Yes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can play YouTube continuously if the stream is within the browser’s decoding capability and the connection remains stable. Start at 720p or 1080p, preferably over Ethernet, and test the exact stream for the length of time you intend to leave it running. This is a practical possibility, not a guarantee of uninterrupted all-day playback: there is no cited duration-tested Pi 5 browser benchmark or India-wide ISP reliability figure for this setup.
What “continuous YouTube stream” means
The answer depends partly on what you mean by continuous. Playing one long YouTube video on the Pi is different from leaving a playlist to advance automatically, and both are different from broadcasting a 24/7 channel to YouTube. The Pi setup below is for playing YouTube in a browser. Official setup and troubleshooting guidance does not certify a kiosk configuration, automatic playlist continuation, or a particular 24/7 playback arrangement.
If your goal is instead to keep your own YouTube channel live using pre-recorded videos, see StreamNeo below: it uploads and loops videos to YouTube from the cloud, rather than playing YouTube on a Pi.
What the Raspberry Pi 5 can handle
The Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, a VideoCore VII GPU, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Gigabit Ethernet. Raspberry Pi’s specifications list 5V/5A USB-C power; using 5V/3A limits current available to peripherals, so use an appropriate supply and avoid treating an underpowered setup as a reliable unattended player.

Resolution and codec both matter
Raspberry Pi identifies hardware decoding for 4Kp60 HEVC; other codecs run in software. Do not assume every YouTube 4K stream will use the Pi’s HEVC hardware decoder. Raspberry Pi processor documentation estimates H.264 decoding at roughly 10–20% CPU for 1080p24 and 50–60% for 1080p60. These are decode estimates, not benchmarks of YouTube in a particular browser, and actual browser performance can vary with the stream and software.
For a low-friction first test, use Raspberry Pi OS with its system and browser updated, close unnecessary tabs, and begin at 720p or 1080p. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance identifies Chromium and Firefox as browser choices. If video stutters, lower the playback quality and compare: the cause may be network conditions, browser load, or decoding work.

How much Indian broadband speed does playback need?
YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds per stream are a useful starting point, not a guarantee and not a statement about Indian broadband plans. The connection must sustain playback at the Pi’s location; an advertised maximum speed alone does not show whether it will do so.
| YouTube playback quality | Approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 20 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube recommendations current when accessed on 2026-10-03. They describe sustained speed for playback, not a suitable total household plan speed. Leave headroom for other people and devices using the connection. A speed test at the Pi’s actual location, followed by playback at the intended quality, is more informative than the plan’s headline speed.

Why a fast plan may still buffer
Router placement, Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, ISP congestion, region, and time of day can all affect the connection reaching the Pi. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can affect live programming. If Wi-Fi is variable, test with Gigabit Ethernet; otherwise put the Pi in reliable coverage and reduce obstructions or nearby interference.
Set up and test the Pi 5
- Prepare the system. Install current Raspberry Pi OS on boot media, complete the desktop setup, and update the operating system and browser. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation covers boot media, power, and peripherals; Chromium and Firefox are documented browser options.
- Connect the network. Use Gigabit Ethernet if available. If using Wi-Fi, place the Pi where signal is reliable and avoid obstructions and sources of interference.
- Run a 720p trial. Open the intended YouTube video or channel and select 720p. Observe buffering, dropped frames, browser instability, heat, and any power interruptions over a meaningful trial period.
- Try 1080p, then higher quality only if stable. Compare results with YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed guidance: 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD.
- Test the actual unattended duration. If you plan to leave it running all day or overnight, validate that exact stream and duration. A short successful playback test does not establish all-day reliability.
Troubleshooting buffering or unstable playback
- Buffering at one quality: Lower the quality and retry. If that helps, the connection may not sustain the original stream, or the Pi/browser may be struggling with its decode workload.
- Wi-Fi playback varies: Try Ethernet, reposition the Pi or router, reduce interference, and test again at the intended location.
- Playback degrades while other devices are active: Reduce competing household traffic or use a lower quality. Leave more headroom than the per-stream recommendation alone.
- Stuttering despite apparently adequate speed: Close tabs, update or restart the browser, and compare at a lower resolution. Speed is only one factor; codec, frame rate, browser load, and congestion can matter too.
- Unexpected stops in a playlist or live programme: Check whether the browser or YouTube playback has paused or ended, then test the playlist behavior separately. The cited guidance does not certify automatic continuation in a specific browser configuration.
- Interruption during an unattended run: Check network stability and power as well as playback settings. Do not assume the Pi will automatically recover from every browser, power, or connection failure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you mean broadcasting your own pre-recorded videos as a continuous YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different approach from leaving a Pi playing YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Continuous playback or cloud looping does not grant permission to use a video, music track, or other material. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and channel rules before running a long playlist or repeated programme. A technically stable stream is not by itself a guarantee that a channel or its content complies with YouTube’s policies.
