Yes, a Raspberry Pi 5 can plausibly encode a simple rain-sounds YouTube stream, especially with a static or low-motion visual. But the board’s specifications do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Power, cooling, internet stability, encoder settings, and recovery from outages all matter, so test the complete setup before relying on it.
What the Pi 5 setup can—and cannot—establish
YouTube supports encoder-based live broadcasts using H.264 video and AAC audio, and Raspberry Pi has published a technical paper about H.264 encoding performance on Pi 5-series computers. That makes the setup plausible, but does not establish a maximum resolution or frame rate for this use, or how long a specific Pi 5 installation will run without interruption.
A rain loop with a still or nearly still image is a modest production compared with a busy, multi-camera stream. That is a practical workload assessment, not a measured Pi 5 benchmark. Do not treat the Pi 5’s listed 4Kp60 HEVC decoder as proof that it can encode HEVC at that specification.
Recommended starting settings for YouTube
Begin with a conservative profile that follows YouTube’s current encoder guidance. You can adjust it later if the stream is stable and the image needs more detail.

| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video resolution and frame rate | 720p30 | A practical starting point for a low-motion rain visual; it is not a verified Pi 5 maximum or guarantee. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A compatible, straightforward encoder choice supported by YouTube. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps | YouTube lists this as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30 live ingestion. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio codec | AAC | YouTube accepts AAC or MP3; AAC is a suitable starting choice. |
| Ingest connection | RTMPS, if supported by your encoder | YouTube recommends the encrypted form of RTMP. |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not Pi-specific performance results. In particular, the 8 Mbps figure is not a promise that every Pi 5 encoder setup can sustain the chosen profile.
Prepare the Pi 5 for long operation
- Power: Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply. An under-powered supply can cause problems.
- Cooling: Raspberry Pi says the Pi 5 performs best with active cooling. Sustained encoding is a reason to use an appropriate active cooler or fan-equipped case and keep airflow unobstructed.
- Network: Use wired Ethernet when practical. Measure upload capacity during the hours the stream will run, not only during a convenient daytime test.
- Storage and playback: Keep the rain video and audio files available to the playback software, and test that the loop restarts cleanly rather than ending after one play.
Set up and test the YouTube live stream
- Check live access. Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the channel can create a live broadcast. First-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Create the broadcast. In Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and locate the server URL and stream key for the encoder workflow.
- Configure the Pi encoder. Load the rain video as a continuous loop, set H.264 video at 720p30 and 8 Mbps, choose CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and configure AAC audio. Use RTMPS when available.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, show it in a recording, or share it with anyone who does not need access. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- Preview before going public. Start the encoder and check Live Control Room’s preview for picture, sound, and stream health before beginning the broadcast.
- Run a long-duration test. Test the same Pi, power supply, cooling, network, files, and settings you intend to use. A successful launch alone does not show that the setup will recover from a later internet or power interruption.
- Monitor during operation. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the rain audio remains audible and the visual keeps looping. YouTube advises testing before a broadcast and monitoring it during the event.
Plan upload capacity and recovery
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For an 8 Mbps video bitrate, that means the connection needs capacity above the stream’s bitrate; allow additional room for other household or office traffic and any backup feed. The exact requirement depends on the configured video bitrate and whether a backup feed is used.

A network interruption can disrupt a live stream. Check the connection at the times the stream will run, and decide how you will notice a failure and restart the encoder or broadcast. The available specifications and platform guidance do not establish that a Pi 5 setup will automatically recover after every YouTube, power, software, or network failure. A 24/7 plan therefore needs testing and monitoring, not just a launch procedure.
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights to both the rain recording and the visual loop, including permission for public live streaming and any intended monetization. A recording that sounds like generic rain is not automatically free to use. Keep records of licenses or permissions and check the current YouTube rules that apply to your channel and content.

Whether a channel can monetize a repetitive or reused-content format depends on the channel’s eligibility and status, as well as the content and rights involved. There is no basis to promise monetization for a rain loop; review YouTube’s current policies and your channel’s status before building a plan around revenue.
Troubleshooting a Pi 5 rain stream
- YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm the channel’s live access is enabled, the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key, and the encoder is actually sending data. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Stream health reports connection problems: Measure upload capacity while the stream is running, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce the configured bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Prefer wired Ethernet if available.
- Picture stutters or the stream drops: Check power stability, cooling, encoder load, and network interruptions. Test a lower-complexity profile and observe it for an extended period; a brief successful test cannot prove continuous reliability.
- Audio is missing or ends: Verify that the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 audio, that the correct audio source is selected, and that the playback loop continues after the file ends.
- The stream stops and does not return: Check whether the encoder or playback process exited, whether the Pi lost power or network access, and whether the broadcast remains active in Live Control Room. Restart the relevant process and confirm the preview and stream health before relying on it again.
- The board becomes unstable during extended use: Use Raspberry Pi’s recommended high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply and improve active cooling and airflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a prerecorded rain video live, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating and monitoring a Pi at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera and streams to YouTube only.
