Yes. Your source videos can be 1080p while your encoder sends YouTube a 720p live stream. Set the outgoing resolution to 1280×720 and have your encoder or streaming service scale the 1920×1080 footage down before sending it. YouTube supports 720p live ingestion; that does not, by itself, establish whether one stream can remain live continuously for 24 hours a day.
How can 1080p videos become a 720p live stream?
The resolution of a video file and the resolution sent to YouTube are separate. A 1080p file is 1920×1080 pixels; a 720p output is 1280×720. The encoder or service that plays and broadcasts the file scales the picture to the selected output resolution. YouTube receives that 720p feed, then transcodes it into multiple formats for viewers.
In YouTube Live Control Room, the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate describe the incoming stream. YouTube Help explains that it automatically transcodes a live stream into different output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and network connections. What settings should I use for 720p?
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the following recommended bitrates for 720p. They are recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality, and YouTube may update its settings table.

The same YouTube guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and a maximum interval of 4 seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codec options and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings page before configuring a stream, since recommendations can change.
How do I configure and check the stream?
- Choose 720p output. In your encoder or streaming service, select 1280×720 for the outgoing stream. Control names and locations vary by encoder, so use its own documentation for the exact setting.
- Confirm that the source is scaled. Ensure the workflow scales the 1920×1080 video to 1280×720 rather than expecting the source file’s resolution to determine the broadcast output.
- Set codec, frame rate, and bitrate. Use the relevant 720p recommendation above for your codec and frame rate. Configure CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, without exceeding 4 seconds, in line with YouTube’s guidance.
- Check upload capacity and stream health. The outgoing bitrate must be sustainable on your upload connection. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; see its encoder guidance and live stream troubleshooting advice.
- Test the complete path. Start a test stream and inspect the preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the configuration. A test can help reveal scaling, bandwidth, or stability problems, but it does not prove that a 24/7 broadcast will stay live indefinitely.
Is 720p better than 1080p for a 24/7 stream?
It depends on the content, viewing size, and available upload bandwidth. A 720p stream contains fewer pixels than 1080p, so it may show less fine detail, but perceived quality also depends on encoding and what is on screen. Lowering the output resolution can make a feed more practical when bandwidth or stability is the priority; it is not automatically the best choice for every channel.

- Consider 720p if a lower outgoing bitrate is useful or your upload connection cannot reliably sustain a higher-resolution stream.
- Consider 1080p if preserving finer detail matters and your encoder and upload connection can handle its bitrate reliably.
- Evaluate codec and frame rate too. The appropriate bitrate depends on these settings, not resolution alone.
YouTube’s general stream-settings page includes advice to use the highest supported resolution and bitrate in its specific discussion of 360-degree video. That context should not be read as a universal rule requiring every live stream to use the highest possible resolution. See YouTube’s general stream settings.
Does 720p settle whether a stream can run 24/7?
No. The 720p setting confirms a supported ingest resolution, not the operational limits or restart behavior of an uninterrupted, around-the-clock broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive statement does not establish what happens to longer streams or whether a continuous stream can remain live indefinitely. Check the current YouTube live stream archiving guidance and do not infer a 24/7 operating guarantee from the 720p encoder settings.
