Yes—conditionally. A jailbroken PlayStation 5 can run local large language model inference without an internet connection once the jailbreak payload, PS5LM application, and GGUF model files are already installed. PS5LM is an open-source, llama.cpp-based homebrew project that loads GGUF models on the console and exposes a local model server to devices on the same network. The documented payload workflow targets PS5 consoles on firmware 7.00 through 13.60 with a working jailbreak and payload loader.
What “offline” means on a PS5
Offline inference means the model executes on the console instead of sending prompts to a cloud service. After setup, PS5LM can answer prompts without a cloud account, subscription, or internet route. A laptop, phone, or coding tool can connect to the PS5 over the local network while the console hosts the model.
That does not mean every part of the process is internet-free. You may need another computer or a local network to deliver the jailbreak payload, install the application, and obtain GGUF files. The offline claim applies to inference after those files and the runtime are present on the console.

Prerequisites before you try it
- A PS5 you own with a supported firmware. The documented PS5LM payload path covers firmware versions 7.00–13.60. Other firmware versions are not established by the cited documentation.
- A working jailbreak and payload loader. PS5LM is homebrew software; an ordinary retail PS5 cannot simply install it through the standard PlayStation interface.
- The PS5LM application or payload files. The project provides the runtime that loads GGUF models and starts the local services.
- At least one GGUF model file. You can obtain a model through the PS5LM interface or copy a
.gguffile into/data/PS5LM/models. - Storage for the model. PS5LM documentation describes internal storage, USB storage, and the console’s compatible M.2 drive as possible locations.
- A local network for clients. The PS5 can serve a laptop, phone, or development tool over the network even when the console has no internet access.
Firmware support is a hard prerequisite, not a performance setting. A newer or older system software version may require a different exploit or may not work with the documented payload at all.
How PS5LM runs a model
PS5LM is based on llama.cpp and accepts models in GGUF format. In payload mode, the runtime loads the model into memory available to the homebrew process, performs inference on the console’s CPU path, and publishes local endpoints. The project documentation identifies port 8082 for the local model library and port 8081 for the chat API.
The README describes the intended use as a private model server at home: the PS5 loads a GGUF model and serves it to other devices, with no PC required while it is running, no cloud service, and no account. That statement is the project’s description rather than an independent benchmark or certification.
Because the server is local, the client device and PS5 must be able to reach each other on the same network. If the console is completely isolated from all networks, you can still use a local interface on the PS5, but a laptop or phone will not be able to call the API until a local connection exists.

Payload mode versus a native GPU build
The most important distinction is between the documented payload approach and the newer native-execution direction described by the project roadmap. Payload mode is the established workflow with a small practical model-memory budget. The roadmap identifies native llama.cpp execution on the PS5 GPU as the route to substantially larger models.
| Characteristic | Payload mode | Native GPU approach |
|---|---|---|
| Execution path | CPU-oriented payload runtime | Native llama.cpp execution on the PS5 GPU, as described in the roadmap |
| Usable model memory | About 1.6 GB can remain locked without starving the home screen, according to PS5LM documentation | A reported native run used up to about 11.4 GiB for model and context |
| Model size implication | Best suited to small, heavily quantized models | Potentially suitable for much larger GGUF models, subject to build and compatibility |
| Firmware evidence | Documented for 7.00–13.60 | No complete firmware-compatibility matrix is established in the available evidence |
| Setup complexity | Requires jailbreak, payload delivery, PS5LM files, and model installation | Requires the same general homebrew prerequisites plus a compatible native build |
| Stability evidence | Project workflow is documented, but no independent stability matrix is provided | Rapidly changing; reported demonstrations are not independent tests |
| Network serving | Local library on port 8082 and chat API on port 8081 | Network behavior depends on the specific native build |
The 1.6 GB figure is a practical payload-mode limit, not the total physical RAM capacity of the PS5. It describes how much model memory the payload can keep locked without starving the system’s home screen. Quantization, context size, and runtime overhead also affect whether a particular GGUF file fits.
How to load a GGUF model and start local inference
- Confirm the console version and jailbreak path. Check that the PS5 is on a firmware version covered by the documented payload workflow—7.00 through 13.60—and that your jailbreak and payload loader work before troubleshooting PS5LM.
- Deliver the payload and launch PS5LM. Use the payload loader required by your jailbreak setup, then start the PS5LM homebrew application. The exact delivery method is firmware-specific, so do not assume a payload intended for one exploit works on another.
- Put the model where PS5LM can see it. The documented location for copied files is
/data/PS5LM/models. The interface can also download models when the console has access to a network during setup. For a fully offline run, copy the GGUF file first, then disconnect the internet connection if desired. - Choose storage appropriate to the file size. Internal storage works for smaller libraries; a USB flash drive or USB SSD can simplify transfers; the PS5’s compatible M.2 drive is the clearest option for keeping a larger model collection on the console. Confirm that the drive is recognized and has enough free capacity before copying multi-gigabyte files.
- Open the local model library. PS5LM documents port 8082 for its library service. Use the interface to select the installed GGUF model and configure the available context or runtime options.
- Start the chat service. The documented chat API uses port 8081. From a device on the same local network, point your client or coding tool at the PS5’s local address and that port. Keep the PS5 awake and the payload active while requests are being processed.
- Test with a small prompt. Start with a short request and a small model. This separates network and installation problems from memory or performance limits before you attempt a larger file.
The model file itself must be in GGUF format. A model in another format will not become usable merely by renaming its extension; it needs to be converted or downloaded in a compatible GGUF build.
What performance can you expect?
PS5LM’s payload documentation lists the following approximate generation rates. They are project figures and can vary with the build, quantization, context length, prompt, thermal conditions, and other runtime settings.

