Yes—a Raspberry Pi can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but that proves it can stream, not that a particular setup will run unattended without interruption. For reliable operation, the Pi must sustain the chosen encode, upload, power and temperature conditions; the stream also needs monitoring and tested recovery procedures. No cited source establishes a Raspberry Pi model’s 24/7 uptime.

What “reliably” means for a Pi stream

A Raspberry Pi forum example describes sending a video file to YouTube over RTMP with FFmpeg, but it does not report a verified 24/7 endurance test or establish capacity for a specific Pi model. An open-source Raspberry Pi-oriented project documents an FFmpeg and systemd recovery design, including responses to encoder crashes, network interruptions and reboots; that design is an implementation pattern, not independent evidence that an ordinary setup recovers correctly without configuration and testing.

Reliability therefore depends on the whole deployment: the Pi’s ability to decode and encode the chosen material, sustained network upload, stable power and temperature, source-file availability, process supervision, and how YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle is handled after an interruption. There is no supported basis here for a reliability percentage or a claim that one Pi model will run continuously for months.

Choose an ingest profile YouTube supports

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, where supported. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Example H.264 profile YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not guarantees that a Pi can encode the profile or that your connection can carry it continuously. YouTube advises speed-testing upload capacity and choosing a bitrate with adequate sustained headroom beyond the encoded stream rate. Start with a moderate resolution and frame rate the Pi can sustain, then test representative movement and audio over the actual connection. Its guidance recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the stream.

Prepare YouTube and the Pi

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements and setup in YouTube’s live streaming help.
  2. Create the broadcast and obtain its ingest details. Add the YouTube server URL and stream key to your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or share screenshots that expose it. Prefer RTMPS when the selected encoder workflow supports it.
  3. Check the source and encoding path. If the prerecorded file is already compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, stream-copying its audio and video may avoid unnecessary encoding work where the software workflow permits. If you transcode, verify codec, bitrate, constant-bitrate behavior and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. A copy option documented by a Pi project is not proof that every source file is compatible.
  4. Test the exact setup before relying on it. Use the intended file, audio, resolution, frame rate, Pi, power supply and network. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages, and check the Pi’s temperature and network behavior. The cited sources specify no universal test duration; a short successful preview cannot prove long-term uptime.
  5. Arrange startup and recovery. Use process supervision and configure startup after reboot if unattended operation is required. Test what actually happens after stopping FFmpeg, dropping the network, and rebooting. Restarting the encoder does not necessarily resolve every YouTube broadcast or event-state issue, so verify the stream returns to a healthy state in YouTube.
  6. Monitor during operation. Have a way to detect a failed stream and confirm recovery. The cited guidance supports monitoring stream health; it does not establish that any particular monitoring or restart setup will catch every interruption.

Common failure points and what to check

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or drops frames: Check whether upload capacity is consistently adequate for the selected stream bitrate, including headroom. Reduce the profile if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • The Pi struggles with encoding: Lower resolution or frame rate, or use a compatible stream-copy workflow if the source and encoder support it. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not establish what a particular Pi can encode.
  • The stream does not return after an encoder restart: Check both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s broadcast state. Test recovery behavior rather than assuming an FFmpeg restart alone restores the event.
  • The setup stops after power loss or reboot: Check power stability and startup supervision, then test an actual reboot. A project describing systemd recovery is not a guarantee for a differently configured Pi.
  • Operation degrades over time: Check temperature, power, network behavior and source-file availability under the real operating conditions. The cited material does not establish a particular cooling setup, storage life or temperature threshold for 24/7 use.

Pi, another local encoder, or cloud playback?

Approach What it changes Main trade-off
Raspberry Pi Runs the encoder locally and offers local control. You maintain the device, power, network, software supervision and recovery behavior; model-specific continuous capacity is not established.
More capable local computer or hardware encoder Moves the workload to other local equipment. The device still needs reliable local power and connectivity; the available evidence gives no comparative performance or cost figures.
StreamNeo Runs prerecorded YouTube playback from the cloud, so no home computer needs to stay on; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps uses one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Playback and ingest depend on a cloud provider rather than a device you maintain locally.

YouTube’s encoder directory also lists cloud-service options, including Gyre for prerecorded 24/7 video and Upstream.so for continuous live streams. Check their current plans, limits and availability directly; no pricing or comparative reliability figures are established here. See YouTube’s encoder directory.
