Yes. Fewer than 1,000 subscribers does not automatically prevent a channel from livestreaming. The rules depend on how you go live: YouTube’s mobile app requires at least 50 subscribers, while its guidance lists webcam and encoder streaming as options without specifying a subscriber minimum for those methods. The 1,000-subscriber figure mainly matters to mobile streams, where audience limits and private-by-default archives may apply.
Which livestream methods can you use?
| Method | Subscriber guidance | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile app | At least 50 subscribers | Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limited audience, and their livestream archives may be private by default. You also need a supported mobile device and an eligible channel. YouTube’s mobile livestream guidance |
| Webcam on a computer | No exact minimum stated in YouTube’s general guide | YouTube lists webcam streaming as an option; a computer with a webcam is needed. If access is unavailable, check YouTube Studio. YouTube’s livestream guide |
| Encoder on a computer | No exact minimum stated in YouTube’s general guide | YouTube lists encoder streaming for setups such as gameplay, overlays, or external equipment. Check Studio for access. YouTube’s livestream guide |
| Console | No exact minimum stated in YouTube’s general guide | YouTube lists console streaming and directs creators to console-maker instructions. YouTube’s livestream guide |
YouTube does not state an exact subscriber minimum for webcam, encoder, or console streaming on the general guide cited here. Do not assume the mobile app’s 50-subscriber threshold applies to those methods; check your channel’s access in Studio.
Requirements that apply to going live
- Verify your channel. YouTube says a verified channel is required for livestreaming; phone verification unlocks the feature. Verify your YouTube account
- Have no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. This is part of YouTube’s general eligibility guidance. YouTube’s livestream guide
- Be at least 16 years old. YouTube sets this minimum age for livestreaming. Your stream must also follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube’s livestream guide
- For mobile streaming, meet the additional mobile conditions. You need at least 50 subscribers and a supported device; YouTube lists Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ in its mobile guidance. YouTube’s mobile livestream guidance
How to check access and start a livestream
- Verify the channel: complete phone verification in YouTube’s account verification flow. YouTube account verification
- Check feature access: open YouTube Studio and review whether livestreaming is available for your channel. YouTube’s general guide lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as streaming methods. YouTube’s livestream guide
- Choose a method: use the mobile app only if the channel meets its 50-subscriber threshold and device requirements; otherwise, check Studio for the computer or console options available to your channel.
- If enabling mobile livestreaming for the first time, wait for activation: YouTube says this can take up to 24 hours. Then start the stream from the mobile app. YouTube’s mobile livestream guidance
What changes below 1,000 subscribers?
The under-1,000 caveat is about the mobile experience, not a universal ban on livestreaming. For mobile channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the audience and set saved livestreams to private by default. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, YouTube says it may take weeks for those limits to update. YouTube’s mobile livestream FAQ
If livestreaming is unavailable
- Not verified: complete phone verification, then check access again in YouTube Studio. YouTube account verification
- Recently restricted: check whether the channel has had a livestream restriction in the last 90 days. YouTube says this prevents livestreaming during the relevant eligibility period. YouTube’s livestream guide
- Mobile subscriber count below 50: the mobile app’s listed threshold is at least 50 subscribers. Check Studio for other methods rather than treating this mobile threshold as a rule for every method. YouTube’s mobile livestream guidance
- First mobile stream not enabled yet: allow up to 24 hours after turning on livestreaming. YouTube’s mobile livestream guidance
- Trying another channel to get around an active restriction: do not do this. YouTube prohibits using another channel to circumvent an active livestream restriction. YouTube’s livestream guide