- 2x faster than PCIe Gen 3 SSDs
- Designed with a heatsink to keep your rig cool for better performance and power efficiency
- Up to 40% less power consumption than DRAM cache-enabled PCIe Gen 4 SSDs

| Model | Reported payload-mode speed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3.5 0.8B | About 13–21 tokens per second | The smaller model is the faster documented example and is the safer starting point for payload mode |
| Qwen3.5 2B | About 9 tokens per second | Still within the documented payload examples, but slower and more demanding |
“Tokens per second” is generation speed, not answer quality and not total response time. The first token can take longer because the model must process the prompt, and a longer context consumes additional memory.
What about a 27B model?
A native fork has reportedly run Qwen3.8-27B at about 20 tokens per second. The same developer demonstrations reportedly showed Gemma 4 E4B at 61 tokens per second and Llama 3.2 3B at 124 tokens per second, with up to about 11.4 GiB used for model and context. These numbers were reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 16, 2026, citing developer demonstrations; they were not independently reproduced tests.
Therefore, the accurate answer is: a 27B-class model has been reported running on a native PS5 fork, but that result should not be treated as a guaranteed capability of the documented payload package. Build availability, firmware compatibility, quantization, context settings, and stability can change quickly.

Start with the model’s file size, but do not treat file size as the only requirement. Runtime buffers and the conversation context need memory too. A GGUF file that appears close to the payload’s approximately 1.6 GB usable budget may fail once those additional allocations are included.

- Use a small model first. The documented Qwen3.5 0.8B and 2B examples provide a realistic baseline for payload mode.
- Prefer a quantized GGUF variant. Quantization reduces storage and memory demand, usually with some quality trade-off.
- Keep context modest while testing. Increasing context length can consume enough memory to make an otherwise working model fail.
- Reserve space for multiple files only after one works. The model library can contain several GGUF files, but storage capacity does not remove the active-memory limit.
Storage choices and transfer workflow
| Location | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Internal PS5 storage | Keeping a small set of frequently used GGUF files on the console | Free capacity may be limited, especially if several large models are stored |
| USB flash drive | Simple file transfer from another computer | Capacity and sustained read performance vary by drive; the PS5 must recognize the device |
| USB SSD | Moving or retaining larger files with faster, more consistent storage than many flash drives | Still depends on PS5 USB compatibility and available capacity |
| Compatible M.2 drive | Maintaining a larger local model library inside the console | The drive must meet the PS5’s physical and compatibility requirements; storage does not increase payload-mode model memory |
For a mostly offline workflow, download or copy the GGUF files on another computer, transfer them to the chosen storage, and place them in /data/PS5LM/models if using the documented copied-file path. Once PS5LM detects the file, the inference request itself can stay on the local network.
Troubleshooting common failures
The payload does not load
First verify the firmware version and jailbreak chain. The documented range is 7.00–13.60; a mismatch between the exploit, payload loader, and system software can prevent PS5LM from starting. Recheck that the payload was delivered before launching the application.
The model is not listed
Confirm that the file ends in .gguf, is in /data/PS5LM/models, and completed copying without corruption. If the file was downloaded through the interface, allow the transfer to finish before refreshing the model library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe model loads, then exits or the home screen becomes unstable
This usually indicates that the active model and context exceed the practical payload budget. Try the smaller Qwen3.5 0.8B example, reduce context, or move to a native GPU build known to support larger allocations. The approximately 1.6 GB figure is specifically the amount the payload documentation says can remain locked without starving the home screen.

The API cannot be reached from a laptop or phone
Keep the client and PS5 on the same local network, use the PS5’s current local address, and check the documented ports: 8082 for the model library and 8081 for chat. A console with no network connection at all cannot serve requests to another device, even though it can still perform local inference.
Generation is much slower than the published figures
Project speeds are approximate. Check model size, quantization, prompt length, context length, and whether you are running payload mode or a different native build. The 13–21 tokens-per-second and 9-token-per-second figures are not guarantees for every GGUF variant.
What the PS5 can and cannot replace
A jailbroken PS5 can replace a small, always-on local inference box for experimentation, private prompts, and LAN-accessible development tools. It can keep prompts on your own equipment and continue answering when the internet is unavailable after setup.
It does not provide the broad, continuously updated knowledge, hosted uptime, or guaranteed compatibility of a cloud service. Model knowledge is fixed at the model’s training cutoff, and a homebrew runtime may require reinstallation or a different build when firmware, jailbreak, or model support changes.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each common question
- Can a jailbroken PS5 run an LLM offline? Yes, after the payload, PS5LM, and GGUF model are installed.
- Can it run ChatGPT locally without internet? It can run a local GGUF language model, not the hosted ChatGPT service itself.
- What firmware is needed? The documented PS5LM payload workflow covers 7.00–13.60 and requires a compatible jailbreak.
- Can it run a 27B model? A native fork has reported Qwen3.8-27B at about 20 tokens per second, but that is a developer result reported by Tom’s Hardware, not an independently verified guarantee for the standard payload.
- How are models loaded? Download them through the PS5LM interface or copy GGUF files into
/data/PS5LM/models, using internal, USB, or compatible M.2 storage.
