Yes. You send YouTube one live feed at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you choose; YouTube automatically transcodes it into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and connections. That does not guarantee every viewer will see the same resolution choices—or a fixed menu such as 1080p, 720p, and lower options.

For a prerecorded gaming rerun, play the video through an encoder and send that encoded feed to YouTube Live. YouTube documents encoder streaming for gameplay, but does not describe a special rerun mode.

What “different resolutions” means on a live rerun

Your encoder sends one incoming stream. You choose its output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube then transcodes the stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Those are two separate stages: your output settings govern the feed you send, while YouTube handles viewer playback formats. YouTube describes “many different output formats,” not a guaranteed set of selectable resolutions for every broadcast. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

So if your question is, “Can I stream a prerecorded gaming video at one resolution and let viewers choose another?”—yes, YouTube’s transcoding can provide alternate playback formats. Check the actual player during your stream if a particular resolution option matters.

How to send a prerecorded gaming video as a live stream

The practical setup is to play the recording on a computer and route its video and audio through a live encoder, which sends the feed to YouTube. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as an option for gameplay and screen sharing; the precise controls vary by encoder. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.

  1. Prepare the recording. Check its native resolution and frame rate, and confirm that you have the rights to use the game footage, music, and other included material. A larger encoder output does not restore detail absent from lower-resolution source footage.
  2. Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and retrieve its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Enter it in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings.
  3. Set the encoder output. Choose a resolution and frame rate suited to the recording and your upload connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval in its encoder settings guidance. Its recommended bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate, so use the current table on the official settings page rather than assuming one bitrate fits all.
  4. Test and check stream health. Run a test under conditions like the planned broadcast, then review YouTube’s stream-health indicators before making the stream public. A setting that exceeds the stability of your connection can cause buffering or dropped frames.
  5. Start playback and go live. Start the recording in the encoder workflow and confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Once live, inspect playback options in the actual player; do not promise a fixed set of viewer resolutions.

Choose settings for the footage and connection

  • Resolution: Use the recording’s native resolution when possible. Raising the encoder output above the source does not add genuine image detail.
  • Frame rate: Match the game’s recording where practical. The higher the resolution and frame rate, the more upload capacity the encoder settings may require.
  • Bitrate: Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then test for a stable connection. Do not choose a bitrate solely because it is the highest available.
  • Keyframes and rate control: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and CBR for live encoder output. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the applicable settings and bitrate table.
  • Latency: YouTube says 2160p streams do not have the “improve for low latency” option and use normal latency. That is relevant if you plan a 4K rerun and expect low-latency controls.

Replay retention and long reruns

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and says 1440p and 2160p streams are also automatically archived. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Because a long-running rerun can outlast that threshold, keep a local recording or backup and verify what remains in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

A rerun is still a YouTube broadcast. Before streaming, confirm that the gameplay, soundtrack, overlays, and any other material are cleared for your use. A recording being yours does not by itself establish rights to music or other third-party material included in it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your content; this resolution workflow does not grant rights or guarantee monetization.

Common problems and fixes

  • Viewers do not see the resolution you expected: YouTube confirms multiple output formats but does not promise an identical resolution menu for every stream. Check the live player and avoid advertising a particular playback ladder as guaranteed.
  • The stream buffers or drops frames: The outgoing bitrate may exceed the stable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Lower the output settings to a reliable level and repeat the test under broadcast-like conditions.
  • The stream does not appear in YouTube: Check that the correct stream key is entered, the stream is set up in Studio, and the encoder is actually sending. If you suspect the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • The archive is missing or incomplete: Check stream duration and resolution, then inspect Studio. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; keep a local backup for long reruns.
  • The picture looks no sharper than the source: Confirm the recording’s native resolution. Encoding at a higher output setting cannot recreate detail that was not in the original footage.
