Yes—but only if the laptop stays awake, the encoder keeps sending video to YouTube, and the network remains connected. Closing the lid does not keep a stream alive by itself. Many laptops sleep when closed, which can stop the encoder feed. Check your operating system’s lid settings, test the complete setup, and monitor the stream before relying on it unattended.
What has to keep running
A YouTube Live encoder stream depends on a working feed from the encoder, connected to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key. If the computer sleeps or the encoder stops sending video, closing the lid will not preserve the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how the encoder connects to the service and notes that stopping the encoder feed ends the stream.
Also distinguish a livestream loop from looping a video on a YouTube watch page: repeating playback in a browser does not itself create an encoder livestream. The encoder must send the video feed.
Keep a Windows laptop awake when the lid closes
- Open Control Panel, then go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- For When I close the lid, choose an action that keeps the PC awake for the Plugged in setting, if your device offers that option. Review the On battery setting separately.
- Save the change, keep the laptop connected to power for a long stream, and run a test with the lid closed. Confirm the encoder remains connected and the YouTube stream continues to receive video.
Microsoft says many PCs—especially laptops and tablets—sleep when the lid closes. Available power options can vary by hardware and manufacturer. See Microsoft’s sleep and lid guidance.

Use a Mac with its lid closed
Apple’s guidance for closed-display Mac use calls for an external display, mouse, and keyboard. Apple silicon may prompt you to authorize accessories. Requirements can differ by model and macOS version, so check Apple’s instructions for your exact Mac rather than assuming every laptop supports the same setup.

- If you have an M3 MacBook Air or MacBook Pro and want to use the specific dual-display workflow, check Apple’s M3 MacBook display guidance for its supported macOS versions, external input devices, and power requirements.
- Connect the required display and input devices, authorize accessories if prompted, and connect power as required for your model.
- Start the encoder and test the YouTube feed with the lid closed before depending on it.
A compatible USB-C dock may simplify connecting a display and accessories, but check compatibility with your Mac. A dock does not, by itself, establish that a particular model supports closed-display use.

Test the complete setup before a long stream
Test in the same configuration you plan to use: lid closed, power connected, network in place, and encoder sending the intended video. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring streams. Its live streaming tips say to continuously monitor audio and video quality.
- Confirm the encoder is connected and YouTube shows an incoming preview.
- Close the lid and verify that the encoder remains active and the feed continues.
- Check audio and video quality, and confirm the event is accessible on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- If you record a local archive, check that it is growing as expected.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a laptop, encoder, power supply, or network will keep working for that long. YouTube also advises setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start; treat those as preparation guidance, not reliability promises. Choose an approach for unattended streaming

Troubleshoot a stream that stops after closing the lid
- The YouTube feed disappears: Check whether the laptop slept, the encoder stopped, or the network disconnected. Verify the lid-close action and encoder connection, then test again with the lid closed.
- The encoder still runs but YouTube receives no video: Check the encoder’s connection status, stream URL and key, and network connection. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the feed connection.
- The Mac display or accessories do not work as expected: Recheck the closed-display requirements for your exact model and macOS version, including accessory authorization. Do not assume that connecting a dock alone is sufficient.
- The stream is unstable over Wi-Fi: YouTube says a wired connection may help compared with Wi-Fi. Test the wired setup; it will not address sleep or encoder faults.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Check the preview, audio and video quality, event accessibility, and any local archive while testing. YouTube recommends monitoring quality during the stream.
