For one stationary screen playing a simple YouTube loop, a suitable used thin client may cost less than a paid cloud signage service—especially if you already own the device. But the answer depends on the model’s ability to play your actual video, its purchase and electricity costs, and whether you need the remote management and recovery features a cloud plan may include. A cloud signage fee pays for management, not necessarily for YouTube video delivery itself.
First, decide what “cloud service” means
A cloud signage content-management system (CMS) can let you publish or manage content remotely. That is a different job from simply opening a YouTube URL on a screen. If your comparison is a CMS subscription versus a locally controlled player, count the CMS features you would actually use—not just video playback.
A cloud-hosted rendering or streaming service would be a different comparison again. The examples and prices below concern signage services; they do not establish a general price for cloud-hosted playback.
Can a used thin client play the loop?
It can, if the exact hardware and software support the stream you plan to show and the device decodes it smoothly. Do not treat “thin client” as a compatibility guarantee. Test the target video, resolution, frame rate and browser or signage player on the actual device before relying on it.

Check browser, network and video requirements
YouTube Help advises viewers to use an up-to-date browser and operating system and a good internet connection. Its approximate sustained-speed guidance is 5 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are connection recommendations, not guarantees that a particular thin client can decode the chosen video. YouTube also notes that browser HD streaming is unavailable except in Safari for HD streaming; supported devices can stream HD. Confirm the actual browser and playback quality rather than assuming a small computer will handle every format.
Player requirements are specific to that player
For its own signage player, Framebaker documents support for refurbished Dell, HP and Lenovo thin clients meeting these requirements: Intel 8th generation or newer, 4 GB RAM and 16 GB storage. Those are Framebaker Player requirements, not universal YouTube minimums. Check the chosen player’s current compatibility list before buying hardware.
Check YouTube loop restrictions before deployment
A loop that works on your laptop may still fail in a signage setup because of video privacy, regional availability, network interruptions or the player’s own limits. Airtame’s documented YouTube signage workflow supports public or unlisted videos and playlists, offers a loop option, and requires at least 5 Mbps for 1080p in that setup. Airtame reports a maximum of 1080p at 60 frames per second depending on hardware. Its requirements apply to Airtame, not every signage player.

- Confirm supported resolution and frame rate in the player documentation, then test the stream on the target device.
- Make sure the content is yours to use and that its YouTube availability will not be interrupted by rights restrictions or a change in its privacy setting.
Thin client or cloud signage: compare the real costs and capabilities
The following are vendor examples, not market averages or interchangeable offers. ScreenCloud bills annually per screen; 1Play charges by active screen and purchase quantity and says it has no recurring subscription. Compare the actual plan and billing basis for your screen count and required features.
| Option | Published price | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Used thin client | No model-specific purchase price or operating-cost figure established | Local playback is possible if the exact device and software meet the requirements and play the target video smoothly. Add electricity, any replacement parts and software. |
| ScreenCloud Core | USD 20 per screen/month, billed annually | Vendor-published Core price. Compare its management features with what you need. |
| ScreenCloud Pro | USD 30 per screen/month, billed annually | Vendor-published Pro price. Enterprise is quoted through sales. |
| 1Play | EUR 0.19–0.13 per active screen/day, equivalent to EUR 5.70–3.90 per 30 days depending on purchase quantity | Vendor-published quantity-dependent pricing; 1Play says it has no recurring subscription. |
ScreenCloud prices are from its pricing page; 1Play prices and billing terms are from its pricing page. The currencies, billing structures and included features differ, so these figures are not a like-for-like winner test.
Calculate the thin client’s running cost
Measure the device’s power draw while it is playing the actual video; do not substitute a generic wattage. Calculate monthly electricity as:

Estimate simple payback
Use this formula only when the cloud plan is genuinely being avoided:
Rank #4
- Premium Quad-Core Performance: Powered by the Intel Pentium Silver J5005 (up to 2.80 GHz Burst). This higher-tier processor offers superior speed and stability compared to standard Celeron models, suitable for demanding cloud workloads
- Upgraded 8GB DDR4 RAM: Equipped with 8GB of high-speed memory for smooth multitasking and responsive application performance. Well-suited for modern VDI environments, including Citrix, VMware, and Microsoft Azure
- Triple Display Support: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 605 and triple DisplayPorts let you drive up to three monitors at 60Hz. Maximize your productivity with crisp, high-resolution screen real estate
- Enterprise-Grade Security: Equipped with an industry-standard Kensington-style K-Slot lock slot
- Reliable Wired Connectivity: Features a built-in Gigabit Ethernet port for the most stable and secure network connection possible. Note: This unit is a dedicated wired model and does not include internal Wi-Fi or Bluetooth hardware
Net upfront device cost ÷ (monthly cloud bill avoided − monthly electricity and software costs)
If the monthly saving is zero or negative, there is no cost payback under those assumptions. A numeric payback cannot be established without the particular device price, measured playback power, local electricity tariff, operating hours and actual plan bill.
What you trade away by choosing local playback
A local thin-client loop can avoid a per-screen CMS bill, but it also leaves setup and maintenance with you. Decide whether one screen that can be checked in person is enough, or whether centralized publishing, monitoring and recovery are worth paying for.

Managed players can add resilience beyond a basic browser loop. For example, Vojo’s player specification describes locally cached content that continues playing through a network drop, recovery after freezes and restart after power loss. Those are claims about Vojo’s described player and platform; they do not establish that an arbitrary refurbished thin client or ordinary browser loop will behave the same way.
Also distinguish internet use from local caching: YouTube playback in the cited browser and signage examples uses an internet connection. SmartSign2Go warns that third-party YouTube or Vimeo content in its setup may be loaded anew at least once a day; that is vendor-specific and should not be assumed for other players.

- Choose a thin client when: you have one stationary display, can verify the exact device and player, are comfortable maintaining it, and do not need centralized publishing or managed recovery.
- Choose a cloud CMS when: remote scheduling, multi-screen publishing, fleet management or documented recovery features justify its fee.
- Before purchasing used hardware: check the seller’s condition and return terms, verify operating-system and player support, and test the target stream at the intended resolution and frame rate for an extended period.
- Before settling on either option: confirm the video’s visibility and regional availability, measure network performance where the screen will sit, and compare costs using your own power and tariff figures.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your underlying goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube video live around the clock rather than managing signage screens, StreamNeo is a different kind of service: it runs an uploaded video or playlist as a YouTube live stream from the cloud.
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
There is one flat price per slot for the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB storage pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. You can choose short or long billing, cancel any time, and use UPI or cards in India; card checkout is available worldwide. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
