Yes. A counterfeit or modified hardware wallet can steal cryptocurrency if it records your recovery phrase, extracts or uses private keys, or changes what you approve on the device. Hardware wallets are designed to keep keys inside a protected chip, but that protection does not prove that every component, cable, screen, or setup step in the supply chain was untouched.
The safest approach is layered: buy through the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, inspect the package without treating a seal as proof, run the manufacturer’s genuine-device check in its official application, verify every transaction on the wallet’s own screen, and stop using any unit with unexplained damage or provenance. If a recovery phrase may have been exposed, create a new wallet on a trusted device and move the funds; do not continue using the possibly compromised phrase.
What a tampered hardware wallet can do
A hardware wallet normally generates and stores private keys inside the device. The wallet application on your computer or phone asks the device to sign a transaction, while the secret key remains inside. Tampering attacks try to break that separation or trick you before the protected chip can help.

Capture the recovery phrase during setup
The recovery phrase is the decisive secret. Anyone who records it can recreate the wallet on another device and spend the assets without possessing your original hardware. A malicious wallet might display a phrase that an attacker already knows, ask you to type an existing phrase into a fake setup screen, or add a hidden recording circuit around the legitimate electronics. Never enter an existing phrase into a device bought from an unknown seller or one with unexplained damage.

Observe or alter transaction approvals
An implant does not necessarily need to extract the secure element. It could monitor the screen, buttons, USB or other communication buses, or interfere with the setup process. If the device shows one destination while signing another, the user may approve a theft while believing the transaction is correct. Always compare the destination address and amount on the hardware wallet’s own display, not only in the companion application.
Use a counterfeit or pre-initialized wallet
A fake product can look genuine while containing a different circuit board, a cloned label, or a recovery phrase selected by the attacker. The attacker waits for you to fund the wallet and then uses the known phrase. A genuine-looking box, serial number, or startup animation cannot by itself establish that the device was safe before you received it.
How tamper detection works
Manufacturers combine physical evidence, cryptographic identity and hardware defenses. Each layer answers a different question, and none proves an untouched logistics chain on its own.

Physical tamper evidence
Trezor describes protective stickers and holographic seals over connectors and advises checking that package contents are complete. These controls can reveal an obvious opening or replacement. They are evidence of handling, not a cryptographic guarantee. Ledger Donjon explicitly warns that classic anti-tampering or holographic seals can create a false sense of security: they are easy to clone, and a package can sometimes be opened and closed without visibly damaging the seal.
A clean seal therefore does not prove that nobody opened the box, and a damaged seal does not identify what happened. Treat the seal as one input to a decision, alongside the seller, package contents, device behavior and official authenticity result.
Cryptographic authenticity checks
Ledger devices use a device key pair and an issuer certificate. The Ledger Wallet application challenges the device, checks that certificate and establishes a secure channel. This process is much stronger than comparing a printed serial number because the device must prove possession of a manufacturer-linked cryptographic identity.

Trezor devices receive a unique manufacturing certificate stored in the secure element. Trezor Safe 7 coordinates checks across two secure elements and a hardened microcontroller; support for ML-DSA-44 was added in 2026. These certificates and checks help establish that the protected components and approved firmware path belong to the manufacturer.
Cryptographic attestation is still narrower than a supply-chain investigation. Ledger’s threat model states that Genuine Check confirms the secure element but cannot verify the device’s physical supply-chain history. An attacker could leave the original secure element intact while adding an implant that watches a screen, bus or setup procedure. A successful genuine check is therefore necessary evidence, not a complete forensic guarantee.
Secure-element resistance
Secure elements are specialized chips designed to resist attempts to read or manipulate secrets. Ledger describes light detectors for laser fault injection, temperature sensors and voltage-glitch detectors. These mechanisms can detect conditions used to induce calculation errors or bypass checks.

