Yes. A YouTube channel with 50 subscribers can stream prerecorded video from a computer using a live-stream encoder, as long as live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile live streaming; its computer encoder guidance does not state a subscriber minimum. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Why 50 subscribers is not a barrier on a computer
YouTube’s stated 50-subscriber threshold is for mobile live streaming, not computer streaming. For live streaming generally, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. On a computer, you can use YouTube’s webcam method or an encoder; an encoder is the relevant option for sending prerecorded video.
Your channel’s individual eligibility or restriction status cannot be determined from those general requirements. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
Stream a prerecorded video from a computer
- Confirm eligibility and activation. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Confirm that live streaming is available for your channel. If you have not streamed before, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Choose an encoder. Use a computer software encoder that can send a video source to YouTube, or compatible hardware if your production specifically needs it. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary; a software encoder is a computer app. For prerecorded media, confirm that the encoder supports playing and sending a file as a live stream.
- Create or select the stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select one you have already set up.
- Connect the encoder. Select YouTube in the encoder if that connection option is available. Otherwise, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the encoder’s stream settings. Keep the stream key private: treat it like a password.
- Check the video and sound. Start the encoder’s feed and check the Live Control Room preview. Test audio and video before going live, then monitor stream quality. A test stream is useful for catching problems before viewers see them.
- Start the live stream. When the preview and audio are correct, start the broadcast using the controls in your encoder and Live Control Room workflow. Confirm in Live Control Room that the stream is live.
Encoder settings and quality checks
The exact controls and labels depend on the encoder you choose. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream quality settings, but the available information here does not establish specific bitrate, resolution, or keyframe values for your particular encoder, file, and connection. Use the encoder’s YouTube-compatible settings guidance rather than guessing at numbers.

- Make sure the selected video source is the prerecorded file you intend to broadcast.
- Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and using the matching stream key from the selected Studio stream.
- Review the Live Control Room preview and verify both picture and audio before starting the public broadcast.
- Monitor stream quality while live; if the output is unstable, use the encoder’s quality controls and test again before relying on the setup.
Copyright and channel rules still apply
A prerecorded file is still subject to YouTube’s live-stream rules. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material, and may interrupt or terminate a stream. Use video and audio you own or have permission to use in a live broadcast. Even when you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to proceed without a claim-related interruption.
