If YouTube warns you or substitutes a placeholder, stop using the matched content. Continuing with it may lead to an interruption or termination.
- After the broadcast: Open the notice and check the claimant, matched segment, policy, and territories. Confirm whether it is a Content ID claim or a takedown.
- Before disputing: Dispute only if you have a supportable basis, such as the necessary rights, a valid copyright exception, or a genuine misidentification. YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond to a dispute. Credit, owning a copy, or labeling music “free” is not by itself a valid reason to dispute. YouTube’s dispute guidance explains the process.
Will music-only game streams be monetized?
Not automatically. YouTube’s game-content monetization guidance ties eligibility to the commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. It says step-by-step commentary should be closely tied to the live action and provide instructional or educational value; simply showing gameplay or using software for an extended time may not be accepted without appropriate rights. This is separate from whether the soundtrack is copyrighted, and it does not guarantee that a particular channel will qualify for monetization. Check YouTube’s current monetization guidance and the publisher’s terms for the game.
