Yes—if by “dedicated hardware” you mean a separate button pad for controlling a stream. WebDeck can turn a compatible phone or tablet into a browser-based control surface, but a host computer still has to run WebDeck and your streaming software. The approach is not a replacement for the computer, camera, capture gear, or broadcast application.
How WebDeck replaces a physical control pad
The WebDeck project describes its software as a Flask application for controlling a computer from a browser-equipped touchscreen. In its documented workflow, you run WebDeck on the host computer, then scan a QR code to open the control page on a phone or tablet. The mobile device supplies the touch interface; it does not replace the computer running the stream.
- Download and run the Windows portable archive on the computer you want to control, as documented in the WebDeck project README.
- Use the QR code available from WebDeck’s system-tray icon to open its control page in the phone or tablet’s browser.
- Check the project’s linked device and browser compatibility table before relying on a particular mobile device.
The setup described by the project requires no mobile app installation. The available documentation describes access over the local network; it does not establish WebDeck as a cloud service.
What “dedicated hardware” means—and what it does not
A browser-based deck may make a separate stream-control button panel unnecessary. It does not eliminate the host computer or the software that operates the broadcast. You still need your normal streaming setup, including OBS Studio if that is the application you use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
WebDeck’s current README states that the host runs on Windows. Do not assume a Mac or Linux host is supported: Hackaday’s February 25, 2024 report mentioned those platforms as hoped-for future work, not as shipped support. Check the README and compatibility information for current details before setting up. Hackaday also reported integrations with VLC, OBS Studio, and Spotify; the README does not enumerate those integrations in the reviewed description, so confirm that the control you need is currently supported.
How the main control options differ
OBS users can choose among touchscreen controls, keyboard shortcuts, companion software, and a physical control pad. The distinctions that matter are host and device compatibility, how directly an option integrates with OBS, setup effort, and whether you want physical buttons. A commercial 2026 comparison identifies these categories, but it is vendor-authored and is best treated as an option inventory rather than neutral evidence for product rankings or prices.

| Approach | What it provides | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WebDeck on a phone or tablet | A touchscreen control page opened in a browser; the host runs WebDeck. The project README currently states Windows host support. | Check browser/device compatibility and the current integration list. Touchscreen controls do not provide physical button feel. |
| OBS hotkeys | Keyboard shortcuts for assigned actions. | Useful if you already work at the keyboard, but shortcut-based control may not provide the same depth as a dedicated integration. |
| Phone-control or companion software | Software alternatives can provide a phone/tablet interface or connect control tools to OBS. | Features, host support, setup, and integration depth vary by product; confirm them in current documentation. |
| Physical control pad | A separate panel with tactile keys. For example, Streamplify lists its STREAMING DECK ONE as a 15-key LCD pad with USB-C 3.0, two USB-A hub ports, Windows 10+ and Mac OS compatibility, and OBS and vMix plugin support. | It retains the tactile controls a touchscreen cannot reproduce, but it is an additional piece of hardware. |
When a phone or tablet is the better fit
- You already own a touchscreen device and want to avoid buying a separate control pad.
- Your host computer and the specific phone/browser combination are supported.
- The controls and integrations available in the software cover the actions you need during a stream.
- You are comfortable operating on a touchscreen rather than feeling distinct physical keys.
A tablet stand can position an existing device beside your keyboard; it is an ergonomic accessory, not a technical requirement. VortiDeck’s setup guidance offers this placement as an option.
When to keep or buy a physical deck
- You want tactile buttons that are easy to locate by feel while watching the stream.
- You need a specific hardware or plugin integration and have confirmed that the pad supports it.
- You prefer a separate control surface over a browser page or keyboard shortcuts.
For example, Streamplify documents the STREAMING DECK ONE as a standalone 15-key LCD control pad with USB hub ports and listed Windows, Mac OS, OBS, and vMix support. That makes it a representative hardware alternative, not a requirement for streaming.

How to decide
Try a browser-based deck if its host support, device compatibility, and current integrations match your setup. Choose a physical pad if tactile operation or a particular hardware integration matters more than avoiding a separate device. WebDeck’s README describes it as a free alternative, but the available sources do not establish comparative user savings, adoption figures, or performance results.
