Yes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can send prerecorded videos to YouTube Live, but that does not guarantee a reliable, unattended 24/7 stream. Raspberry Pi documents a software-encoding example for the Pi 5, while YouTube supports encoder-based broadcasts. Your results depend on the files, encoding settings, power, cooling, network and recovery plan; no documented benchmark establishes uninterrupted operation for a particular Pi 5 setup.

There is also an important replay limitation: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete archive, plan local recording or shorter broadcasts rather than relying on one continuous 24-hour stream.

What a Pi 5 can—and cannot—promise

The Pi 5 can serve as the computer that reads local video files, encodes the output and sends it to YouTube Live. Raspberry Pi’s streaming guide includes a software-encoding path using x264enc, demonstrating that such a workflow is documented. It does not establish that every playlist, resolution or frame rate will run reliably on every Pi 5.

For a continuous channel, the Pi, its storage, power supply and network connection all remain part of the streaming chain. You are responsible for keeping them available, detecting failures and restoring the stream. Treat 24/7 operation as a goal to validate on your own hardware, not an assurance supplied by the example.

Check YouTube readiness and replay needs first

Enable live streaming and verify the channel

YouTube Live must be enabled for the channel; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube also says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Confirm those conditions before preparing an unattended setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Plan around the 12-hour archive limit

YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour broadcast is therefore not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. If an archive matters, arrange a local recording or schedule shorter segments, then verify that the resulting files are usable. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; see Archive live streams.

Prepare the Pi and video files

Hardware and placement

  • Use a Raspberry Pi 5 with boot storage and a network connection. For Pi 5 power, Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C supply; consult its getting-started documentation.
  • Keep the playlist files accessible on the Pi or storage it can reliably read. Confirm that the chosen software can read each file and move from one item to the next.
  • Consider cooling and a stable wired network for sustained use. These are prudent design choices, not proof of a particular required cooler, temperature target or uptime.
  • Place the device and network equipment where they are less likely to be unplugged or interrupted. A headless setup still needs dependable power, boot media and connectivity.

Check the media before going live

Test the exact files you intend to loop. Confirm that video and audio play, that transitions between playlist items behave as expected, and that the encoder can process them at your intended output settings. The cited Pi example does not establish a universal resolution, frame rate or bitrate for all playlists, so do not assume a profile will work without testing.

Configure a cautious encoder workflow

  1. Prepare the channel stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key through YouTube’s encoder workflow.
  2. Configure your playback and encoding software. Point it to the local playlist, enable looping or sequential playback, and configure the encoder to send to YouTube’s stream URL. Raspberry Pi’s documented Pi 5 example uses software encoding: it replaces v4l2h264enc extra-controls="controls,repeat_sequence_header=1" with x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1. This is an example configuration, not a guarantee for every output profile or media file. See the Raspberry Pi streaming guide.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the encoder configuration or a protected secret store. Do not publish it in a screenshot, public configuration file or example. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
  4. Run an unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room for incoming video, and monitor picture, sound and playlist transitions on another device. YouTube advises testing the encoder and verifying local archive files before relying on a stream; see YouTube’s live streaming tips.
  5. Add recovery and monitoring before unattended use. Configure the playback/encoder process to start at boot and restart if it exits. Arrange remote checks so you can tell whether the Pi is online and whether YouTube is receiving a signal. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees from Raspberry Pi or YouTube. Test a deliberate process restart and a network interruption while the stream is unlisted, and confirm how the encoder and YouTube respond.

Protect your channel from rights and monetization problems

Streaming does not grant content rights

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to stream and archive the material, including applicable music rights. YouTube’s livestream terms place that responsibility on the creator. A playlist made from files you can play locally is not automatically cleared for a public broadcast.

Repetition and monetization are separate questions

Technical ability to loop a playlist does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification describes repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content and evaluates reused content at the channel level. A repeated playlist does not by itself prove that a channel meets monetization policies; rights and the channel’s original value matter. This was a policy clarification, not a blanket ban on prerecorded livestreams. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Possible cause What to check
YouTube receives no video Live streaming is not enabled, the encoder is not running, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. Confirm channel eligibility and activation, check the encoder’s destination settings, and inspect the Live Control Room. Keep the key private while correcting it.
The stream starts but drops Power, network or encoder-process interruptions can break the path between the Pi and YouTube. Check power and network stability, review process logs, and test automatic restart and remote monitoring. Do not treat a restart policy as a substitute for detecting whether the stream recovered.
Video or audio fails during the playlist A particular file or transition may not work with the selected playback and encoding configuration. Test each file and playlist transition, then repeat the unlisted test using the exact media and output settings planned for live use.
A long stream has no complete replay YouTube may not capture a broadcast exceeding 12 hours. Use local recording or plan shorter segments if preserving a replay is important, and verify the saved files.