Trezor describes secure elements enforcing PIN protection, assisting genuine-device checks and supplying independent randomness. Trezor Safe 7 uses two secure elements and says that ten incorrect PIN entries erase the wallet. If one secure element fails or is tampered with, the other can enforce limits. These controls reduce the value of physical attacks; they do not make an attached peripheral, altered display or compromised setup process impossible.
What each protection layer proves—and what it misses
| Protection layer | What it can establish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Package stickers and holograms | Provides visible evidence that a package or connector may have been opened. | Seals can be cloned, and packages may be opened and closed without obvious damage. |
| Manufacturer certificate or attestation | Confirms a device identity, approved component and recognized firmware path through the official application. | Does not establish every event in shipping, storage or resale, and may not detect an added implant that leaves the secure element unchanged. |
| Secure element | Protects keys, enforces PIN checks, generates or assists with independent randomness and can detect some fault-injection conditions. | It cannot by itself vouch for an attached screen, bus, cable, button board or malicious setup procedure. |
| On-device transaction display | Lets you verify the destination and amount at the point of signing. | It helps only when the display itself is trusted and you actually compare it before approving. |
How to check a new wallet before funding it
- Confirm provenance. Buy from the manufacturer’s official store or an authorized reseller. Keep the invoice, seller name and order details. An unauthorized seller may have had access to the unit before you.
- Document the package. Photograph the box, seals, serial information and all contents before opening. Missing accessories, mismatched labels, rewrapped plastic or unexplained marks justify stopping rather than improvising a setup.
- Inspect, but do not over-trust, seals. Look for lifted stickers, cut tape, residue, scratches around connectors and signs that packaging was resealed. A perfect seal is not a substitute for the remaining checks.
- Install the official wallet application. Obtain it through the manufacturer’s documented distribution channel. Do not use an application supplied by the seller or a link printed on an unexpected insert.
- Run the official genuine-device check before adding funds. Let the application challenge the device and validate its certificate or attestation. If the check fails, shows an unexpected warning or cannot complete, disconnect the device and contact the manufacturer’s support channel with your photographs and purchase record.
- Initialize the wallet yourself. Generate a new recovery phrase on the device. No person, website, card or pre-printed sheet should provide the phrase. If the device asks you to type an old phrase during ordinary first-time setup, stop and investigate.
- Record the phrase offline. Write it down exactly and store it where cameras, cloud backups and other people cannot access it. Never photograph it, paste it into a computer or send it to support.
- Verify a small test transaction. Before moving a significant balance, send a small amount and compare the complete destination address and amount on the hardware wallet’s screen. Confirm receipt independently, then use the same screen check for every later transaction.
What to do if the box seal is broken
A broken or suspicious seal is a stop signal, not proof of theft. Do not initialize the wallet, enter a recovery phrase or connect it to a funded account while the history is unexplained.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Keep the device and packaging together and photograph the condition, serial information and purchase record.
- Ask the manufacturer whether the observed packaging and device condition is expected for that model and region. Use the official support channel, not contact details supplied by an unknown seller.
- If the seller is unauthorized or cannot explain the damage, request a return or replacement through the applicable marketplace or payment provider.
- Only proceed after the manufacturer’s official application completes its genuine-device check and support has given a documented resolution.
If the package was opened by customs, a retailer or a repair service, that fact may explain the seal without proving the device is safe. The same cryptographic and setup checks still apply.

What to do if you already used a suspicious wallet
If you entered an existing recovery phrase
Assume that phrase is exposed. On a trusted, verified device, create a completely new wallet and transfer every asset from the old addresses to the new ones. Do not restore the old phrase on the replacement device, and do not keep funds in the old wallet while waiting for an investigation. A phrase cannot be “changed”; moving to a new phrase is the remedy.
If you funded the wallet but never typed a phrase
Stop using the device and leave it offline. Contact the manufacturer with the purchase and device evidence. If you observe an unapproved transaction, an address that changes between the computer and the device screen, repeated genuine-check failures or unexplained firmware behavior, move funds from a trusted environment as soon as you can do so safely. Preserve logs, screenshots and transaction identifiers for support or an exchange’s security team.
If you approved a transaction to the wrong address
Blockchain transfers are generally irreversible. Contact the recipient, exchange or service immediately if the destination is identifiable, but do not give anyone your recovery phrase or PIN while seeking help. A support agent does not need either secret to verify a transaction.
How to compare hardware-wallet tamper defenses
Do not rank a device by its sticker alone. Use the following criteria when evaluating a model such as a Ledger Nano X, Trezor Safe 3 or Trezor Safe 7:
| Evaluation question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the seller official or authorized? | It reduces the number of unknown people who could have handled or replaced the device. |
| What secure-element architecture is documented? | Multiple secure elements or a hardened controller can provide independent checks and limits, but only when the manufacturer explains their roles. |
| How does the certificate or attestation check work? | A challenge-and-certificate process is harder to fake than a printed identifier. |
| What happens after incorrect PIN attempts? | PIN retry limits and wipe behavior reduce the usefulness of guessing or repeated physical access. |
| Are threat models and independent audits published? | Clear documentation lets you see what the maker claims to detect and what remains outside its guarantee. |
| Can you verify transactions on the device screen? | Screen-based confirmation helps detect a malicious computer or altered software before signing. |
| Is the replacement and recovery process clear? | You need a safe path to replace a suspect device without exposing the recovery phrase. |
| Are limitations stated plainly? | A manufacturer that distinguishes component authenticity from supply-chain history gives you a more realistic risk model. |
Everyday practices that close the remaining gaps
- Keep the hardware wallet in your possession and store it where unauthorized people cannot handle it.
- Use a unique PIN and never disclose it. Do not leave the device unlocked while unattended.
- Install firmware only through the official wallet application and read any warning before accepting an update.
- Check the wallet’s display for the full destination and amount whenever you sign; do not approve based solely on a computer or phone screen.
- Separate the recovery phrase from the device. Someone who steals the device should not also obtain the phrase.
- Use a second, independently verified device or account for high-value transfers when your threat model justifies the extra work.
- Periodically confirm that the wallet application still recognizes the device as genuine, especially after a repair, resale, long storage period or unexpected firmware event.
The practical answer to “Can someone tamper with my Ledger or Trezor?”
Yes, in principle: a legitimate secure element can coexist with a malicious implant or a compromised setup process. The manufacturer’s genuine check, certificates, secure elements, PIN controls and fault sensors make many attacks harder, but they do not prove that the entire physical supply chain was untouched. The strongest protection is to control provenance, verify authenticity in official software, generate the phrase yourself, confirm transactions on the device display and treat any possible phrase exposure as a reason to migrate immediately.
