Yes, if the NAS can run compatible encoder software that loops a video and continuously sends it to YouTube Live. A NAS that can store or play a video is not necessarily capable of encoding and maintaining a YouTube livestream. Before relying on one, check the exact model, operating system, encoder support, processing capacity, upload connection and recovery behavior.

For a setup that does not depend on a computer or NAS staying powered at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It loops prerecorded videos to YouTube from the cloud. See StreamNeo.

What a NAS must do to keep a stream live

A NAS-based setup needs to perform three separate jobs: read the prerecorded file, encode it into a live video feed, and send that feed to YouTube continuously. The encoder must also support looping if you want the video to repeat, and ideally recover after a network interruption or process failure.

YouTube describes the encoder’s role this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The platform’s encoder setup guide provides the stream configuration workflow; it does not establish that every encoder listed can loop a file.

UGREEN NAS DH2300 2-Bay for Beginners & Personal Users, Phone Backup
  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

How to set up the NAS workflow

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel and check for any account restrictions. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Obtain the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder connection. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the channel.
  3. Verify the NAS encoder. Confirm that the application runs on your exact NAS model and OS, can access the media file, supports the intended codec and stream protocol, and has an explicit file-loop option. Check whether it reconnects after YouTube or the network drops the feed.
  4. Configure the output. Use YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS; supported codec and protocol combinations vary, so consult its live encoder settings rather than assuming every NAS app supports every format.
  5. Choose a sustainable profile. Set resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to values the NAS can encode and the internet connection can sustain. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommended ingest bitrates, not required internet-plan speeds. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate.
  6. Test the entire chain. Start a test stream and verify file playback, loop transitions, audio, stream health and the public watch page. Test what happens after a NAS reboot, encoder restart, temporary internet outage and loss of access to the media file. Monitor the setup before leaving it unattended.

Check NAS capability before committing

  • Encoding load: Real-time encoding uses CPU or supported hardware acceleration. The fact that a NAS can play a file locally does not prove it can encode that file in real time at the desired settings.
  • Software and model support: Check documentation for the specific NAS model, OS version and encoder release. Confirm source-file access, looping, startup after reboot and reconnection rather than relying on a generic claim that the NAS supports video.
  • Upload capacity: Measure sustained upload performance, not just the internet plan’s advertised download speed. A connectivity disruption can break a stream, as YouTube warns in its streaming tips.
  • Power and network: A UPS sized for the NAS and network equipment may help with brief power interruptions, but it cannot guarantee internet service or cover a prolonged outage.
  • Heat and unattended recovery: Check thermals during a long test and confirm that the encoder starts automatically and resumes the loop after a failure. These are system-specific checks; NAS capabilities vary.

Do not confuse camera broadcasting with file looping

Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature that sends selected camera feeds to YouTube using an RTMP path and key, with H.264 support. That is evidence of camera-to-YouTube broadcasting in that product context—not confirmation that the feature loops a prerecorded file. Local media playback, camera broadcasting and prerecorded-file encoding are different workflows. Verify the intended file-loop feature in the documentation for your NAS and software.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

YouTube Help says completed streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guarantee of one complete replay or unlimited rewind history. If you need an archive, plan and test a separate recording workflow. Check YouTube’s current DVR guidance and archive behavior before relying on them.
